My dog doesn't understand present and past tense

If Mosura smells something that troubles her, such as the ring of moisture from a soda can a stranger drank four hours ago, she gets spooked and looks around for the scary person. She has literally run in terror from smells on the ground.

We have a bunch of people over to our house once a month and it takes her three to five days to act normal in the yard again. Even if she never saw or heard the people (crated in the house, visiting a friend during the event, etc) she sniffs stuff, gets scared, and panics. I think she only gets over it at all because the scents wear off.

Dogs depend more on smell than sight, so it makes sense that a certain smell can trigger this behavior. My two prey-driven dogs will get super excited while out on a walk when they pass a spot a cat, raccoon, or squirrel had been recently, even though there is no other animal anywhere in visual range. Same goes on hikes. Juneau will take off after a scent even when no animals are to be seen. Sometimes I wish I had the nose of a dog, to be able to smell all the stuff they do, but then again, living in urbania, that can't possibly smell too great.
