When did you nihon ken first blow their coat?

As title says, when did your pup first blow their coat?

Toki is shedding a lot more than usual, buuuuttt he is no where close to blowing his coat. My couches are suffering regardless, hehe
His sister Zuma has already blown her coat a few weeks ago, and being siblings, I figured they would blow their coats around the same time. I guess they would have been about 9.5-10months of age when Zuma shedded. Now they're 10.5 months.

Anyway, just wanted to see when everyone else's pups blew their coats for the first time. I'd love to hear horror stories! :)

  • Conker shed a lot when I first got him at 4 months old, but it stopped after I switched him to homemade food. He blew his coat at about 8 months. That was a typical coat-blow where it shed out in chunks for a while then stopped and regrew. This year, his undercoat has fallen out in segments with a short "rest" inbetween. It's really strange, but I think it's due to the odd temperatures we were having when he began to shed.
  • With all of my girls they blow their coat around the time they come into heat. Gojira's was around 7 months I think. Mosura at 10 months. Gryphon had already had her first heat and coat change when I got her at 8 months old. Now that Gryphon is spayed, she only seems to blow her coat in the summer, but it lasts all summer long. I expect Gojira will probably do the same thing next year.

Ghidora goes much longer between coat changes and I think has only actually blown his coat once at about 14 months. However, since he literally has no undercoat, his back legs just got a little wooly for a couple days and that was it.
  • Tachi already lost all hair. It really depends on each dogs and weather i think
  • Haha, I feel a little grateful that I haven't had to go through this yet ;)

How much do you think weather plays a role?
Toki is indoors about 95% of the time at this point, so he is in the air conditioning all the time. (it's like, 105+ every day). He has his morning and late evening walks, but that's really it, and the occasional 3 minute piss break in the backyard during the day.

Whereas Zuma is kenneled, though, she has access to AC the way her kennels set up.
  • Conker has always responded to temperature changes. When it get warm, he sheds, when it gets cold, he stops. The house isn't much cooler than the outside, and we often don't even run the AC, so that doesn't affect much. When we get wacky temperature swings, or travel to different regions, Conker will either start or stop shedding.
Juneau will shed more when it's hot, with big clumps coming out, but she sheds all-year. Sasha does too but it decreases slightly in the winter.
  • Sosuke waited a full year before he blew his coat for the first time, and it was much less dramatic than Rakka's shedding. When Rakka sheds, she SHEDS. During this last bout of shedding, I was actually brushing Sosuke to get the Rakka fur off him, lol.

Rakka was a year old when we got her, and she went into shed mode as soon as we brought her home. She had been living on the Northwest coast, in Washington, and the climate is much different here. It's very dry, with extreme temperatures on both ends and pretty erratic swings. She shed for two weeks, then stopped, then repeated again a month later. Then again... so the first year we had her, she shed about 6 times. Now she sheds only twice/year. I owe this to the fact that the climate is very stable over by the ocean, but here we get weather fronts from all directions in all temperatures, including chinook winds, which are warm, dry wind from the Rockies that will really warm things up, so there could be a raging blizzard and -50 one week and the next week it's warm enough for a t-shirt.
  • I heard indoor dog shed later than outdoor dogs in hot weather.
Toki is lucky that he can stay inside all the time.
but make sure floor is not slippery. he is growing and you will have joint problem if you keep him in slippery area.
