Not that I suspected anything different, but Joey just got a clean bill of health from the vet for his first checkup. He absolutely melted everyone there. They had to parade him around and show everyone. Poor guy was a little stressed though. I had taken him into the pet store on the way to the vet's office so I could buy him a harness and he was shaking out of fear. Then, at the vet's office, he wasn't quite that bad, but he was clearly uncomfortable. When they finished his exam, they put him on the table and he walked over to me and laid down against me and went to sleep. When we went to pay, I put him up on the counter so I could take my wallet out and he again curled up and went to sleep. They had to take pictures of all of this. Poor guy. Right now he is passed out on his side on the couch and Lucy is sniffing him curiously.

oh man, poor little dude... its hard being a puppy!

He is really cute little man... Jen melted when she saw the pic (me too, of course). He has some really nice color too - dark red... I like it.

What wonderful pictures!  A gorgeous family.  Almost makes want to get a playmate for Tenji.

Brad: I think he is going to lighten up a little bit color wise. He
was a bit darker when he was younger and his legs and around his eyes
are already lighter. Time will tell though.

    ----

Dorthy: You should get Tenji a playmate. He'll love it!

The vet is a stressful experience for a cat or dog, especially for a puppy or kitty...well, except for my kitties who are so pleased to be out of the crate, they shake their tails in happiness, LOL.

I'm sure didn't display your pity for him at the vet or after you left (but just in case you did, let me remind you)Smile.

Mika hates vet visits. Keigo doesn't mind as much, but he does pick up on Mika's uneasiness. Kurt and I actually love going to the vet. Dr. Kim is awesome and he's always fun to talk to.

I've got a little escape artist on my hands. After playing most of the morning, Lucy and Joey were both tired. Joey was napping on the couch so I enticed Lucy up there with a nylabone. At one point, Lucy moved away from it so Joey started chewing on it. Lucy was upset, but she curled up against me and looked longingly at Joey and the nylabone. Once Joey was finished, they wanted to play some more, but I wanted to get some work done I put Joey in his play pen and Lucy again curled up against me where she normally is. After a few minutes, Joey decided he didn't want to be in there any more so he started jumping up like he's been doing since yesterday. He's not strong enough yet to get much more than 8"-12" or so off the ground, but he just figured out that he can get his front legs over the top of the pen and use his rear legs on the cross wires. I just grabbed him while he was half way out of the pen and put him on the couch to nap with Lucy. Shit, I was really hoping I would get a few months out the play pen. Maybe I should take it back for the larger one? I wonder if Petsmart has a Bestbuy-like return policy.

that sux, Ahi did that too as a pup... that is how our current pen configurations were born... Ahi can't jump climb out of those.

I would just take it back and play dumb if they ask if it was open or used or anything.

I would return it, as long as you have the receipt and you intend to do an exchange, I think they will take it back for sure.  Just say you thought it was going to be taller, but its not so you need a taller one.  I dont' think they will give you ish for it.

I hope so, I'm going to take back either tomorrow or Saturday. Its been a week and a half so I don't think there will be a big problem time wise. Uggg. It was nice to be able to just step in and out of it without having to go to the door. Oh well. C'est la vie (sp?).

If I had known better, I would gotten a tall wire playpen from the start. We got a soft-sided pen (being a first-time dog owner and not knowing any better) and it took Ryu all of two minutes to figure out that he could peel away the velcro with his paws and push the fabric away from the bars... ugh... After work that day, I came home to find the playpen empty and Ryu sleeping on our bed Undecided

    Hehe. Pam, that's adorable!

Cute pictures. I'm so jealous that they sleep next to each other. Our two aren't into being cozy with each other. Re pens: We used a 4 ft X 4 ft Rover Enclosure with a hard floor and a top!

Yeah, it was my mistake. I bought the 2ft tall enclosure thinking I would only need it for a few months before he can run around the house without me having to keep an eye on him and Lucy playing together. I also thought it would be nice to be able to reach in and grab him without having to open the door. I underestimated the little bugger. I guess he gets a point for that one. Wink

What is it with the Shibas? Joey has started his counter and I bet Niko's counter is waay out of date, eheheh

I'm starting to fear the Shiba Power, they'll start in Altlanta and will take over the worldTongue out

As long as you know that your Shiba is going to constantly outsmart you, annoy you, and piss you off, then you can really start to love your Shiba.

Dave I think they sell some playpens that you can buy tops for, so the little guy can't get out.  But that does take away the ease of reaching in and pulling the dog out.

After three years with Nemo, I think our score is something like this:

    Nemo - 1,236

    Brandon - 30.

I'm hoping I can make a comeback when he gets really old and lazy.

I was staring off into space for a little while last night and when I realized what I was doing, it occurred to me that I was trying to devise a little overhand that I can build so he can't get his paws over the top. This way I'll still be able to climb in and reach in for him but he won't be able to climb out. Of course I don't know if it will work and I don't know if it will be any cheaper than just buying the bigger pen. I have some deciding to do.

    ----

He did finally mange to climb out today. I had my laptop on my lap and couldn't move it out of the way quickly enough to grab him before he fell flat on his face. I picked him up and put him back in the pen and he didn't try to get out again. I'm hoping he learned his lesson, but somehow I doubt it.

    ----

On a side note, I think Lucy is starting to realize that he isn't going to be leaving us any time soon. Yesterday she started refusing to take her normal spot next to me on the couch if Joey was also on the couch. It could partially be that he's rambunctious *ALL* the time and she just wanted to take a nap. I moved him into his pen and she almost immediately curled up against me and passed out. Poor girl. :-(

awwww poor Lucy Frown I think she is the sweetest Shiba I've ever read about - whenever I need a pick-me-up, I just think about her licking your head :P

oh... the couch rules have started. Maui and Kaia had this for a while - if Kaia got on the couch Maui would jump down, and Kaia would do that same if Maui got on it. They will eventually give in and both be on the couch.

Moto hopped on the couch earlier yesterday and started licking my friend Ted's neck and ear and I thought of you Dave.

Poor Lucy. But I'm so glad Joey is feeling comfortable. Poor Joey too!! Did he cry? Mika fell climbing the baby gate, she was crying and limping. It was so sad.

Brad: That's great to hear. I knew I was going to have to divide my affection/attention between the two of them, but I had no clue how difficult it was going to be. :-( In general, they won't be caught dead on the couch together. Luckily, once they are really tired, they'll both be on the couch.

    Sometimes they'll be far apart:

    Sometimes they'll be close:

And other times they'll be snuggling:

Jessica: Thanks for thinking of us! Lucy is a licking monster! When Rachael came over to meet Joey, Lucy had to make sure she got a good face cleaning in before Rach could show Joey any affection. Her cleaning of my face/bald spot has become a four or five time a day occurrence. On some level I feel like I should discourage it, but I hate to do it because she seems like she gets pure joy out of it. She is very good about it and will wait until I tell her "ok" and will stop when I say "enough" though. How did Ted react? Some people don't respond well to be assailed with Shiba kisses. :-)
