Bijo x Zuigan - Kaiju Kennels Litter A - 1yr Video

edited October 2013 in General
We found at least four puppies with the ultrasound. The last one was hiding behind the second one -- we almost missed it! -- and its possible another could be hiding somewhere. The vet figures they are 35 to 37 days along with a due date between October 28th and 30th. Their heartbeats are healthy and strong and all the pups seem to be around the same size and stage of development.

  • Halloween babies how exciting!
  • They're going to get some Halloween-themed nicknames!
  • Sweet! I am psyched for the pups! Akita pups are some of the cutest in the world.

I have a stupid question. If you breed a red and a red will the pups be all red?
  • Yea Halloween babies! It's so exciting with all these puppies,
  • edited October 2012
@okiron Depends. With such a breeding, none of the puppies will be brindle. Brindle and red are on the same locus and brindle is dominant over red. However, white is on a different locus. A red or brindle dog may be a carrier for white. A brindle dog may be a carrier for red. A white dog is always a carrier for red, brindle, or both. A red dog cannot carry brindle, but only one parent needs to have brindle to produce brindle puppies. Both parents must have red to have red puppies. Both parents must have white to have white puppies.

Given how the Japanese feel about breeding reds and whites together, I doubt either parent carries white - let alone both. So I only expect reds.
  • Ah thanks for that. I'm learning little by little :)
  • Congratulations!
  • Congratulations!
  • Thanks for posting the ultrasound pictures that's really neat, congratulations! Can't wait for the webcam
  • Very cool see the ultrasound, can't wait for the litter to be born. So many puppies lately, it's too much to handle lol
  • Itty bitty correction. Red and brindle are on different loci as well. All Akitas have red in the A loci. Then some Akitas have brindle or non-brindle on the K loci. And then some other Akitas have white on an unknown third loci.

It's comes out the same in Akitas, but in other breeds you could have a black/tan base plus brindle, leading to a black&tan with visible brindle on the tan points.

Thanks @ayk, I was just keeping it simple. :) But you are correct! I was referring to ky as "red" and ignoring the A locus.
  • congrats! Yay for puppies!
  • @ayk is the distance between ky and r loci far apart so that they sort independently or is there any linkage? So brindle is still dominant over red in that exp of brindle leads to complete dominance over red? Color genetics in dogs is very interesting
  • I am going to need a flow chart to understand any of this.
  • congrat!!!!
    Keep that coloring simple!
RedxRed= red or wht if both parents carries wht.
brindlexbrind= brindle or wht if both parents carries wht.
redxwht=red or wht if both parents carries wht.
brindxwht= brindle or wht if both parents carries wht.
redxbridle= most hard part. only bridle?? wht if both parents carries wht?

so redxred can't produce any brindle?
Very confusing but I'm almost getting it. need few more answers.

@ttddinh - So far the coat colors seem to be independent with no linkage. The actual gene names that were found are listed with the various DNA test labs like UC-Davis and Vetgen.

    http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/coatcolordog.php

I don't know offhand where those found genes are located, ie. what chromosome.

    @timkim - In theory....

red x red = red, white [both parents would have to carry white]

brindle x brindle = brindle, red, white. [both parents would have to carry non-brindle to get a red; both parents woud have to carry white to get a white]

redxwhite = red, white, brindle. [the white parent would have to carry a brindle]

brindle x white = brindle, white, red [both parents would need to carry non-brindle to get red]

red x brindle=red, brindle, white [both parents would have to carry white] Your neighbor's new white puppy is an example of this. :-)

Because the common strategy is to have brindle+white lines and then red lines, you've been seeing some skewed results. If there were more brindle+white+red lines, you'll be seeing more instances of all three colors in a litter.

Okay, here is a list of the possible phenotypes and genotypes:

    Red
    * Red only E/E ky/ky - Cannot have white puppies. May have red or brindle puppies if the other dog is a carrier.
    * Red carrying only white E/e ky/ky - May have white, red, or brindle puppies if the other dog is a carrier.

    White
    * White carrying only brindle e/e kbr/kbr - Cannot have red puppies. Will have brindle puppies by default. May have white puppies if the other dog is a carrier.
    * White carrying only red e/e ky/ky - May have white, red, or brindle puppies if the other dog is a carrier. Believed to have "dirty white" or "biscuit" colored fur. Avoided by Japanese breeders.
    * White carrying brindle and red e/e kbr/ky - May have white, red, or brindle puppies if the other dog is a carrier.

    Brindle
    * Brindle only E/E kbr/kbr - Cannot have white or red puppies. Will have brindle puppies by default.
    * Brindle carrying only white E/e kbr/kbr - Cannot have red puppies. Will have brindle puppies by default. May have white puppies if the other dog is a carrier.
    * Brindle carrying only red E/E kbr/ky - Cannot have white puppies. Will have brindle puppies by default. May have red puppies if the other dog is a carrier.
    * Brindle carrying white and red E/e kbr/ky - May have white, red, or brindle puppies if the other dog is a carrier. My ideal stud dog. Able to produce any color without having too much of one.

In general, white dogs are only bred to brindle dogs and red or brindle lines are kept separate from each other except when the breeder needs to improve pigment by bringing in another color. This means that white dogs usually carry at least one brindle gene and red dogs usually do not carry white unless they happen to come out of a red and brindle mating.

Here are all of the possible combinations:

Red x Red Can only have red or white puppies
    * Red only x red only = red
    * Red only x red carrying only white = red
    * Red carrying only white x red carrying only white = red or white

    Red x White
    * Red only x white carrying only brindle = brindle
    * Red only x white carrying only red = red
    * Red only x white carrying brindle and red = red or brindle
    * Red carrying only white x white carrying only brindle = white or brindle
    * Red carrying only white x white carrying only red = red or white
    * Red carrying only white x white carrying brindle and red = red, white, or brindle

    Red x Brindle
    * Red only x brindle only = brindle
    * Red only x brindle carrying only white = brindle
    * Red only x brindle carrying only red = red or brindle
    * Red only x brindle carrying white and red = red or brindle
    * Red carrying only white x brindle only = brindle
    * Red carrying only white x brindle carrying only white = white or brindle
    * Red carrying only white x brindle carrying only red = red or brindle
    * Red carrying only white x brindle carrying white and red = red, white, or brindle

White x White Can only have white puppies
    * White carrying only brindle x white carrying only brindle = white
    * White carrying only brindle x white carrying only red = white
    * White carrying only brindle x white carrying red and brindle = white
    * White carrying only red x white carrying only red = white
    * White carrying only red x white carrying red and brindle = white
    * White carrying red and brindle x white carrying red and brindle = white

    White x Brindle
    * White carrying only brindle x brindle only = brindle
    * White carrying only brindle x brindle carrying only white = white or brindle
    * White carrying only brindle x brindle carrying only red = brindle
    * White carrying only brindle x brindle carrying white and red = white or brindle
    * White carrying only red x brindle only = brindle
    * White carrying only red x brindle carrying only white = white or brindle
    * White carrying only red x brindle carrying only red = red or brindle
    * White carrying only red x brindle carrying white and red = red, white, or brindle
    * White carrying red and brindle x brindle only = brindle

    * Brindle carrying only white x brindle carrying only red = brindle
    * Brindle carrying only white x brindle carrying white and red = white or brindle
    * Brindle carrying only red x brindle carrying only red = red or brindle
    * Brindle carrying only red x brindle carrying white and red = red or brindle
    * Brindle carrying white and red x brindle carrying white and red = red, white, or brindle

  • Haha sorry I asked, turned the photo thread into a science class. Thanks to everyone for explaining though :)
  • Okay, @poeticdragon, 'fess up. You had this written down ahead of time. :-)

I can't even read through all of that in one sitting. :-)
  • HEADACHE!!!!
  • Actually I didn't, and in fact, rewrote it like 3 times before posting it. I originally started typing it up with percentages and listing the results as whether or not they were carriers for the other colors too. Then I thought to hell with that. If someone wants to know something specific for a pairing I can just answer that.

For example, Mosura is white carrying only brindle and Ghidora is brindle carrying only red. Their puppies will all be brindle, but 50% will be brindle carrying white and red and the other 50% will be brindle carrying only white.
  • This has nothing to do with coat color, but I have to say I find ultrasound photos loathsome if they are human, but puppies? I'm like yeah, bring 'em on! *lol*
  • *sends Lisa my ultrasound pictures for her to have to coo at*
  • Loathsome? Wow, that's a strong opinion! I'm just apathetic about them.

I wish the vet had taken video. You could see them better than in the still shots. I saw paws and tails and cuteness!
  • Congratulations!

I have to agree I like puppy ultrasound photos better than baby ones... though on the whole I tend to consider puppies a heck of a lot cuter than babies.
  • Wow awesome! Congratulations! It'll be so fun to have Halloween puppies. :)
  • Congratulations! Momma looks beautiful in her pics.
  • @poeticdragon impressive! I would love to have a Silver/Blue Brindle Akita or a diluted red brindle like Emilie's C'kyoto. So if one of these puppies ever arrives, let me know! I'll be on the first flight to CA!
