Cow hooves chews

edited October 2012 in General
I bought ChoCho and Goro cow hooves 3 months ago and they're about half way through with it. They have lasted a super long time and the dogs seem to like them a ton. They're only a buck so i would like to keep buying it for them...
BUT are they safe for dogs?

  • I used to buy them for Reilly long ago but stopped because 1) they STANK! and 2) she would swallow them when they got small enough to fit down her big rabbit-swallowing throat, and then puke up hooves (this is also why she doesnt get Himalayan chews anymore either :( but those dont stink.

I dont know if they are bad for dogs who chew things *sensibly*...

I do know this somewhat tangential tidbit- that if bears kill and eat a fawn in the spring, the tiny hooves will pass out whole in their poop, so not digestible to bears.

LOL way to be morbid @WrylyBrindle!

I discovered hooves three months ago and it was chewed on by three different dogs (Shiba, Kai, and GS mix) yet still lasted up until about 2 weeks ago. It would've lasted longer except my sister's GS mix demolishes any chew toy within 3 days, it probly would've lasted another two months if just Ren. I haven't seen any ill effects like vomiting or choking so they seem pretty safe from my end. The way Ren and Tsune chewed it seems like they just gradually get thinner and thinner until they chip off in tiny bits and get swallowed. Hooves are made of the same thing our nails (or is it our hair?) are, so I'd assume they're safe.
  • Yeah ChoCho and Goro slabber on it enough that it becomes softer.
  • just sharing my wealth of kindof useless nature facts! :)
  • They are favorites around here
