Tokyo, Japan info

edited November 2012 in General
im planning a side trip to tokyo, japan since ill already be in asia next month. can anyone tell me some areas i can go to see some nihonken? would love to see kais, kishus and hokkaidos in person! im guessing that it would be hard to do unless i go out to where the breeders actually are. (probably not in tokyo though!) is there some sort of area where pet stuff is? i wouldnt mind getting some things for ghost and my fiance would like some stuffed animals, toys etc of the japanese breeds. all i could find a couple of years ago in osaka was a small shiba stuffed toy.

any other suggestions of places to go to or eat would be great as well! i havent been to tokyo in a long time.

oooo i've always wanted one of those badass akita show collars. I skipped the opportunity when claire was in japan last and I regret it. If you're down, I would totally send some paypal monies over to you if you ran across that store. Of course, if you were up to it! :)

you should ask @poeticdragon about all the cool places to go!

Unfortunately I cannot help with the Inu or toys but I had a couple of places that I ate at regularly when I was there.

    1. I'm not sure if this place is still there, located in Ginza - Miso Tonkatsu restaurant: http://ginza.yabaton.com/

2.Beef tongue! Never tried it until I went to Tokyo and loved it (there are several of these) - http://www.wannagotojapan.com/tokyo/restaurant/negishi-a-beef-tongue-restaurant-in-shinjuku-tokyo/

If I can remember some others then I will be sure to post. I seem to have forgotten a lot of the names and I wasn't able to find them on Google. Anyways, have a great trip!
  • @jikjak I spent my entire trip keeping an eye out for the Nihon Ken and related merchandise. There wasn't much of either to be found in Tokyo. That said, the Adachiya store on Nakamise street in Asakusa district has a ton of merchandise. Most of it is available online, but going there in person is neat. I'd be interested in a few things I didn't pick up or foresee needing when I was there before. Let me know if you plan to go. Here's my album with just about everything they have: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.377717105581236.94314.100000288498499&type=3

Also, Asakusa Nakamise is just damn cool. You should go there even if you don't buy anything from Adachiya.

To see the dogs you're going to have to either schedule a visit with a breeder or find out the dates of a show, I think.
  • When are you going to be over here?

Dang I'm gonna be out there from dec 19 to jan 6th. Man if you could adjust your trip, might be able to do a little hunting.

I don't know of a good place to get the type f knife you might be looking for. Knives are also somewhat regulated in Japan. I had one custom made so I'm sure either Shigeru or I can help you get a good quality handmade hunting knife.
  • wow, that would be awesome! what will you be hunting for? boar and deer?
unfortunately i cant change my dates any later than they already are or else id be down to do that!

its okay about the knives if its regulated over there. i can always order from japanknives.com

anyways i gotta get some sleep. off hunting in the am and hopefully ill be able to bring home some deer!
  • We would be hunting for both. Good luck on the hunt Terrance! I hunted yesterday AM and got to watch some forkies chase does. The rut is on here in SoCal, just waiting for some thing a little bit bigger.

I would also suggest japanknives.com although some of the blades are a little over priced.
  • Wow that sounds like fun! I wish i could change my dates! Is it rifle hunting or bow?

Always nice to see game on a hunt. Are you looking for that trophy buck? Hehe
  • Gen, are the guys going to be hunting Kanagawa or Shizuoka?
  • I think Shizuoka, I'm going to take my bow again this year and try and nab a big hog that's been eating the chicken feed behind the house.

Maybe we can meet up Shugeru, and I can tag along on a hut with ya?
  • Man both trips sound like a great time! I may have to paypal you some money for a sweet show collar or something for Ren :)
  • We'll definitely have to get together while you're here, Gen. Season starts in just over a week, I may move back out to Chiba for the 3 months.
  • i'm with cezieg, i'll throw down for a sweet show collar too. i got a paypal :)))
  • just let me know which items you guys want (size, model etc) and ill try to buy them for you.

this store is in Asakusa. I have no idea where Asakusa is, so if it is too far, absolutely no worries. Poeticdragon's been here and I need to figure out what color.

Asakusa is in the Taito district of Tokyo. The Asakusa train station is immediately to the east, however, I've never ridden that route. Instead we walked to Asakusa from the Ueno Station to the south west. This is one of the major hubs in Tokyo and was a very convenient "base of operations" for us while we were in the city. Ueno is just a few stops north of Tokyo Station, after Kanda and Akihabara. We found a great little hotel just a couple blocks from the station I would be happy to recommend. From there we could see the new Tokyo Skytree right down the street -- looked amazing.

As a foreigner, you have the ability to purchase a JR rail pass. This pass will get you on any Japan Railway train or bus for free. The savings is huge, especially if you end up riding any of the Shinkansen (bullet trains). This pass cannot be purchased inside the country. We didn't use it for busses very much, but getting on and off trains at our leisure was nice. A few of the trains still require reserved seating, so you have to get a ticket, but its free. There are many options for the rail pass depending on which train lines you want to use and how many days you want it active for.
  • im only there for 4 nights (nov.27-dec.1), and ill be staying in the tokyo area, would i still need the rail pass?
i was advised to just get a suica/nex pass at the airport (also cannot be purchased in the country).
ive booked a hotel right at the shibuya train station as well so it should be very convenient and hopefully easy to get around.

i wish there was a store that has this kind of stuff that i could go to as well.(link from your other thread)
i wonder if i could have that stuff shipped to the hotel before i get there.

Does the other pass get you on the JR trains, or have routes that go to the same area? We never needed to ride on Suica so I don't know how good the coverage is. For just four days, and not leaving Tokyo or riding a bullet train, its probably fine though. At worst it may be a little inconvenient to get to a specific place, or you might have to buy a ticket if Suica doesn't have a carrier in that area.

My father lost his pass up in Morioka (we think it was stolen) so had to buy tickets for everywhere we went. Inside Tokyo, he was paying 70 to 350 yen one way, depending on the station we got on and off at.
  • ahh i see. where does that JR rail pass go?
  • Just about everywhere! I didn't find a place that JR trains couldn't get me to. But maybe Suica is just as good I don't know. So don't think you have to buy a JR pass. The advice you got to get a Suica pass will probably be fine.
  • Get the JR rail pass if you plan to travel further out from Tokyo metro area. If you're going for a short stay and plan to stay in the Tokyo area, just get the suica pass.
  • Out of curiousity, on http://waken-zanmai.jp/SHOP/FPKAI005_UNA_5721.html and some other items, does anyone know what "ryunosuke" means?
  • i think its the dogs name, seems like you can have them make the item with your own dog's name instead.
  • edited November 2012
@cezieg yeah, it's just the dog's name like jikjak said. One the said it says you can have it written in roman letters, hiragana, katakana, or kanji.
  • Love the kai ken the one with cherry blossoms are my fav. :)
  • Thanks @jikjak @Hinata23 that's awesome! There's so much cool dog swag on that site. Pretty sweet seeing Kai and breed specific designs.
  • if only there was a physical store i could go to in order to buy that stuff!
  • Gah, the Hokkaido stuff. One of those stickers for my car would be sweet. And the mug was cute, too.
  • Jikjak, I will be free during the day when you are here. If you need some help getting around or want some suggestions just let me know. I wouldn't mind checking out that store in Asakusa as well.
PS: just get the Suica or Passmo pass as they are both good for all the trains, subways and buses in Tokyo. They are just prepaid cards and can also be used at most convenience stores as well.
