  • In order to use a shock collar effectively, you really need to know what you are doing. It is too easy to screw up with them, so your best bet is to use an alternative method of training.
  • No. I think they are cruel and there have been articles talking about how they can increase aggression in dogs. Do NOT use it.
  • There is a time and a place where this training tool may be of use but as @Calia said, it's very easy to use one improperly.
  • i don't support shock collars, especially used on an akita. I would recommend positive reinforcement instead. If you feel you absoultly must use a shock collar, that is your porogative, just learn to use it correctly.

You run the chance of creating an aggressive dog, and the dog can misinterpret the shock coming from a non-threatening object or yourself, and thus create fear issues that will be difficult to undo. Also, you should never have to use pain to train your dog. That is cruel, unnecessary and over-correcting.

What are you planning to teach your pups?
  • I would not use it. I agree with the above statements and I believe a shock collar could potentially create a whole new set of behavioral/mental problems for the dog. You could always sell the collar or (if it is new/unopened) you could return it and exchange it for something you would use.

Are you having behavioral issues that you are trying to correct?
  • Im one of the few here that use a ecollar. The only time I use a ecollar is for training my hunting dogs to either break them of chasing unwanted animals, rattle snake avoidance, and retriever training. BUT it's used at a minimum as you can easily ruin a dog with over use.

I agree that positive reinforcement is the best way but at time ecollars have their place. For NKs ecollar is extremely difficult to use properly in obedience and correcting unwanted behavior so if you are having issues with your Akita, try consulting with a specialist or ask folks like Crispy or the Andersons who has a good amount of experience with problem dogs.
  • someone in our company gave it to me. his friend is owner of this company.
I'm not planning to use it since my wife will kill me if I do.
also i'm not expert trainer to use this right anyways.
Just asked this question because I see some hunters in this forum.
karin- I don't have anything to train. she is just awsome and I like her as is.
Tachi- he gets very scary for everything. I don't think this shock collar will work with his attitude.
