Sensitive Kai

edited November 2012 in Kai Ken (甲斐犬)
So I always knew kazue had formed a pretty close bond with me. What surprised me was during the past 24 hours I have had 2 panic attacks. This is something I have dealt with for about 5 years now. About 2 years ago they stopped and I was weaned off the meds. I have noticed on both occasions, kazue has come to me to try to comfort me about 5-10 minutes before I feel the onset of the panic attack. None of te other dogs respond like she does. They come to me once the attack starts, she is the only one who is signaling the onset of an attack.

  • wow. That is very interesting. I wonder if you can use her as a early warning service dog for your attacks?

I hope Ritsu isn't giving you the panic attacks. lol
  • No, ritsu is not causing it:) he is being a very good boy.
  • I've heard of therapy dogs that can sense seizures about 10-15 minutes before they come. There was a show about a little girl who would have some pretty bad seizures a couple times a month and the dog would go get the parents before it happened so she wouldn't hurt herself.

That's very impressive of Kazue.. I think you can definitely use her as an early warning service dog like @brada1878 said
  • That is an amazing story. You got a great dog there :)

    As a side note...
You could totally turn her into a service dog, then you could take her to Walmart and malls and bars and it would be absolutely legal.
  • Good girl Kazue!!!

I'm not sure if it's Kais in general, or just mine, but I think that Kais because of their sensitivity can become wonderful service dogs. Koda shares his niece's knack for being sensitive to emotional distress and throws calming behaviors to humans and other dogs.

Mika has told me twice when my blood sugar levels dropped to the 50's this summer. She frantically kissed my face while I was pretty zoned out on the couch. She kind've brought me to and got me to test myself.
  • Wow that's pretty interesting, good girl Kazue :) Animals are amazing. Are you doing ok? I'm not familiar with panic attacks or if they give you any lasting anxiety
  • That's pretty cool!

And yeah, I've heard of seizure dogs being able to sense it before it comes on too (there was a great story of a woman with an Akita who was NOT a trained dog, but the dog stopped her from driving and she had a seizure about 10 minutes later, so she decided to train the dog as a service dog, and did!)

So you've got a Kai there who can see the signs of an panic attack! Super cool!

(my Kai has absolutely no sensitivity to me at all. He still think my feet, in slippers, are toys that are not attached to me, so he pounces on them and bites them. Hard!)
  • @shibamistress--LOL about Leo being insensitive...maybe when he grows up!!

@sjp051993--Sorry to hear about your attacks...I hope you things will get better soon.

Kaiju (@brada1878) is such a loving and sweet dog! He is in the bay with me right now and when my nephew is sad he starts coming over to lick him, it's really sweet. Too bad he is too "jerky" with other dogs to be a service dog, or else I would totally get him trained!
  • Once the attack is over, I am usually just tired. The mild ones are usually just a racing heart, and trouble breathing. The bad ones mimic a heart attack. Last time I had a bad one, I spent the night in the cardiac unit of the hospital.
