Album/documents for new owners

edited December 2012 in General
Hey, I'm putting together some cool albums for each of my puppies to go to their new families. I like artsy stuff and the idea is that the owner can use the binder to keep important documents and family photos for the dog's entire life. Here is what I have so far, any ideas what else I need or should add?

12" x 12" 3-ring 'scrapbook' binder
Photo and sheet protectors with extras
Small CD sleeve and business card holder

Name kanji art 8.5" x 11"
Litter growth chart 8.5" x 11"
12 page development diary 8.5" x 11"
Family tree (temp. pedigree) 8.5" x 11"
Copy of parents' pedigrees 8.5" x 11"
Medical records and vaccine history 8.5" x 11"
Copy of the signed sales contract 8.5" x 11"
~100 individual photo highlights 4" x 6"
~120 group photo highlights 4" x 6"

CD with all photos and videos for the litter
Business card / contact info
Pawprint 4" x 6"

I'm so excited about this, I will probably make one for the puppy I keep just so I get to have a cool album, too! LOL

  • That all sounds great! Nice job. Now I want to do one for my dogs lol
If you are having the pups micro-chipped before they leave I would add a separate spot for that information. Other than that I can't think of anything.

Do you know which pup you're keeping?
  • Nope, still don't know if there are long coats. Soon.
  • That's such a cute idea!
  • Maybe a blow-up of their name in Japanese characters? Treat it like calligraphy art?
  • Neat idea! Puppy paw print impressions maybe? That's a lot of work.
  • Oooh I like both of those. The "caligraphy" should be easy, but oh man I can imagine how messy paw prints might be... lol
  • I remember when we got our chocolate lab, her breeder gave us a little photo book of her themed with her color. (She had a yellow collar and we used to refer to her as Miss Yellow before we named her.)
  • That's super cool! What a lovely thing to send along with the puppy!

My friend's GSD breeder did something like this, including a long pedigree, and that's were we discovered that some of the dogs in Czech lines were named Von Hitler. YIKES!
  • YIKES indeed!

Well I don't know how far back I can go with the family tree.... I don't even have Bijo's pedigree yet (sigh). I have a copy of the sire's lol.
  • Puppy paw prints!!!!!!

    Wow Claire, that's totally awesome!!!
I like @Ayk 's idea. A small insert with their name in Kanji and the meaning in English.
Maybe a small clippet of their puppy fur?? LOL.
It would be cute to do puppy paw prints...and keep doing them as they get bigger.

    Something like this?

  • Yah!!! that'll be a great addition to the doggy book. :)
  • That's cool.
  • Is this a common thing breeders do- albums and so forth?

Juno left her paw prints right on my work table when she climbed up while I was inking some woodcuts, ran across the slab and I had to catch her before she left her paws all over the studio. :) I still smile when Im at the table and see her little black prints there where I work. Good ol Juno!
  • Nope, it's not common.

I kinda hope that it won't become common, too, so I won't be expected to do it. :-p (That's a lot of effort for me.)
  • My Shiba breeder does something similar to this, and no, I would say it isn't common but I do think it is a very nice thing for the new family.
  • For Miyu, I was given a DVD that had a movie slideshow of her puppy pics, she had the cutest pink nose. Personally, I wouldn't include their names unless you know for sure that those will be their permanent names. Though it would be cool to have a picture of both parents with their names done in similar fashion.

@Calia It would be for their registered name. People can use whatever call name they want -- heavens know I do. My dogs' call names have nothing to do with their registered names.
  • Asheley, Wraith's breeder did something like this for Wraith. It was pretty awesome :)

I'd include pics / info of the parents. It was really cool for me having that since I wasn't able to meet the parents in person. ~
  • Of course I procrastinate till the last minute... Here's my health record trifold though! :D

  • My JA pup breeder @dogmom8 included something very sweet-- she included a letter written from the puppy's perspective on how to take care of her (feeding, potty training, grooming), house her (inside like a member of the family, vs. outside in a kennel), and train her (positive reinforcement and patience). It still bring tears to my eyes every time I read it...

ps. Please don't do the English name translated back to Kanji back to English. That Kanji-letters for Rebecca is based on Mandarin Chinese pronunciation, no Japanese-speaking person would ever pronounce those 3 letters as Rebecca sounding. Don't do it, don't do it!
  • The puppies all have Japanese names, its pretty much required by AKIHO.
  • @poetic dragon, the Japanese names you picked out are lovely. I was saying if they're given an Anglosized call names, it's not worth coming up w/ Kania-equivalents that ends up w/ nonsense in English
  • @rikumom - the Rebecca example was just an example pulled from the internet I assume. The "translations" that @poeticdragon will be using are not sound translations (like the Rebecca example). It's the direct word-for-word translation. See the example she has for Akaryu.

Yeah... I'm doing it for their registered names not their call names. (Although three of the four do actually have Japanese call names too.)
  • @mapletwinkie, The Rebecca example is out of the world b/c it's sound translation from English to Kanji, then direct word for word translation back from Kanji to English.

I guess when one recognizes the language, one just cringes at the misuse/abuse.
Plus my real name is a shorten version of Rebecca. Double cringe here.
  • @rikumom - lol, i totally know what you're saying. I'm part Chinese too, and cringe often at chinese translations of western names. I remember one time in school a white kid named Alex wanted an asian translation of his name, so the asian kids wrote out Ah" lik see", but using the kanji of "powerful poo". When he found out when it meant he was so hurt! Funny but horrible at the same time!

My japanese name is Reiko 麗子. My English name ( or Call Name LOL! ) is Lisa. Hahhaaa
