getting out pine sap

edited December 2012 in General
So my neighbor cut his ginormous pine tree and huge branches fell into my backyard. It seems that Kaiju rolled all around in it because there is sap all over him now. Any suggestions on how to get it off?

  • Was it peanut butter that worked on sap?
  • Something oily is supposed to help (hence the peanut butter, I guess), but unfortunately, I have not found that it really works. I'm afraid what we do is cut it out, but in our case, I've never had more that a few small patches to deal with. :(

On a side note, though, earlier this week when I was going nuts because both Oskar and Bel were sick, Leo threw up, and I thought, NO! I can't take this! Why did he throw up? He'd been eating gobs of pine sap. Not the smartest thing he's ever done!
  • Peanut butter sort of worked but it is messy and not highly effective. De-Solv-It works great and Walmart used to carry it. I have not purchased or used this in a long time but it used to be all natural or organic (I can't remember what the bottle said) and the vet I was working for at the time is the one that recommended it for tree sap. It removes sap very well and bubble gum, too lol Check the ingredients and/or check with your vet just to make sure it is still safe to use on his fur. If you do use it- Give him a bath right after you are done.

    Good luck!
  • Melt O Clean, just make sure to give Kaiju a bath after words. I use it at work all the time it's safe to use on your skin but it can dry it out.
  • I use Pam spray. Non toxic!
  • Same thing happened to me with the neighbors tree, only it was with Grym, the long coated CO. The Pam worked great, no mess and no bath.
  • Pam!

Would coconut oil work? It's a oil and the dog would smell all tropical! haha

    Sorry this happened. :\

I never had this issue with our pine tree coarse the dogs we had then never rolled on the stuff.

Saya rolls once in a blue moon. Bella loves roll on various things luckily she hasn't rubbed or rolled on pine tree stuff.

I can sympathize as Saya had gum stuck on the pads of her feet! I had use ice cubes to help get some of it off and eventually I got enough off I let her just walk around and it came off as she walked around.
