Update from the No-Internet Abyss

edited December 2012 in General
Ous FiOS is down. I'm up to 39 hours and counting with no Internet, TV, Netflix, Pandora, telephone, etc. The puppycam has been offline. I'm way behind on forum threads - probably not going to read them all today. I am currently at a friend's house (with the 6-week-old puppies in tow) so I can actually do work today.

The puppies are doing great! They're really puppy-like now. Morticia is becoming the most confident explorer and quite the escape artist. I think Ichabod is a long coat but really wish someone with more experience would come to my house and give me their opinion on him. I don't think the photos of him do justice to how woolly he is especially his ears. A friend is going to help me take some nice stacked photos this weekend.

Mosura is doing a lot better as well. When I last took her to the vet a month ago, we did a bunch of tests for skin stuff and found that she had a UTI. The vet asked if we wanted to do a culture on the bacteria to find out what it is, and I agreed. Turns out it was a good idea -- it was resistant to the antibiotics we'd already been prescribed. We switched meds to stuff that is $5/pill but it worked great. It also cleared up her skin problem! She's been mildly itchy but not chewing on herself at all. Her fur is growing back, the rash on her belly is completely gone, and there's no more scabs from scratching herself. No sign of flea dander either. She's still out of coat, but looking so much better. Also, she's feeling better as well. She's been less anxious and fearful and more sociable. She hasn't shown any fear/terror at anything for a couple weeks. @king_bidgood came over with her boyfriend to visit the puppies last weekend, and Mosura was as outgoing as I've ever seen her. She didn't cower or hide in the corner of the yard barking at them, and in fact went up to check them out a few times and let them pet her (over the head even!). I was amazed. Maybe she's been feeling poorly with this antibiotic-resistant infection for a LONG time and feeling poorly increased her fear...

December is a sad month for us, as in addition to the puppies leaving the nest, we're rehoming two of our dogs. Mosura is going to live with my parents for an extended trial period, leaving tomorrow. I will take Gojira to Texas to (hopefully) live with my best friend on the 30th. The puppies start going home on the 26th. Its a very sad time for my husband and I. We will miss all of them greatly (but being honest, I'll miss Gojira most of all. She is my favorite and always has been.) At least in Dallas, Gojira will be able to meet and hopefully befriend @jellyfart's Toki and I'll be getting lots of updates from her and my friend.

I guess that's it for now. I don't know when I'll be able to post again...

  • Glad to hear Mosura is doing much better. :) Rehoming a dog is always so hard to do :( But, you have to keep in mind that is for the best interest of the dog! You know, in general, 2012 has been really rough...I cannot WAIT for it to be over!
  • Glad your back! I was worried about you. It's hard to rehome dogs, but at least they'll be with friends and family. I hope things work out for them.

I hope puppies get great homes too.

    Morticia sounds adventurous.
  • That's great news about Mosura's improvement, and I hope that things will continue going well for her after she transitions to your parent's home. Gojira being re-homed must be really tough, especially after she seems to have mellowed, but it sounds like she's going to a great home.

For the pups, you could try the 'halo' test in Mals and see if it comes true or not in JAs. Basically, normal coats will have longer guard hairs at 5 weeks and create a halo when held up with the sun behind them. Long coats will be solid/even length.

There's an example if you scroll down to the puppy pics here: http://www.kwestmals.com/malcolorgeneticsCoatLength.html
  • ok ok I'll come by cheez :). I've been working in the field all week and I'm helping the local girls water polo team out. Oh and K is in heat so it's time to get ready to breed. I'll see what I can do Monday Tuesday.

Coming from someone who knows nothing about puppies or JA's or dogs for that matter (but spends countless hours looking at JA's online if that's any credit lol), the recent pics of Ichabod had me wondering if he was a coat. So I started comparing Ichabod's photos with his sisters, and then with Meichan and her litter. My opinion obviously holds no water, but I did notice he's especially furry. I have my fingers crossed that he may just be furrier cuz he's a male...

Really glad to hear that Mosura is doing better. I'm sorry for the tough situation that you're in, I'm sure it's really sad to have to rehome your dogs. You've been through so much this year, good times and tough times, you'll come out of this just fine as you always have. All the best, update us when you can. You're in our thoughts!!
  • Our FiOS is back -- Huzzah!

Sean send me your phone number, I didn't save it in my contacts apparently so I couldn't text you bout coming over, lol.
  • @ayk I tried the halo test but if anything it convinced me they're all long coats! The tops of the puppies' heads all look like Gojira's does in this picture:

  • Dawww that's baby Gojira? She's always been a beautiful looking dog :) So many dogs leaving must be pretty bittersweet for you guys, but it'll all be worth it when you hear back about how great they're living.

Actually, the pup pic of Gojira = halo around head, neck and arms = normal coat. :-)

These pics are of normal coated mals with halos:

And below, these pics are of long coated mals with no halos:

  • Oh, heh, it looks a lot different on my desktop vs trying to see it on my tiny laptop screen.
