There was a guy on craigslist yesterday that posted a picture of a wanted dog napper in our area. He had been arrested in Oregon for stealing dogs and selling them to laboratories while falsifying bills of sale from their owners using deceased peoples names.
This person actually lives pretty close to where I do, as in the next town over. I saw it in the local news.
The thing is....it's really hard to tell what is going on from this story. There are plenty of people who DO neglect their dogs out here, and while it is no longer legal in our county to tie out dogs, people do, and totally neglect them--no shelter, water, etc. And some people just let them run loose of course. Which doesn't mean she should kidnap them!
But for all I know, she's just crazy, too. I know I'm super suspicious of people who come up to the fence, and if I see them, I always ask them to step away from the dogs immediately (not that most of them get that close if Oskar is out!) The only one I would worry about is Leo, who is friendly--but he doesn't get to go outside by himself. None of the others would let someone get near them.
haha... Yea, I won't lie, that was one of our reasons for having human-aggressive dogs who can be out with our other dogs. We are very public and have a lot of rare breeds, so I am sure we'll attract some crazies one day - but of the looking-to-make-money variety, not of the crazy-vigilante-dog-rescuer variety (I hope).
Yeah, even though Oskar is not a CO, he is protective and territorial, so I'm glad to have him, because Leo would go right up to someone! (And I have seen people at our fence trying to pet the dogs, and I swear I've seen that woman around--maybe in the grocery store or the thrift store. her pic looks awfully familiar)
A couple of idiots have tried to pet Oskar when he's barking like crazy, but mostly I've seen people going "aww" about Leo (or even crazy Bel who is usually growling and barking her head off), and then when Oskar charges the fence, they go "Holy shit! What's that? A bear?" *lol* True, I've heard the "that thing is as big as a bear" several times! (And Oskar is, for the record, only 110 pounds)
@Zinja - We were, but Jen lost interest in wool and so we dropped it. I'm glad we did as that would have been a lot of work. I still want a pack animal tho - a pack yak or llama would be cool.
