I saw that you have already been approved for a litter in spring 2014 from Suteishii Kennels. Does the breeder know you are looking to get on others' waiting lists as well?
Yeah she does. Im willing to wait if I cannot find other breeders that will have a liter earlier. The breeder even referred me to Yamabushi Kennel and Marsha Short. but I have not gotten a reply back from them.

@AndrewT1993 No, there are no breeders near Florida. Stacy and Marsha's kennel's are the closest ones. Brad (Yamabushi/ @brada1878) has very busy days. He (or his wife) will get back to you as soon as possible. Everyone just finished having litters... So it's going to be a bit until they start up again.
Ok, I am fine with waiting. I was just wondering who are the Kai Ken breeders out there because I tried googling Kai Ken breeders and didn't come up with much.
You've pretty much covered the Kai breeders. They're very rare dogs, so it's not like there are that many breeders, litters available, etc. Its going to be a wait, now, so you might as well get used to that!
(And you know, even with dogs that aren't rare breeds, it's all about waiting--dog breeders have plenty else going on in their lives, and lots of dogs to take care of, so it's not uncommon to have to wait on responses.)
I have considered it but have not been able to find any information on it. The only "information" I have found is that you have to be able to speak Japanese. (I don't know how true that is)
That sounds great lol but I would rather leave it to the actual breeders. This is the one dog that I don't want ruined by over breeding or careless breeding.
@AndrewT1993 - We received your emails, sorry for the delay. Jen will get to you soon, we are busy these days. You are in good hands with Stacey anyways, and we have not breeding plans for this year ATM.
Dogs only come into season twice a year, and kai breeders are not factories, cranking out products to meet demand. A litter is commonly 3 -4 pups, and bitches arent bred every heat. If a breeder has 15 interested families, it can be a while. Mirka was also looking for a show/breeding dog, and all of us want the *right* match in temperament- so imagine you are breeder and you have 3 puppies in spring and 7 in the fall, thats only 10 homes. and two owners want show dogs, and one wants a hunting candidate, and two hope to do dog sports and the rest want companions.
Understand too that while Brad has 20 dogs, I think only 4 or 5 are female kai, and those are various ages and stages of their breeding life. They dont repeat breedings and they dont breed back to back to back, because its very taxing on the mothers and they need a rest. Remember that kai are very few. You cant compare to something like a sporting breed that has large litters and there so many of them around.
In addition, when you do your research, you learn what the parents are like- and you and the breeder have conversations and figure out that what you want is a hunting pup probably from Haru, say. Not "I want a kai pup this summer and I prefer a red one" (people do say such things) So we all wait for the right pup and its okay!
@AndrewT1993 They are an amazing rare breed and the wait list can be LONG. Some people want a pup from a specific litter or are looking for a specific coat color. I think I waited 2 years before Yamabushi had their first litter (I was on their waiting list since Fall 2009). These dogs are expensive and some people just want the best they can get
I didnt go count- but you are exactly right! I couldnt remember if he still had an import female around. I think Stacey is also in the same situation- resting Tora after 2 litters and Kazue is a baby still.
@CarabooA Said "I always feel like the right dog comes into our lives at the right time!" and I think this is very true so being on the waiting list is just the universe lining up the perfect dog for you.
@WrylyBrindle Oh, I didn't know that. I have never bought a dog from a breeder before. One of my past dog was a stray and the other was a rescue at a shelter. I haven't research how and how often female dogs are bred.. Sorry if I sounded incompetent.
not incompetent! We are all learning, so one has to find these things out some way. Two of my dogs are shelter dogs too, so much about purebred dogs has been new and sometimes strange to me. But- I have been on this forum for several years and learned a lot, and for a long time I thought there was no way I would ever be able to have a kai. But in time, I have been blessed with Juno and then Matsu, and they are perfect for our life and home. Totally worth the wait and the time spent learning! As yours will be!
@AndrewT1993, it's not just Kais, other than shibas, the other Nihon Kens are hard to come by too. @WrylyBrindle's excellent explanation also applied to my search to add a 2nd dog to my family. And while shibas seem more readily available, the *right* match in temperament is so tricky!!!

WrylyBrindle is spot on!
Doesn't Brad only have 3 females producing pups at the moment? Ayu, Kumi, and Haru? I thought Nami was too young.
No worries we all learn things.
During your wait you can go meet some local kai ken owners get feel for the breed maybe have multiple meetings with different ones.
WrylyBrindle explained it well.
I agree waiting can be hard, but worth it.
Your lucky there is some kai ken owners in your state to meet. Some states don't have any other kai ken owners or just one.
