Origin of breed

edited January 2013 in General
In my puppy's class, there is two 14 week old Shiba Inus, littermates.
No one else in the class knew what the Shiba was, so they were asking the owners about them..
They didn't even know Shibas were from Japan! They thought I mistaken it for another breed...
Obviously they didn't do their research..

But, I don't know. Shibas kinda look japanese to me.
All the Nihon Ken do.. Its their little almond-y shaped eyes.

Do you all know the Origin of your breeds ?

If you want more information about all the NK breeds, I suggest you to read the book: Japanese dogs from Michiko Chiba. It really explain the origin of each breed. + as a bonus, you have some true stories about them like Hachiko.

So yes, I do know the origin of each of them (but not by heart). I did research on the Shiba Inu before I got Saki as well on the Shikoku since I will get one soon.
  • I don't have a Japanese dog, but I do know the origin of the breed I do have (Finnish Lapphund). Kinda sad if people don't even know what country the breed they have is from--most dog breed books will give at least that much information on breed history!
  • yes, I do.

Love to have that book, myself, but it's out of print and going for like $200 on ebay. :(

There is plenty of information on the breeds out there--some of it is even accurate. ;) Lots of info. here, for example.

  • I bought that book when it first came out. :) Maybe there might be copies in Japan and they could be brought over to the US and auctioned as a fundraiser for the first Shikoku or Kai specialty?
  • Wish I had a copy of the Michiko Chiba book, but I'll settle for my photocopy, which I acquired from this fabulous place called... the library. ;)

I also recommend Nicholas Roden, Pawprints in Japan if you can find it. Aaron Skabelund's Empire of Dogsis more academic and not breed-specific, but it's fascinating cultural background, as is Brett Walker's Lost Wolves of Japan (specifically in regards to how we might put the Ainu/Hokkaido into context).
  • The new copies on Amazon are expensive, but the used ones aren't bad.
  • Or, for a basic understand of the origin of each Nihon ken breed, you could read this: http://www.bradanderson.org/blog/2012/03/my-article-on-the-six-native-japanese-dog-breeds-has-been-published/

    Just say'n ;)

You guys, check out amazon for the book. There are used copies available for under $50. That's where I got my copy for about $35, it was once a library book:

    Brad who? ;)

But yes, much of my knowledge of NK came from this forum!

  • I like using combo of people's blog's, forum info and books for my breed learning. :)

I've read that too and many other things.

I read the book on the Japanese breeds from library.. I might get it used someday.
