soft crate recommendations?

edited February 2013 in General
Does anyone here use soft crates? I am looking for one so I can take Toki places where he needs a crate, and having a crate that is made of fabric seems convenient. Lugging around a metal wire crate is HELL, even if it is "portable".

I saw @poeticdragon's soft crate used for ghidora at this past AKIHO/JACA show in California and I was envious ;)
I've decided no more wire crate, and since Toki doesn't chew, I figured I would give it a go.

Any input, recommendations, or advice is welcome.

  • We use this:

We also had the problem of lugging a really heavy metal wire crate for travel (because Hana can't handle being in the car without one, and she doesn't like the small plastic crate used for the airplane because it's not comfortable)
It's relatively inexpensive (we also got it on sale) and it's really light and easy to pack up. We use it for Hana's safe crate place for downstairs, and for travel in the car.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OX89T2 This is the one we have. I don't know why its only showing the small size now. Maybe Midwest no longer has the large size (or Amazon stopped carrying it).

Here are some other options: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_i_0?rh=k:soft+crate,i:pets. I think they're pretty much all created equal, just depends on what door, flap, and pocket options you want.
  • Just a heads-up that one good scratch by the dog's paw, usually during "hey! don't leave me!" will create a sizable rip.

I know what you mean about toting around the metal crate. The Poongsan's doesn't fit in the trunk of my Civic, too. I use a 3 ft tall x-pen with a top and it's a lot more portable and lighter for me. I also carry around a folding luggage carrier if the carrying distance ends up being far.
  • @ayk good advice. Though, Toki is usually saying to me "mama, too much hugging, not in public, i need my "me" time", lol. i was thinking about getting an xpen but i decided those are for puppies and dogs that thrive off human affection, or, at least decidedly not for Toki because he likes his personal space. But i'll probably get an xpen for my next puppy.

I used to have a civic. They can hold a lot more than you think, lol! But a big crate, no. I feel ya.
  • We use the following crate that we bought from Amazon. List price was $120, but Amazon had it for $50 (both times we bought it, since we have one for each dog now).

We found the wire crates we had were just too much pain in the ___ to be toting around, especially if we eventually wanted to do sporting events like agility. They now are just fixtures in our house for training and time out purposes.

I do worry when one of them starts scratching at it to get out, but so far that hasn't created any big tears, but I can see how it could. The only thing that has happened with the soft sided crate was with my new puppy he managed to tip it forward trying to see if he could get the top access door open, when he tipped it the top access door was now a side access door. If we hadn't noticed right away he would have found himself in a very strange position and/or he may have kept tipping/rolling the crate around until something gave and he could get out. Keep in mind we had him only a week or so at that point, so we were still working on his crate manners.
  • I got the crate I purchases (instead of the one above, for example) because it has flaps on all sides to cover it. Seeing how barky Toki is in public events, something like that is worth considering!
  • exactly. I want something I can parakeet him. I think even if he gets better aquainted with crowds of people, he will always be vocal. Plus, sometimes he just needs a time out from the world, he likes his personal space. Covers would be nice.
  • I have the elitefield as well. It's a lot sturdier than it looks.
  • At the pet expo about three years ago. K ate through one of the cheaper ones.
  • I've got a pair of these: http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=482&ParentCat=158
They aren't super duper amazing, but they work for when I need a crate and it's not for something where a dog will be trying to rip out of it.
