i made her nail bleed!!

So Tsuki's dew claws were getting long and its always this horrible process to get her to let us handle her paws. John has to hold her and comfort her while I hold the clippers and try not to 'touch' her paws to clip her nails.

So today, she was squirming more than last time and I got her dew claw - at what I thought was a good place - snipped - and she started to bleed. Then I look and I have NO flour or corn starch so I get baking powder and hope for the best. 5 or 10 mins later she stops bleeding but we were covered in powder!! Even to hold her paw in a clump of powder made her squirm and scream.

Kitsune lets us handle his paws and clip his nails! He's the newer rescue and he's totally cool with it! Even our fosters, I've only had one foster dog that would put up a fuss - she was a jack russell terrier.

any suggestions to make this process less chaotic?

Maybe it's best to have a groomer clip Tskui's nail. If she's on the table, she can't see what's going with her paws. Otherwise, they have those sling/straightjack things....

    I found the link....
    Kitty Sling

The XL might fit a Shiba. Or, they might have one for dogs.

I distract Nemo with a food bowl lined with peanut butter.  Try to do it often for awhile and just take a bit off at time.

We finally can tag team Niko, I hold her and Chad clips and it now goes quick.  I think the groomer got Sasha once and she finally is doing better.

not that i think all groomers are bad, i just don't trust anyone handling her because she's mouthy (will use teeth to show her feeeelings).

i might try the PB thing. She's just a nasty little shiba when it comes to grooming or nail clipping. grr.

sujewel - that kitty sling is crazy looking! it doesn't keep her mouth away from my hand! we actually have a muzzle but its so terrible to do to her. i think resorting to it will scare her of the process even more!

I haven't tried cutting Ninja's nails yet.  I've taken him to the groomer twice to get it done, but now since he's a little more aggressive, I might have to start doing it myself.  He's definately a screamer though, so it will probably be tough.  For Portia John usually holds her down and puts a yummy treat in front of her and he lets her slowly take it from him and I clip away.  Also, for the back feet, If you have the dog standing and pull back to clip the nails, its muck easier Wink.

I tried to take Rakka to the groomer and they refused to do it because she was too aggressive toward them.  They said I'd have to take her to the vet and have her put under, but there's NO WAY I'm having her put under monthly, that just doesn't seem healthy.  Noah and I do it ourselves now and it's like wrestling a crazy hyper chimpanzee.  We're both pooped after.  Tojo is a screamer, but at least he's small enough that I can just hold him still and Noah clips his nails.  Plus, Rakka will actually bite, Tojo just makes noise.  I want to get Rakka a muzzle, but I haven't decided what kind.  She can still bite through the nylong cloth kind, so I'm going to need a basket muzzle of some kind.

Boy oh boy, the next dog I get I am training to tolerate this much better!  I was too lax with Tojo as a puppy.  Rakka was this way when I got her, but with Tojo, we could have done more to get him used to it.

After posting, I just clipped Portia and Ninja's nails with no treats.  Portia was a little fussy.  Ninja on the other hand, NO PROBLEM!  I lifted up his front paw and he just fell back like he does when he wants his belly rubbed.  He just let me clip away without a flinch.  What a good boy he is!  The only problem, he has a like 1 black nail on each paw.  I get scared trimming those so I trim very little because I don't want to cut too deep.  Same with Portia's Dew Claws, She has 1 black one on her right front paw that I don't dare clip.  I always thought he would scream because when I give him a bath he'll scream when he touches the water and then relaxes after a couple of minutes.  Hm...guess I got lucky Cool

My mom taught me to groom dogs, and she's pretty good at the nail clipping thing, but I always worry about cutting the quick, so I cut enough to keep them short, but probably not as short as I could cut them. It just means I have to clip the nails more often. Of course, if you do it this way, it causes the quick to recede (as, if the nails are not cut for a long while, the quick can go further down the nail...meaning it would require starting with the short, frequent cuts to get back to normal). I'm pretty sure anyway.

Shiba's are all little baby's if it comes to this hahaha

but it can really be a problem some times

Here Foxy and Ryu have get used to it from day one because I had Shinju as a good "start" to show me the Shiba, she still does not like it but she accept it iven that no one else should think about doing this... LOL

    Heidi & Noah:

I don't understand that that groomer send you home, in the worst case you thake a muzzle and just go on.

But on the other hand, if they don't know a Shiba...... they can mak a lot of noise LOL

Whatever your dog does, You don't stop till all the nails are done

because you are giving big attention to her allready before you begin by holdin her and confording, she know's this is how she needs to behave, "thats that fun game when I can get nasty" she thinks

start with every day touchin of the paws when she is next to you or just as a training like you would let her sit before a nice treat. if she is nice, after a while, go furter and start to spreat the thous (sorry for the spelling) and really just a bit of playing with her paws, little massage for the paws if she sleeps next to you or ask for attention so she really get used to getting handeld there

    next step is:

take your clipper with you everywhere you go with her and learn her to get the feeling of you just holding the clipper against her nail while you hold her paw without using it, just the sense is good for the beginning. and after some time, when al goes wel, try to click a nail without she getting held by someone.

don't give youself the time to get nervous, just let her sit and give a paw to you, hold it gentle, en click...

it will go just fine :D

it is a lot of effort and you will need a lot of time before really gettin her trust and gettin to the click part but don't let her win, you are the boss, not she, don't get mad, it will not help, and don't talk to her confording, it wil give her the idea that something is up

with a puppy it is easier, if they start to aked up, you just go on and don't pay attention to it, they will think, "hey, this is not helping" and start to behave, but here if the Shiba is older, it takes more work and time

     Good luck!!!!

on this site below from friends you can see two video's from Shiba's who let click there nails

That cat sling is horrid looking. I think it'll be more work trying to stick my cats in it than trying to clip their nails without it.
  • edited April 2008
Chad said when I showed him the pic as soon as they see that sling they are smart enough to not let you get it on them when they relate it to clipping. Niko HATES her canny collar and runs when it is taken out, along with her sweater or scarfs (my mom was here and made a bunch and tortured Niko with them).

shinju that is wonderful advice!! thank you!

romi - thats awesome! thats how my kitsune is! and i thought HE'D be worse!

gramdemu - ithink you are right about the quick growing thing - they seem to do that quicker on the basset i'm fostering because his nails are SO MUCH thicker than the shibas that i just do a little whenever i can and i think his quick gets longer and longer! oops!

okiron - funny thing - when i had foster cats, i never had any problem or need for this thing! they let me do it!
