Suggestions for a doggy den

edited May 2013 in General
Hi all! We've moved into a new house and on the first floor is an abnormally large closet in the hallway. It's about 5-6 feet on all four sides. Since we are going to be doing a lot of renovations I thought it might be nice to make that closet into a place where Miyuki could hang out and chill...a doggy den! My question is....

What would your dog's dream room be? I want to make it a place where she is comfortable and if it gets too loud when company over she can go in there to escape and be alone. I thought about taking the door off completely and replacing it with a baby gate. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Feel free to go crazy with your suggestions I'd love to hear them! Oh and the flooring will be very water resistant and pretty durable.

  • Doggie door!
  • Or maybe a dutch door.

  • @ayk ohh!! I like the dutch door. Much more aesthetically pleasing than a baby gate lol.
  • Put a really gigantic comfortable bed or blanket (whichever your dog prefers) to make it cozy
  • @maru - I like the idea of the dutch doors, but I was thinking, maybe instead of a solid bottom panel like in the photo, you could keep the supportive 'x' frame and use screening or iron bars instead of the triangular solid pieces. This way, Miyuki can see out and not feel quite so enclosed.

Also, you might want to look into a multi level flooring set up. This way, she can have a cool spot to lay (hardwood/linoleum/laminate) on the floor, and a softer bed higher up. (think bunkbed or college dorm loft style)
  • A closet in the hallway sounds like Harry Potter... If it's truly a 'den', she should be free to come & go - no doors. All of our dogs have wanted to be underfoot when company came. If they got bored or overwhelmed, they had doggy beds or hung out under tables just as they would without guests. But, they were always free to choose. Every dog's personality is different - some may want more solitude, so maybe this will work for Miyuki. Happy decorating !
  • My Shiba LOVES his wire crate with custom crate cover. A dog doesn't need much space for their den? Maybe look into a crate that's fully enclosed except for the door? There are plenty of stylish and decorative crate options for a den.

  • I love dutch doors, and really wanted on our front door, but they are super expensive.

Making the bottom of the door see through, like with a metal screen or something, is a good idea if you don't need a real solid barrier. Of course, my situation is quite different, but sometimes the point is having a solid barrier they CAN"T see through if the dogs are upset by the view of strangers, or as in my case, we need to avoid fights by dogs who will get worked up just seeing each other. (My point: sometimes solid barriers are exactly what we want!)

I like the idea of the multiple layers, so a dog can be down on the floor, but also get up higher to lay down and view. Maybe a carpeted platform?
