Rehoming adult dog

edited May 2013 in General
So my brother has planned to move away from where I live. And he has hint that he would like to take Nuuk with him. Nuuk and my brother has a really special relationship and Nuuk loves him very much. Sometimes it feels like Nuuk is more Miika's dog than mine... My brother has never bonded so closely to dog than he has with Nuuk. I'm willing to give Nuuk to my brother but I'm thinking how dog who has always lived with another dog would adapt to live on his own without another dog. Any experience?

  • I had a similar experience when I koved out and my brother wanted to keep Russell. I thought Russell would do poorly in an urban environment and he had bonded very well with my brother (likewise, my brother bonded with him). I worried, though, how he would do without a companion canine.

Russell is adapting to life withiut a doggie friend (though my brother does sometimes foster dogs). He whines a little more, I'm told, and seeks attention a little more than he used to. The first couple of weeks after I moved out, Russell went on a hunger strike, but everything seems back to normal now. I think it depends on the dog's personality and the willingness of the new owner to make up for what the dog has 'lost' in the transition.
  • Thanks for answer :). Nuuk seems to be really good adapter but I still have some doubts cause Nuuk has some separation anxiety.
  • Gojira has always had another dog, but seems to be doing just fantastic as a spoiled "only child" in her new home. I haven't been told that she seems to miss having canine companions at all.
