Shelby's progress

edited August 2013 in General
So, I decided to make my own thread about this and stop taking over Tjbart17's thread...

As many of you know, Shelby was having some serious issues regarding being afraid of everything on her walks. It had gotten to the point of her not even wanting to walk out the door. We tried everything else before making the decision to put her on a small daily dose of anxiety medication. Well, after a week, I am happy to announce that Ms. Shelby has made phenomenal progress! I no longer have to carry her out the door- she is actually excited to go on her walks and practically drags ME out the door. She still gets scared from time to time, but I am able to distract her before she gets frantic and she calms down so much quicker now. I still haven't gotten a doctor's appointment for myself, but am trying new stuff to help my anxiety (fleece blanket anyone?). Shelby and I take our meds at the same time and the little goober actually likes to swallow her pill!

I am working on helping her with what has scared her the most. The kids on the playground and swings really terrified her, so at night I am walking her around the swings and playground to get the smells from the kids. I even sat on a swing to show her that they aren't bad. It seems to be working. She didn't react at all to some kids swinging and making tons of racket earlier today!

I am so happy that she is doing better, even though we still have a long way to go. I don't want her to be on medicine for her entire life and we are working hard at teaching her that the world isn't as scary as she thought it was.

I want to give a special thank you to everyone who gave me advice and helped with this decision! I'll update on her progress occasionally and maybe figure out how to post a before and after video in a few weeks!! :)

  • Great news!! Give sister a big smooch for me <3
  • Hooray! This is good news! Just follow Shelby, she'll let you know how its going for her. Give her lots of time and listen to her when she's telling you 'quietly'- dont wait for her to have to be really obvious about how she feels. She'll love that you hear her. :) Very happy to hear things are going well. Slow and steady, listen to your girl. Good work!! <3
  • @wrylybrindle I watch her walking mostly. Her gait changes slightly and I just get her to sit and rub her ears until she gets up on her own. She has been doing fantastic with this so far!:)
@mdokic thanks! If I'm not mistaken, she gave huge smooches back!! :)
  • What medicine is she on? What is the name of the active ingredient and what are the potential long term side effects?
  • That's great news @Myabee09! I'm glad the meds helped take the edge off Shelby's anxiety. It's not likely she'll need to be on them forever, just until she builds up a bunch of positive associations with the things that scared her.

Keep up the good work and I'd love to see videos of before and after. I think we don't get enough videos on the forum when it comes to behavior. It's the next best thing to actually seeing it in person and is often hard to accurately describe in words.
  • @poeticdragon she is on 40 mg of clomicalm. I haven't seen any adverse reactions in her, and I'm looking for long term effects now but I can't find any other than liver damage associated with the combination of other meds. I'll keep digging... the active ingredient is clomiparine hydrochloride.
  • Great! Sounds like you have a great head about you regarding this matter. Shelby is a lucky puppy to have such a great owner. :)
  • Thank you!!! :)
  • Great news everyone! Shelby is not showing any signs of fear around the swings or playground. Even when kids are screaming and playing hard, she just goes about her business. When the kids aren't around, she will go on the playground and jump on the platforms. She even pushed me on the swings the other day! I am so proud of her!!!
  • Ya- Hey! Good work, you two!! :)
  • Yay! <3 Shelby!!! We knew you had it in you. Great job working with her @Myabee09! Your devotion and thoughtfulness is an example to us all.
  • So, I have realized I haven't updated this thread in a while... Shelby is doing really well with her anxiety. She is now off her meds and is doing spectacular! When she sees people, she just sits down and calmly waits for them to pass by. No more running away and pulling at her leash at all. Shelby has come to love her walks and gets so excited when she sees us pull her leash out! She also likes to people watch with Mya on our porch and when it's too cold she sits by the door and watches everyone through the window.

I'm so proud of my Shelby! She is such a sweet and loving girl!
  • Great to hear! Would love to see some happy dog pics to go with it :)
  • That's great news! It's great to see a success story where meds were used effectively to reduce the unbearable anxiety, then training to change the behavior and response and finally a well-adjusted dog that no longer needs the meds. You're such a great mama to Shelby, @Myabee09!!
  • Aww... Thanks! I'll post some updated pics of the big girl soon... :)
  • That's great! Congrats :)
