Ana and I went and tried some Kayaks today and we liked them. I however tipped mine over......fail lol. Have any of you guys taken your dogs out on the water with you?
my friend John kayaks with his dog Dargo. John glued rubber (I will ask him exactly what it is) to the top in several areas because while Dargo mostly sits in the boat with him, he sometimes goes out 'on deck' and often wants to take a swim, so the rubber gives Dargo something to claw onto so he can get back in the boat (or close enough and still enough that John can lift him out. He's a 23 lb dog) Dargo wears a life jacket just for visibility (he's black) and for the handle on the back so he can lifted very easily.
I don't know of any NK, but a friend of mines parents take their lab out on the water for about a mile swim at a time...with a life jacket so she doesn't get too tired, and it has a handle on the back so if she looks too tired they can easily pull her back on the kayak I really wanted to, but I'm not sure Kona likes water THAT much lol...maybe I'll try one day if you try let me know how it goes!!
Sosuke is an excellent boating pal. He loves boat rides! We haven't been in a kayak specifically, but he once saw some kayakers while we were at a lake and he got so excited by the sight of boats that he tried to swim after them.
We have been in our inflatable paddle raft, a motor boat, a peddle boat, and a canoe and he loves them all. He wears a webmaster harness so I can pick him up out of the water when he jumps in.
Awesome thanks guys/girls! Yeah Akuma is thirty pounds so finding one that he would have a shot at being comfortable in might be hard but we will see. I might have to get something other than a whitewater hybrid and go for something bigger?
You could get a sit-on-top/open top kayak. My grandpa had an inbetween model that was small but had hatches, and the top could be removed. It was a pretty spiffy little thing. If I got a kayak, I'd end up with a real nice long sea kayak with a rudder, preferably made out of carbon fiber. I am thinking of getting a canoe though, since I can fit dogs into it more easily than a kayak. Or maybe I'll get both...
