Skijoring / Mushing / Dryland Mushing

edited October 2013 in General
Do any of you do these activities with your NK ? I've been reading up on this stuff quite a bit lately, ordered Nare an Alpine Outfitters harness last night. Not too sure if he'd get the idea of it (he is husky, so maybe), I don't think he is much of a puller and probably prefers to smell the daisies instead of pulling me. But we won't know until we try!

  • When I lived in Alaska years ago, I ski-jored with my AA. It was pretty fun, but like many AAs she didn't have a lot of stamina...she'd run like crazy for a few minutes, then she'd be done! She seemed better pulling weight...which in my case was just a kid's plastic sled I used to haul my water from my driveway down the trail to my cabin. She was great with that.

I'm sure there are others who do it more regularly and can post, but it's super fun, anyway!
  • I have tried dryland mushing. Sosuke's a better fit because Rakka wants to kill investigate everything she sees and doesn't want to stay on course. She does well until that ground squirrel runs past, though, lol. My dogs are not honest pullers, though. I should work with them more on that, but they stop pulling as soon as I stop scooting behind them.

I haven't tried skijoring, though. I have not been cross-country skiing since I was... 12? I would really like to, though. I almost bought cross-country skis last year but opted for snowshoes instead.
  • I kind of tried skijoring with my Finnish Lapphund (not NK, but...) a couple times. It was fun, but she didn't really have the interest in running flat out to enjoy it (she was already older--and I made the mistake of trying it in an area where I usually practiced formal obedience with her, so she didn't think she was supposed to run out ahead like that).

I do kind of want to try it again with my next dog... it had the potential to be a ton of fun.
