Akuma's Poop....

edited October 2013 in General
Hey guys since Akuma was on antibiotics ( three weeks ago) he has had soft stools. We have tried pumpkin and firm up, sweet potato, giving him a little less food, white rice and not giving him any treats or anything extra to mess with his stomach. This week we started giving him plain organic yogurt with probiotics. Can you guys think of anything else to try to help get his gi tract back on track?

  • Probiotics (and prebiotics like ground roasted chicory root) help Conker with his digestive problems. Antibiotics sometimes cause issues like this. They tend to kill off the good intestinal bacteria and it might need a little help getting back up to speed.
I try to get good stuff, human-grade powder in capsules, preferably something with Lactobacillus acidophilus in it.
Give that a shot and see if it helps.
  • I know you aren't comfortable doing raw, but I have found giving a raw turkey neck really helps firm up stools due to the bone in it. Rice cakes may work as they are so dry, and you could even try some Metamucil. It sounds backwards I know, but it can help with soft or loose stools. I'm sorry his tummy is upset :(
  • there is a probiotic designed for dogs harder digestive system you can get from your vet. it is like $40 a box and there are ~20 doses inside. I keep them on hand so when someone is off toss one in their meal and they are good to go.
  • yogurt doesn't have enough probiotics to really do much.. i think i read that you'd have to feed 4oz or 6oz of yogurt everyday to get enough to really help dogs get back on track.

I have the forti flora packs for rainy days. made by purina but works better than other stuff I've tried. i think it might be what cdenney is referring to as well.
  • I had the same problem with my JA, and the vet recommended us to boild rice and chicken breast together with a lot of water, and make it something like a soup. It worked.
  • Fortiflora is the probiotic from the vet that we use. My brother's dog needs it regularly due to health issues. It's about 25-30 from my vet and has 30 or so packets.

Good luck with Akuma. :( Some antibiotics can be really harsh on me. I feel his pain.
  • I think it just takes time. Saigo was on anti-biotics and it took probably another 2-3 weeks after he got off the pills for his stools to even slightly firm up. We fed him pumpkin+rice+chicken more for ease of digestion than to firm it up.

Great suggestions guys, I love this forum! I will talk to my vet and see what they have on hand and see where that goes. Akuma has a pretty sensitive stomach to start so maybe something like that would help him out. He is otherwise really healthy and doing well. He drinks and eats well and no change in activity.
I'm thinking the stronger probiotics is the best bet now. I'm sure it's because of the antibotics that stripped his good bacteria that's causing it since before the antibotics we had a good food/supplement combo figured out that his stools were good and firm. We've done the more fiber, bone/ruffage and easier digestible food and it hasn't seemed to do much of anything to firm up the last couple weeks. I'm thinking @MapleTwinkie is right and he just needs some time to get back on track. We'll continue to do what we can to help. Thanks everyone!
  • What was Akuma on anti-biotics for?

Saigo was on anti-biotics because he had yellow discharge from his weewee area. Turns out a lot of puppies have this (Saigo was licking it non-stop though) so the vet put him on anti-biotics. He got better right away but his poops took time to firm up.
  • He decided it would be fun to get a large raccoon by the jugular. Akuma got some puncture wounds and scratches so the vet flushed the wounds and put him on 10-day antibiotics.
  • I didn't know about fortiflora. Will file that info. away for future reference. We had some of this going on in our house, but I think it was from methocarbomal in Toby's case. Even though he eats raw and was getting pumpkin it was still a problem. But I weaned him off the methocarbamal and it stopped.

And I gotta say, I smile every time I come to the forum and see the title of this thread. Esp. after some arguments in other threads, there is just something that makes me smile when a thread is called Akuma's poop. :P
  • @ shibamistress Glad to make your day. I didn't realize that there were other arguments about about poop in other threads I made a new one since I tried a few things I saw on other threads and it didn't work.
  • Ha! No the arguments are not about poop :) It's just that seeing something about poop sometimes feels more appealing! :)
  • I agree with @shibamistress that this thread makes me smile along with the former thread "ugh akuma gross!". Or perhaps I'm just entertained by Akuma's intestinal habits.
  • On Friday Akuma's poop started to get more solid and then we gave him fortaflora on Saturday and Sunday and today we got a nice solid steamy pile of poop. You know you're a good dog owner when you get excited about the consistency of your dog's poop. When Ana and I were like "YES That's the best poop I have seen in a while"! and Akuma looks at us like "come on guys give me some room" Thanks for the advice everyone!
  • I just wanted to point out that "Akuma's Poop" translates to "Devil's Poop"... which made me LOL
  • If I had to guess what the devil
smells like it would be like Akuma's poop for sure.
  • LOL..devil poop. :P Idk if it's the Orijen or what, but MAN when Kimber poops you would never be able to tell such a LARGE smelly thing came out of such a tiny cute thing...IT'S ENORMOUS. O_o
  • @mdokic yeah I know I feel the same way.
