you know locks of love? Where you donate your hair for wigs for those with cancer...? THIS IS WHAT WE CAN DO WITH HILO'S FUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Donate it to the xolo breed!
i'm totally bumping this very long thread. here is my list of five other breed's i'd like to own. (keep in mind, i don't know if i have it in me to get another dog that isn't a japanese akita. just seems weird. so i'll likely never own another breed other than an akita for a long time)
The most likely out of all of these is a Samoyed. They're social butterflies, they seem like they'd make great running/pulling partners, and I could take the pup to a bar every weekends. How badass would that be to drink good beer with a Samoyed? um. AWESOME! Otherwise, according to the boyfriend, all the other breeds are too big/hairy/rare. Mehhhh
@jellyfart, Wow, I've been fantasizing about this lately too. I made a list a few years ago, and it's funny to see how my desires have changed over the years. Not to mention some of the members on this very list! LOL.
So this is what I'm coming up with:
#1 by a long shot: Formosan Mountain Dog, not necessarily purebred, rescued from a Taiwanese shelter or the street, pref. brindle with giant pricked ears, glowing, evil eyes, and a sensitivity to human/owner cues as I've come to notice from my favorite Formosans #2 mid-sized sighthound like a Whippet or Silken Windhound (never thought I would find myself so fascinated with the latter, but I've met a few and they seem like an appropriately scaled down Saluki or Borzoi) #3: Ibizan Hound (I might have a breeder in mind if I ever go this route) #4 Rhodesian Ridgeback #5 rescue Greyhound, older
... of course, this is all assuming that I would also always have Shibas and Basenjis around.
I had a pretty different list three years ago... Would be very interested to know how other forum members' lists have changed, too.
@curlytails I actually know a woman who breeds badass Whippets. She breeds both (when she got married) American Akitas and Whippets, and both breeds are show champions and other fancy stuff that I'm not really sure of, but it is awesome. So if you ever take the jump to get a Whippet, I can introduce yall two, and to a few other people in the akita world who also have Akitas and Whippets. Weird combo, but they go good together i guess!
@jellyfart Oh, that is an interesting combo. I tend to think of whippets as a relatively delicate breed, at least in terms of how well they would mesh with Nihon ken -- mainly because I don't think my Bowdu would play nicely with them. So that dream would probably be delayed for some time to come... as with adding anymore dogs until I'm actually settled in a job, a region, and a home. Until I finish this damn degree, I continue to ponder and fantasize.
@curlytails ah, i feel ya on the degree part. I'm going back for another degree, and until i get out and get a real career going, i'm not gonna be able to add a third dog. (uhhh.... i guess i haven't even got the second, but that is in the works
Yeah, I've been having some massive degree regrets lately since I'm in a field that basically requires long research stints overseas, which is not so easy to do if one also wishes to amass a handful of hounds. *sigh*
I dug up my list from years ago, and kind of chuckle... My list consisted of 1. Formosan Mountain Dog 2. Basenji (check!) 3. Finnish Spitz (I learned that they're far too barky) 4. Norwegian Lundehund (I actually came upon one in rescue! But their small and rather restricted population kind of bothers me now) 5. Doberman Pinscher (?!?!?!)
We also flirted with the idea of a Wire Fox Terrier or Welsh Corgi when we were looking for an appropriate second dog that would fit with Bowdu's personality. We probably would have failed if we tried to bring either one of those home.
LoL, I've never made an entry on this list (though I think there's probably another similar thread floating out there.
1- Any of the Hauling Laika, I'm really loving my husky boy and would love to experienced a similar, less "refined" dog. Especially since many of them do share a common ancestor to Sibes.
2- Saluki, something about their slender physique and feathering really appeals to me
3- Nova Scotia Tolling Retriever, they seem to have a retriever personality with some of that independence I've grown to love in NK.
4- Basenji, mainly because they are similar to shibas
5-an Australian Shepherd, they're cool and it would be nice to see what it's like to work with an "easy" to train breed
Thai Ridgeback- I used to have a Doberman and liked the look. The Thai Rdigeback has a really tough personality and has the endurance of an ox to keep up with me when I go biking.
Canaan Dog- very smart and trainable. They're also working dogs that work close to their owner so off-leash training is a great benefit!
New Guinea Singing Dog- I think they would be an AWESOME companion when I want to do parkour in an urban environment or in nature... but I bet their singing gets annoying
Native American Indian Dog- great with families, children, other dogs, love the outdoors. Said to be Hypoallergenic too
Tamaskan- I considered getting a Tamaskan from Tarheel Kennel in NC but my email conversations and research really has me hesitant on the breed. John Bannow was extremely rude when conversing though him in email. It's also difficult to seek out a credible breeder based on all the information listed online.
This one is easy for me.... because I am not a dog person, I'm an Akita person. The only breed I really and truly want to own is the Japanese Akita. That said there are a few breeds I like to admire from afar:
1. African Wild Dog - Okay its not actually a dog, but my god, the color pattern and ears are irresistible. I'm never going to have any of these breeds anyway, so why not fantasize. 2. Cardigan Welsh Corgi - Unlike the other type of corgi, these guys come in merle and don't have their tails cut off. Merle is awesome. Corgis have gravitas. They were bred to be kicked by cows! 3. Australian Shepherd - Yep, another breed that comes in merle. It's kind of my thing. It's too bad about the tail though. I don't have the time or energy to keep up with an aussie. 4. Kooikerhondje - I'll be honest, I picked this breed because of its name. That said I actually like gun dogs as a group better than most. Chestnut and white can be really pretty, too. 5. Kuvasz - The only one on this list I ever seriously considered. Met a breeder of these dogs before I found and settled on the Akita. They're large and very intense but not too mastiff-like.
The breed that I really love and adore is the Shiba.
I love their size, their urajiro, their independence and not in your face temperament, yet they still are willing to work with me. Again, if I get another Shiba, it will be from a good breeder that has healthy, sound temperament and structure. Not all dogs are created equal, even of the same breed, so I will choose carefully.
I may also be interested in a Border Collie at some point, but it is something that I need to think more about and will not happen any time soon. I met a lot of Border Collies at Agility classes and trials and realize that not all of them are created equal, just like any other breeds. I like their hardiness, their athletic structure (if they are built properly) and their working nature. If I ever get a Border Collie, it will be from a reputable breeder with proven lineage of great body structure, sound temperament and working ethics.
Koji is not even 3 years old yet, so it will be a while before I bring in a 3rd dog. Time to stop day dreaming and focus on my current two.
I guess mine has shifted some now. 1) pit bull- rescue. Always will be my favorite dogs. My husband and I vowed there will always be a pit bull in our house. 2)French bulldog- those little buggers are ridiculous I wouldn't get one since their health is a mess. But we are fantasizing right? 3) English bulldog-see above 4) dogue de Bordeaux - still love those pups 5)every pound puppy that melts my heart. Which is all of them. Especially the broken ones. Give me the three legged, one eyed mess any day.
Yay, lists Left shiba and akita out of the list because I already have a shiba, and hopefully really soon I'll be blessed with an akita.
1. ALL the japanese breeds (minus the terrier and tosa) 2. Norwegian buhund (it is said that they bark a lot, but I really want to be part of the conservation of the breed) 3. Rottweiler 4. Basenji 5. Australian Kelpie
1. Akita (American or Japanese) (Yes, I have Akita's but they are my 'top breed choice') 2. Kai 3. A rescue dog.... any dog (purebred or mixed breed) that needs a family, nurturing, and love, etc. 4. Mudi 5. Shikoku 6. Fila Brasileiro (Brindle)
This is a 'wish list', right? LOL
Number 1: check, 2: in the future I will hopefully get one, 3: I have one now and I am sure I will always share my home with precious rescue pups
Numbers 4,5,6..... Not going to happen but I couldn't leave them off the list!
(I know it was supposed to be 5.... but I had to list all 6!)
My favorites and wants-to-owns change like the seasons. There are so many dogs that appeal to me and my lifestyle and so little time. I guess, I'd really want...
1) Kishu! (We're working on that one!) 2) Qimmiq/Canadian Eskimo Dog (seems very similar to the Malamute, but a little less "refined") 3) Welsh Terrier (These guys! UGH. Love these guys! So much character in such a tiny, built dog.) 4) Mudi (I was surprised to see this one in anyone else's list! I went through a period before I got my second dog where I was looking into rescuing a Mudi - but they're such an uncommon breed.) 5) Alabai (I really like the look and the intensity of these dogs - but they're probably not the right fit for my household.)
My favorites are always changing as well but there are a few that have stood out for a while. 1) Hokkaido Inu Totally sold on these now and will bringing one (or two) to Canada next year. A very close number 2 is the Shikoku, I love the look of those dogs. 3) Native American Indian Dog, don't know much about them but they look super cool. 4) Canadian Eskimo dog, yes I am moving North. 5) A big Newfoundland for my lazy side.

Just a thought.

They climb trees though! I love it! They also can do the creepy exorcist head spin thing
I obviously have a soft spot for overly fuzzy spitz breeds.
1. Akita (American or Japanese) (Yes, I have Akita's but they are my 'top breed choice')
2. Kai

Here's cool picture of one I think they're supposed to be like the ones Indians had I dunno, but the look of the dogs are neat.
