  • Congrats! Puppies are adorable. Does all puppies have normal coat?
  • Hi Mirka. Yes, they all seems to have normal, short lovely coat.
  • Congrats! :)
  • That's good to know :).
  • Nice! Congrats on the pups!

    Congratulations!!!

Do you have long haired kais? Just wondering from Mirka's question if I was understanding that correctly.
  • Congrats on your pups!
  • Thanks...
No, I don't have long haired Kais....
But some say, that the male (Otto) I used to mate with Mokii, had a long haired brother. The owner of Otto can't confirm this, and I can't get in contact with the breeder of Otto, in France. Haven't heard of any longhaired Kais, in the American parents of Otto.
  • Egh no big deal. :-)

Just out of curiosity, who are Otto's parents? I have a Kai, and am in the US. It's always interesting to see if our Kais are related in anyway.
  • Otto's parents are Classy's Kokusai-Teki Hoshi and Classy Daiichi Odori No Inochi. I have heard of longhaired Kais, but never seen one, don't know if any of you have?
  • I remember a long haired Kai named Kuma that lived in Florida. I think he would be 10 by now. He was a Classy dog, but I do not know his pedigree at all.

The only other long-haired pup I have seen pics of was on the yahoo group. I believe his name was Kuro. He was from the breeder in France.
  • Congrats - you must be so PROUD of your little bear cub babies!!!
  • Congratulations glad the pups are all healthy and stuff. =)

I love the pictures so cute!

Congrats! The pups look like they have nice heads! Very cute, and very cool!

ETA - @Tina - Is "Cody" a KKA import? If so, and you have a translated pedigree, I'd love to enter him in the Kai DB I am building! :o)

    ----
  • I have never seen one, they must look funny.
What we really fel in love with, was that Otto is so loving and friendly to all people, kids and also strangers. He's such a wonderful Kai.
Don't know about the coat, think some genetic disorders can be hidden in any breed, after several generations you can have a white, brown or long haired Kai. That's not what we wish for, but it's difficult to predict.
In breeding of German shepherds, long haired pups keep coming once in a while, no matter what they do.
Right now, we are just so happy and proud of our pups, and maybe some day, our wonderful japanese boy, Cody, will be the father of another litter.
Think, that one of the girls have to stay..
  • Once again, long haired Kais are not a big deal. Your pups are beautiful!!!
  • Thanks again.
Brad, I have a translated pedigree on Cody, but he's a JKC import, it's the only dpedigrees accepted by FCI. As from the US, they only accept AKC pedigrees, not from UKC.

@Tara: My friend in France owns Otto's sibling and he is long haired and there was also female in this litter who was long haired (I have seen pics of her but haven't find the owner). The breeder don't breed Kais anymore and she really is hard to find.

Long haired Kais are really cute (as fawn Schipperkes) so if someday there will be long haired in my breeding it stays in my family :D. There is much severe problems in breeding than long haired genes :).
  • @Tina - Oh, wait... DUH! I met Cody at Shigeru's place when I was there. LOL ... I'm so slow. He was a cute pup.

JKC pedigrees work too, but I'm not in as much as a rush for them. So once the app is complete you will be bale to enter him in the DB. :o)

  • Wish I hawe seen a longhaired, it's hard to imagine how they look.

And Mirka, couldn't agree more, particularly in our part of the world. I think it's so important, that this wonderful breed, gets a really good start.

At the show in Norway, I talked to a couple of the judges. First one, asked very carefully, if she could touch my dogs. I may have looked funny, because I was so surprised, and told her, yes of course she could touch my dogs.
Another judge looked at me standing with my dogs outside the ring. I knew him, so I said hello. Haven't seen him for a couple of years, And he didn't know I had Kais now. He told me, that he had been judging Kais once before, don't know if it was in Norway or Finland. There were 7 Kais at the show, he was shocked, only one of the dogs, allowed him to touch it, the other 6, would either eat him or back down intensely. Thats a problem I think, we shoul take wery seriously in our future breeding, and that's one of the reasons why, we mated Mokii with Otto.

In our part of the world the Kais have a bad reputation among judges, don't know why, but it's sad, and I think, we must try to change this.
  • @Tina - "In our part of the world the Kais have a bad reputation among judges, don't know why, but it's sad, and I think, we must try to change this." I'm not advocating for or against changing the Kai temperament; but from the sounds of it the Kai in Europe have a typically Japanese temperament. All of the nihon ken are selected for a certain "wildness" that may not lend itself to handling by judges. Whether or not you believe it is a good trait is up to you. You have to set your own goals for your breeding program. But, strictly speaking, it's not a "fault".
  • Yes for sure, I don't wanna change the wildness in the breed, or the temperament, and know it's not a fault. Our dogs don't always love everybody, and if they are off leach, they just ignore people they don't like, and likewise at home.
But I think, if I'm on a show, my dogs trust me, and lets people handle them. I can sometimes clearly see, they don't like a person. They don't seek contact, don't wag their tail, look direkly at me, but accept to be touched by a stranger.
We don't like all other people, and naturally our dogs don't too. But I think it's ok for the dog to show it, but not to bite.
  • @Tina I posted this on your wall. Here's the long haired Kai in France http://www.flickr.com/photos/35801767@N02/
  • holy crap! long haired kai! Looks cute and so unique lol.
  • @tjbart. Thanks for the link. He's so cute, thinks he looks a little like a black chow.

Wow, Kuro is gorgoeus! If I didn't hate to maintain the long fur I'd love to have a longhaired kai too...

Anyways, huge congrats, AGAIN, Tina, and I can't wait to meet the little blobs :D
and I know what you mean about the kais not wanting to be touched by everyone. When I meet Mokii I always feel like I'm groveling for her attention. She is never unkind or anything, and she doesn't seem to dislike me, though I'm not really sure she likes me either. More kind of tolerates me... LOL! Except when I have treats ;P
  • @Brego_mellon_nin Then there's Koda who will happily let 95% of the people he meets to give him a good butt rub. He's happy to also let people pat his head, even though I know he's not into it.
  • @Brego_mellon_nin Yes Tanja that's exactly what I mean. You can't, and should not, force your dogs to love everybody, but I don't think it's OK for them not to behave just a little among people. Particularly now, when we have some breeds prohibited in DK and unfortunately more on the observation list to come. Don't want the Kai to be on this list.
  • @tjbart17
Well I'm glad some kais are more approachable. But mated with Otto, I can only imagine that it will improve Mokii's pups :)

    @Tina
I agree with you, I want my dog to be civil around people. I don't need it to be un-kai-ish, but just well socialized... And yes we really need to make sure the kai does NOT make it on the list!!!
