Hiro - looking for a new home

edited February 2013 in Kai Ken (甲斐犬)
I have made a difficult decision to re-home Hiro. While he is a wonderful dog and I love him dearly, he is not what I am aiming for in my breeding and preservation program. With that Hiro is currently looking for his perfect home. He gets along great with female dogs, and quiet male neutered dogs. He does not get along with other intact males. Hiro is on the small side for a male kai, as he is the same size as Kuma the shiba. Hiro is a very active dog and would be best with an active family. He loves to go running and biking. He has the other typical kai traits, shy around strangers at first. I am looking for his perfect home and there is no hurry for him to leave. I just feel a new home is what is best for him.

  • Hope he finds a great home!
  • He's handsome! Hope he finds his perfect home!
  • Argh! I really want to come get him! But Bella would eat me. And then probably Hiro. :-/

I am sure that you will find him a wonderful home... Perhaps with @cdenney?! :-P
  • lol @ sunyata, I've already pm'd Stacy last night, if it all works out I wouldn't be able to take him for awhile and I know Stacy wants the best for him and that might be a rehoming faster than I would be able to take him. That being said if he isn't rehomed or in the process of joining an awesome new family before mid-March I am going to drive up and meet him hopefully. We'll see, I will let Sachi choose her life partner in the end.
  • How old is Hiro? What kind of training does he have?

What kind of home would you say is perfect for him? A couple with an active lifestyle and a female dog?
  • Hiro is 1.5 years old. He has not had much obedience training. All of his training has actually been show training. He has been a wonderful dog to show, and was a UKC champion at 6 months of age. He needs a family that is fairly active. A home with no dogs, female dogs, or a quiet neutered male.
  • He sounds like he would almost be the right fit for us (we have a great state park system and B loves hiking with the pups). Vi loves other active dogs too and is an avid hiker with endless stamina. Alas, while Bear is a sweet, quiet, mellow boy, he is also unaltered and will remain so for an indeterminate amount of time.

Good luck! There are lots of kai lovers so I'm sure you'll find a great home for him.
  • @sjp051993 Maybe teaching him some of the basics (sit, down, leave it, drop it, wait) while you wait can help re-home him faster. I know they made ChoCho's rehoming process A LOT easier. I don't know how I would've survive at first without her knowing "sit" and "leave it." It was really helpful.

@cdenney You should definitely meet him and see how him and Sachi get along! :)

I should re-phrase that. He does know several basic commands. Sit, come, leave it, wait, up (to jump up on the grooming table) stand, off, settle, quiet, and kennel. He will go to his kennel and stay there even if it is left open.
  • @sjp051993 Great! That should help his new owners a ton :)
  • Here are a couple of updated pics.

  • I would love to add another Kai to my home. If I can get kaiya's health settled it'd be something to consider. She may do better with a pup though.
  • He would do very well at agility and probably even obedience. He is highly food motivated and a quick learner.
  • Had a couple request for some videos of Hiro. Took a couple today.

If you happen to hear a shiba scream in any of them, that is Kuma. Tora is in season so he is very upset he cannot be near her. That is also why Tora is absent from the videos with Hiro as well. He is playing with Kazue.
  • If I actually knew what was going to be happening in my life in the next year or so... I would be writing an inquiry LOL

As I would love to get back into agility (and other assorted training) and so on SO much, and... by the looks of it I'll be dogless very soon ( :( ).

    He's a gorgeous boy.
  • Hiro had a visitor today. He was a butt and barked and refused to be petted. I think they do it just to prove me wrong. He was in love with Sachi though.
  • He probably did it so he wouldn't have to leave you :)
  • Oh, @cdenney visited you. Glad he liked Sachi. :)
  • Lol yeah, Sachi wanted to play and he wanted to get frisky so she put him down and appeared to not care about him but I know better I think she secretly liked him as she was all more relaxed and contented in the car after, happy to have made a connection so we will see...

Hiro is a cute little man and obviously wants to be big boy on the block so his napoleonism is entertaining.
  • Sometimes it's hard in the home. Koda is the nicest dog but if someone comes to the house and doesn't get him according to his specific rules he's an ass.
  • @cdenney--I hope it works out! The thing with these dogs, somehow, u can't just have one :)
  • Sounds cool! I hope it works out too!

And so true....you can't have just one! We already want another Kai, but you know, with four dogs, I don't think that will actually happen anytime soon!
  • I have two and they adore each other!! I think Kai's should come in pairs. :-)
  • Hiro and Kazue playing outside

  • lol kazue had a pretty amazing jump at 245 mark
  • Lol, yeah she is pretty agile
  • Kazue can actually clear the fence if she really wants out. She respects the fence because she knows those are the rules. Tora is the same way.
  • Good luck finding a home for him, he seems like a really playful guy from the videos :)
  • He loves to play and loves to cuddle. Just can't live with other intact males
  • Where are you located? I'm in So Cal
