No, it wasn't tanuki, definitely raccoon. I've seen a few tanuki (in Nara, actually) and way too many raccoon to know the difference!

I've never appreciated pet stores in Japan. There's a "Home Depot" type store in my wife's hometown of Tsuchiura that had the following animals in small cages for sale the last time I was there: puppies, kittens; a full grown golden retri…

A wolf hybrid was found roaming in Brooklyn yesterday. Not sure why anyone would want to keep one of these in NYC. When I lived in N. CA. folks kept them, but I can't see that working out in NYC! http://www.ny1.com/content/153022/east-new-york-s-wo…

There were many coyotes sightings in my neighborhood in the Bronx and in lower Westchester Co. (little girl and small dog attacked) in 2009 & 2010. Not so many sightings this year, though.

You can access NYS hunting laws and regulations through the DEC website: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/hunting.html

I played the dog bark audio links for my 8 month old this evening. He smiled and laughed at the friendly bark and paid no attention whatsoever to the aggressive bark. Well, he's got some time to figure it out before we get a dog!

Congratulations! I hope Kaede and those adorable pups are all doing well!

Congratulations!!! I hope Koyuki & pups are doing well!

@shishiinu: off topic, but how often do you hunt with your pack? Do the dogs get "itchy" if they haven't been out at some point and tracked a hog?

Those packs are designed by Dana Gleason, one of the best backpack makers around. I've been using one of his Dana Design Terraplanes for winter camping for 15 years now. No pack works quite as well with heavy loads as his, IMHO.

You can hunt boar in NYS with dogs as they're not classified as "large game" and there is no limited season for them. NYS wants them eradicated. I posted the DEC regs on this issue a while back.

Poor guy! Thanks for posting, he was handsome.

A unicorn, really? Not tanuki?

Cool!

I just checked our your blog, very cool! I know next to nothing about Hokkaido-ken, but hope to learn more!

Darn, the timing is just exactly wrong for us to bring a dog into our home. I hope that she finds a good home!

LOL.

Thanks, for all the new responses. Unfortunately, the firearm option really isn't available to me here in the Bronx! Now a wrist-rocket slingshot might work. I've often seen black bear in upstate NY on hikes, but I've never heard of cougar here. …

Thanks for your responses! @ Gen: thanks for the suggestion to check out the California Fish & Game site. There is plenty of food up here for coyotes: rats; cats; small dogs; raccoons; oppossum; squirrels; garbage cans. @ Shibamistress: I ch…
