I don't think the cost of the rarer breeds are high. I mean, what is it, around 2-3k? That's not bad at all, even if the pups are 4k or 5k. After all, you are guaranteed a pup who was responsibly breed, with great personality. Unlike some kennels where they charge your around a grand for a pup & the pup's parents probably weren't even tested!
I love all the nihon ken, but I prefer them in this order: Shikoku, Kai, Shiba, Akita, Hokkaido, Kishu
edit//those few sentences have the worst grammar ever & I sound like an idiot. omg.~
I hope that when you do get one of these rare Nikon-ken they don't come to you via the rescue system - that would break my heart. There are already a few Kai rescues out there, its so sad.
That's horrible Makes me depressed just thinking about it. Since there are so few Kai I thought the breeders were a little more strict on where their puppies were going. It's really tragic huh?~
Unfortunately, with Kai, there are some irresponsible breeders breeding them. Most of the time tho the dogs labeled "Kai Ken" in rescue are chow mixes.
There are more Kai-Ken in the states than in Japan.
That just makes me so mad. You'd think that people would take the CREATING OF LIFE seriously. Ye God. But then again human beings don't treat themselves fairly so I should expect them to not care where dogs go either
I guess I should just be thankful that there are actually breeders out there that do care, even if they are few & in-between.~
its true, a lot of the 'kai ken' on petfinder are mixes of some sort, but in the last 4 years there were only 2 that I was convinced were kais, especially one female that looked JUST like josephine! so sad.... but she found a great home in new hampshire.
I wanted to say too that I personally am waiting for ownership of some of the larger, rarer nihon ken because a. i don't think i have the time right now b. i don't think i could devote to it right now c. i'm not sure I could do it justice by "c" I mean that everyone that adopts (buys from reputable breeder) should be out there to protect the breed, not promote the breed. The dog should be a companion pet and ambassador to the breed (trained, titled), it should be used as conservation education regarding the breed, if not on a strict and integrity driven breeding program, be speutered, etc. I think if these standards were held of the OWNER of the dog by the BREEDER, hopefully no nihon ken would be in rescue or harms way.

There was even a supposed kishu on petfinder!
But I hope to God that I do not run into the rarer nihon ken in rescue. It would be a real tragedy.
