Loki - Spam 3/23

edited March 2009 in Other Breeds
We just got back from meeting Chewbaca the 3.5 year old Akita (Mix). Everything went REALLY well, so now we're taking the other children to go meet him. I'm just hoping they all get along, he's SUCH a sweetheart. (I got lots of kisses :o)

I'll keep you all updated!

    Evan,
I don't think anyone has asked for this before, so I'd really like to see some photos of Chewbacca.

    Is this him?

    If so, he's very cute

(It's funny, just a few days ago the list of adoptable dogs only consisted of about 10 breeds)

    That's him Beth!

Well... the meet went 'ok' .

Kieko was first to go in and meet him since she's REALLY great with other dogs and people. They sniffed a little bit, she licked his mouth, he peed and then she came to lay on my feet while he explored the room. Not exactly what we were hoping for, but not bad either. I think Keiko was overwhelmed with the sounds and smells of the place, and Chewy was just doing exactly what he had done in the meet with us (I got kisses again this time too). They spent a good while both off leash while we just talked about the things we'd need to know if we did adopt.

As soon as he and Belle met (on leash) he tried to snip at the back of her neck. The meeting specialist quickly corrected him and he was pretty good with her after that. They didn't spend any off-leash time together. This was one of our biggest fears with a basically 'wild' Akita mix and having a Mini-Doxie the size of most cats. He certainly shows high prey drive when Belle is around, but as long as he's corrected he might be ok. The word 'might' makes me really nervous...

We took a short break and let all of the dogs chill for a bit, then went back in to have all three meet each other. This time he snipped at Belle, got corrected and then immediately did it again *sigh* After the second correction he just left her alone. He was SUPER excited when Keiko came back in to see him, like he recognized his Shiba buddy. It was cute and Keiko played with him a bit and she was allowed off leash while the other two stayed attached.

I'm just a bit worried about him viewing Belle as prey. Tomorrow morning we're going to go back with Belle to see the program director and show her the behavior he's displaying.

I'm a jumbled up mess of emotion right now! I honestly don't know how the volunteers do it, but THANK YOU! Just two trips there and seeing those poor babies left me emotionally drained.

If things don't work out I KNOW he'll find a good forever home, he's such a giant sweetheart and it doesn't hurt that's he's gorgeous - and he'll be even more handsome when he gets to the correct weight and some of the fur on his neck from years of being chained up grows back.

So... tonight we'll talk, and think... and I'm having a beer for damn sure!

(I didn't think to take pictures this time either... kind of a high stress situation, hopefully I'll remember in the morning!)

Oh and we found out that any of the dogs that were deemed 'Akita' or 'Shiba' were sent to the appropriate rescue group, they didn't keep any they thought were pure-ish.

Wow...I totally get what your saying. I have an incredibly hard time going to the shelters...it's soooo draining, I don't know how the volunteers do it on a daily basis!

I hope it works out for you guys and certainly for Chewbaca! Should this not be your placement, I know in my heart you'll find the right pup for your home! Have you also contacted the rescue groups just in case??

Take care and enjoy that beer, you've earned it! :)

Yeah, that would make me nervous too...I'm more comfortable with cats and large dogs then small dogs and large dogs. Though some of those little doggies CAN put up with it and tell the bigger dogs off. How did Belle react to the nip?

Hmmm...it is a tough situation, I hope it'll work out but definitely one has got to be realistic about it. Belle's well-being is way more important. If it does work out, I'm thinking heavy supervision and never leaving those two alone unsupervised. <--- Since you're adopting him at an older age, I think if he were a puppy to grow up with Belle I would be less concerned. The nipping on the neck a few times has me worried though.

That's what I'm thinking too Corina...

We'll decide tomorrow when we meet him again, maybe he'll remember Belle and react differently (though that still wouldn't convince me that it would be totally safe).

If Chewy doesn't come to live with us we've decided we are at a point to take in another dog. He is the first we met, and maybe he's not the right one.

BTW - James told me while I was out of the room he and the volunteer talked about how Chewy had about 6 different meets just today - and today was the first day he was available for adoption (we just happened to be the first and placed a hold on him).
  • edited November -1
Oh man that's tough. Well it is a good consolation to know that he'll probably find a home fairly easy if he doesn't go home with you.

Evan, that is awesome. Sorry the meet didn't go great, but you have the right attitude!

Chewy will probably get adopted fast - he's gorgeous! And there are probably a bunch more dogs from this effort that you can interview, right? And there are regional rescue groups... You guys have a LOT to offer a dog! Keiko and Belle and future dog#3 are lucky pups!

Well... we came home with a 7 month old lab/blue heeler mix...

Things just weren't working out as well as we had hoped with Chewbaca, so we decided to stroll through the kennels and came across 'Nugent' - clearly he stole our hearts!!!

I will post a few pictures once I get my camera out, he's still adjusting to the new smells of home, the other monsters are in a separate are for the time being, although he's met them and loved them both! He was living with a chihuahua so that helps with the mini-dachshund issue.

He's said to be potty trained, and he kinda knows sit :o) He's also very very affectionate (so far he thinks he's a 40lb lap dog lol)

Here are a few pictures of him ... he's kind of a whirlwind of motion right, now so they aren't the greatest!!!

Rest assured he is not going to keep the name Nugent, although I have no idea what we're going to name him yet... :o)

He and Keiko are tearin' up the joint as I type lol

The BEST BEST BEST part was just proven true - he IS potty trained!

CUTE! How big is he now? How big do you think he will get? He looks so HAPPY with his new family!
  • edited March 2009
He's 41lbs now, we don't think he'll get too much bigger than 60lbs total. Everyone seems to be really adjusting well... Keiko has a fun high energy friend and Belle has someone to deal with Keiko lol :o)

He's still in that 'follow' stage where he wants to be near me and everywhere I go... very cute.
