We have a house guest........(pics & video)

edited June 2009 in Other Breeds
And we've named him Squirt. Yesterday while I was at work my husband sent me a text saying that when I come home from lunch I'd be surprised. So of course I hurry home. Once I get there I see a TINY JRT. He's probably about 8-10 weeks old we think????

My husband then tells me how he ended up in OUR house. While my hubby was out in the side yard working, he sees a pick up truck slow down in front of our house. The truck's door opens and my hubby hears something kinda whine. The truck pulls off. My hubby goes to look and there is squirt wondering around on the side of the street. *Insert SEVERAL choice words here*........ >:{

The hubby picks him up and brings him in. Luckily the pup didnt seem hurt at all. Hubby called the animal shelter and tells them what happened. Since he didnt have any info on the truck there wasnt much they could do. They asked if he wanted to surrender the dog. He said he'd hold on to him, but if anyone calls looking for it to call our house.

He told me that the intro of Honey and Squirt went well. Honey seemed to just understand that he was a baby and she needed to take it easy on him. Once Squirt checked out the house he and Honey played well together. The only problem that we have noticed is that Squirt is a bit possessive of the Pig ear's. But that might just be because he wasn't being feed very well, and the pig ear is SOOOO tastey. Honey didnt mind at all that he went to her food bowl. She was just too busy sniffing his rear. lol

He's a cute little guy........and he's already starting to grow on me. We told the kids that we are just "dog sitting" right now. I dont want them to get attached if someone were to call looking for him. If no one does.......we'll see what happens. lol (But I think he's already claimed us as family, so I dont really see him going anywhere.)

We were so excited to meet the Shiba that was in Youngstown Ohio (Fugi) But by the time I was able to get a day off work.......he had already been adopted. (which is wonderful. Just glad he got a good home.) When we found out Fugi was gone, we figured.....ok. It just wasnt meant to be for us to have a second dog. We can handle that. Then here comes Squirt.

I'm trying my best to not get super attached to him. But it isnt easy! If someone calls for him it would be pretty sad around our house, but we'd be happy he was going back to his family.

I haven't had a chance to take any pics. Maybe on my lunch hour today? If not this evening!

I guess we'll see how all this turns out!

    Oh my! Poor little Squirt!
He sounds like a cutie! And so young..
I wonder if he's even had any shots yet? How horrible for someone to just dump him!

I'm glad he and Honey get along, and that Honey is willing to share her home with him! He's so young that I don't think toy/treat possession will lead to anything serious, but just be careful of that! Maybe do it separately for a while until they adjust to their new arrangement.

Enjoy your house guest! I bet your kids REALLY do!!!

And I'm glad Fugi got adopted!! I figured he'd get out of there safely one way or another.

Can't wait for spam of the little Squirt!

Speaking of shots.........Honey is up to date......but what do I do about Squirt? We have no way of knowing if he's had ANY?? Can a dog be vaccinated twice? Is HE at risk being around Honey even though SHE'S up to date?

I think a vet could possibly preform a titer test on Squirt to see if he has had shots. Most likely they would just start the vaccinations over again.

However if someone is willing to take a puppy and just drop it on the road, out the door of a truck, most likely it is not UTD on shots, and no one is going to come look for it.

Pig ears are something that a lot of dogs get possesive of, Nemo cannot have them because he goes after the cats too much when he has been given one in the past.

Wow. People amaze me. Thank goodness Squirt was left in the yard of animal lovers and such a great family. I shudder to think what would happen if your husband wasn't there in the yard.

I can't wait to see pictures of the little guy. The good news is a JRT would definitely wear Honey out, exercise-wise!

I don't want to get your hopes up, but it sounds like Squirt was abandoned. I found two pups when I was 8 or 9. Same thing, a truck slowed down going up the mountain to my grandma's farm and out popped a White Lab and a GSD. Both were about 8 months old. They followed me and the horse home. Grandma was not too thrilled...lol But no one came to claim them.

OK time to take pics of this little Squirt and send them our way! By the way Squirt is my favorite soda...mmmmm mmmmm

If he's 8-10 weeks old, then he needs shots regardless of whether he's had them before or not, because he'd still need boosters.

I can't believe people! It's situations like that that I wish I could shoot lazers out of my eyes or something. I'd zap them good.

Oh, poor guy! Good thing your man was there to keep him out of the street. He can be vaccinated twice, but somehow I doubt he was provided with much. Why dump a cute little guy on the road? Why not call a rescue, or friend...arrgh! You can take him to the vet and get him wormed and shots and deflea-ed in the meantime so Honey doesn't get something.

Can't wait to see squirt. So glad he was not injured in the toss out. You might want to post some ads just in case squirt was a case of accidental heisting in a car theft or robbery. One never knows, sometimes strange things cause a dog to end up where it is. In this case it was good he ended up with you! : )

Yeah, gets him some vaccs. and watch him around high value treats. Starvation does not necessarily cause food possession.

Oh wow. That is just ridiculous. But I am glad that little Squirt was dropped off where he was. And I am glad that him and Honey get along.

Now... Where is the spam??? ;-)

Sounds like what happened to my Mom's chihuahua (thrown out of a truck and found on the roadside). Situations like that just piss me off, people being too lazy to find the pups a new home or even drop the dog off at a vet or shelter.

Either way, I hope the best for little Squirt. As far as vaccination goes, most of the times a vet would start the run from the beginning, making assumptions that the pup hasn't bee vaccinated at all. If anything, just bring him in for a check up and ask your vet the best course of action. Also, until Squirt finishes his shot run (if you are keeping him that long) try to limit both dogs from dog encounters and dog parks. Honey may be able to bring home any 'germs' that can get Squirt sick.

Well, good luck and can't wait to see some Spam.

He looks like around 4 months maybe 5, but hard to say without looking at the teeth. Your vet can guesstimate it better probably.
He certainly is very cute! How anyone could get rid of him I just don't know. Certainly check around to see if someone is missing their dog.

Almost forgot to mention...have him checked for a microchip, just in case. You never know.

DIDNT THINK OF THAT snf!!!!!! We'll take him as soon as I get home from work!!!!

Kristin....yeah. Honey IS in love. I've never seen her act like this! lol She's sharing her toys......She'll take her favorite toy (bobo) over to squirt and drop it in front of him. She play bows hoping to get him to chase her. And when he DOES chase her......omg......lol. I'll try to get some video of it! hahahah

OMG too cute! I hope he gets to stay. He's a sign definitely that you need two dogs. ; )

He is a-freaking-dorable!!! Wow, at least we know that if no one is looking for him, things will still work out!

    He is adorable! :)

Super cute! Squirt is such a fitting name.
  • edited November -1
LOL We didn't know what to call the little guy. And in the same fashion as naming honey....it just sort of happened. With Honey we were gonna call her "yoshi" but it didnt fit. So while we were thinking of names I would just say...."come here sweety, come here honey." and Honey just FIT! With this little guy we thought about Pee Wee.....But the kids didnt like it. So as he was hoppin around the house.....I said...." Come here you little Squirt." And there ya have it! lol
