Thanx all! We are so happy she is better too, it really hurt to see her in that kind of pain.
Are you going to try and keep her off the top of the couch? >> Yes, tho we have not come up with a plan yet. We may gate her in the office when we are not out there. She can be on the couch with us but not alone... she will hate that tho as the couch is her "place". \
Well, it happened again today, Kaia's hip dislocated.
This was our concern (and the vets concern), that her hip wouldn't be bale to stay in the socket after luxating. She made it a month with no issues, but today her hip came out of socket again. She wasn't doing anything, she was just in the "Shiba Area" with Maui - their normal morning outdoor time - and it just fell out of socket. She was sitting at the gate, not moving when it happened!
This time around there is no point in trying to get it back in socket, she just needs to go to surgery. Unfortunately, due to the holiday and all, the soonest appointment was Thursday of next week - and that's tentative pending the specialist being able to fit us in.
So poor Kaia has to sit here drugged until Thursday. I'm so disappointed this happened again, I really don't want her to have to have surgery. (
You know, Kaia is only 7 years old! All these issues in such a young little Shiba. I hate this for her. (
For Kaia, given her back issues and her LP, the vet is recommending FHO since she will need to be kept less active for the rest of her life anyway. But, we are waiting to talk to the specialist to see what he recommends.
That's sad news but at least she's getting the care she needs. A FHO - are they replacing the head and socket with a metal ball and socket? Or is that another one?
Wow, I'm so sorry you're going through this! Poor Kaia. What's the prognosis on this? Is her quality of life going to be reduced? Is her life expectancy going to be shortened?
Oh no! Poor Kaia, Brad and Jen... I am so sorry to hear this.
Femoral Head Orthectomy means they take off the ball completely. The hip joint then becomes more like a shoulder- there's no ball in your shoulder-and from what I understand the muscles can hold the hip all together and after healing it doesnt hurt anymore because there's no bone rubbing, popping or clunking anymore... I am sure there is more to it, and when Brad wakes up he'll explain it better.
What's the prognosis on this? Is her quality of life going to be reduced? Is her life expectancy going to be shortened? >> Um, I think even the FHO will improve her quality of life, I mean right now she is in loads of pain and when her hip is seated in place she still has some issues and slight pain. So, any surgical option that reduces her hip strangeness will improve her quality of life. As for her a shortened life expectancy, I have not been made aware of this situation shortening her life at all.
Chrystal's description of FHO is what I know as well, I will know more once we meet with the specialist in person.
