Name thread

edited November 2012 in General
I made thread on shiba forum and it's neat seeing why people named their dogs this name and where they got it from etc..

Saya was named after Saya from the movie Blood the last vampire.

Since owning Saya I learned it has meanings too.

Like the scabbard for a katana is referred to as a saya. Which is cool since I'm into swords like katana. :)

Bella is named is short for Isabella and Mom chose it because she loved the name she didn't know the girl on twilight had same name..

I'm hoping getting a second dog someday not sure what breed he'd be, but I'm thinking of naming Vash, Giri, and maybe Rougarou(Garou for short).

I'm thinking of other Cajun names too since I was born in Louisiana and thought it'd be cool to name my dog after Cajun or creole name.

Next breed on my list is either Hokkaido, kishu, kai ken, laika not in particular order in want. Rougarou would work for the four breeds. hehe

  • Vash as in...Vash the Stampede? I love that!
  • This will help! I'm always torn trying to think of names.

Eevee is from Pokemon. .. it's also the name of Natalie Portman's character in V for vendetta.

Sasuke was from Ninja Warrior and Naruto.

Ninja is an American Akita and has the black mask.

Sushi is just delicious. We went to petco after we got him and had to take register him for adoption coupons. We had to think of a name on the spot and found a toy sushi on clearance that we bought.

I'm not sure what my next dog will be named. It's tough. Something geeky like Wi-Fi, Linux, pixel, or Pavlov. Either that or from an anime like ryo-ohki, or zeke.
  • Bea is short for Beatrice...her old kennel named her bewitching...and we could not call her that.

    Kaiju...monster

    Kilbun...boy dog in moroccan

London was originally named "Toboe" when I first met him (likely because of what a "whiner" he was). After that, I'd named him "Jack" but we started calling him "London" because "he just didn't look smart enough to be a Jack". His full name is still "Jack London", after the author who often wrote about Malamutes.

Russell was named as a joke, I guess. Since he's black and Russell means "red" (and dogs can only grow hairs variations on black or red pigments). I was being funny, but no one else got how funny I thought it was. :(

Then, when we were younger, our last Akita's name was Teddy Bear (because obviously, every Akita looks like a teddy bear), our GSD was Chili because he shivered when we first got him.

I've already picked out my Kishu's name - "Tomiko" - though it's not set in stone (and the puppy isn't close yet). I liked the idea that you name a kid (or a dog) what you hope will be reflected in their personality.

Love this thread! Can't wait to see other responses. :)
    @Zinja -> +1 for Pavlov
@Saya -> Saya has always been a very cute name, to me. :)
  • @saya Rougarou like from supernaturals the human that turns cannabalistic and maggoty?

Reilly just sounded like that was her name, and she's a lurcher, a good celtic names works. Reilly is direct, and all-business. Her Fancy name is Sterling's Marble Rei- Sterling is the name of the shelter she came from, Marble Rei/Rye is brindle bread :)

Seiji was a "nice boy's" name to me (Seiji Amasawa- Whisper of the Heart), an artist's name. But I call him Sage, and he has turned out to be the Teacher Dog I didnt know I needed, so he kindof IS a sage. He's not as serene as a sage, but important teachers appear in unexpected ways.

Juno is a tough goddess and a spaceship. I like my girls to have rugged, strong names. I love to say JUUUUUUUUUUUUN- O! and she loves it when i call her, too. Her long name is Yamabushi no Momiji Juno. Momiji = Maple, which is an excellent name for a dog that lives in the land of fantastic foliage and mm-mm Maple Syrup!

Matsu is named after pines, I thought it was cool to name both kai after trees, since we live int he Nat'l Forest and hiking's our Thing. I think of him as dignified even though I havent met him yet and he's a fat little goofy puppy. :) I thought I would name him Akamatsu (Red Pine) if he was an akatora, or Kuromatsu (black pine) if he was kuro, but he isnt aka, and black pines are a coastal species, not a mountain species- so I went with Matsumori-Go! which is pine forest. I like the kanji for mori it looks like three trees.

I also like to name my animals words that dont sound like each other's names- they all have different vowel sounds I-E, A-E, U-O, Ah-U on purpose.

the cats, Loki and Finn- Loki is a trickster (but my cat isnt really, she's fat and honest and playful and weird- we thought since she was a black cat from the shelter in Salem, Mass. she might be a bit tricky, but I'd say she's actually more treaty.) Finn is named for the Irish hero Finn MacCumhail, because I was doing illustration at the time for a storyteller who told the Legend of Finn really well, and as a kitten he was indomitable: Loki would kick his ass, and he'd just get up and tuck back in to her for more. Couldnt keep that cat down! He's still indomitable in his old age, every time we think "well, this is it, Finn..." he comes thru or persists despite the ailment- thyroid, bladder, arthritis, "I was down, but Im fine now!"

It started with the cats, so that's where I'll begin.

    Ghost
My grandmother died in my second year of High School. Shortly thereafter I kept imagining/hallucinating a black cat following me. I would catch a glimpse of it out of the corner of my eye, or feel a cat curl up at the foot of my bed while I slept, only to realize later that the door was closed and none of the cats had been in my room that night. I thought it must be the spirit of my grandmother watching over me. This continued for a month or so. On the last day of school, some jackass left three newborn kittens less than a day old in a cardboard box underneath a desk in the math department computer lab. Had my mom not gone in there to get something for her class, the lab would have been locked up and they may not have been discovered until summer school began three weeks later. One of the kittens was already dead. The other two were solid grey and solid black. My mom brought them home for me to foster, since at the time I was volunteering at a cat rescue. I fell in love with the black one, and named him Ghost in honor of my imaginary guardian spirit.

    Gremlin
The other kitten was named by my best friend. She was two years older than me, so had just graduated and was looking to move out soon. She decided she wanted the grey female kitten when she had her own place. She came over to visit a lot and helped me bottle feed them. While feeding them one afternoon, she remarked that the kitten's goofy elongated ears flapped like a gremlin from some anime she liked. Thus the girl was named. My friend never did take the cat, however, so "Gremmykins" is still with me.

    Graveling
I moved up to Davis for college along with another friend and her ancient cat, Nightsky, who was well on her way to 20 years old. My friend was devoted to this cat like none other, and being somewhat sensitive, I knew the cat's death was going to wreck her. I was down visiting my parents over summer break when she called me and asked if she could have a kitten. Her coworker at the grocery store had a litter she was trying to find homes for. I relented; I figured if she got a kitten before Nightsky passed away, the kitten would be a comfort to her in her time of need instead of feeling like a replacement. The little tabby went without a name for months, going by "kitten" until one day she tried to kill me by stringing network cable taught 4" above the floor in front of my bedroom door. We were into Dead Like Me at the time, so her name became Graveling. Our living situation degraded, I moved out to avoid some terrible room mate drama, and because Nightsky still hadn't kicked the bucket my friend told me to take Graveling with me.

Clearly at this point a naming scheme had begun...

    Gryphon
I dropped out of college to get married and play World of Warcraft. My husband and I talked about having a pair of large dogs one day. Five years ago, we decided we were ready. I started researching breeds and chose the Japanese Akita. I couldn't find one, however, so I got the next best thing - an all white American Akita. With an established theme from my cats, I started searching for a good name for her. There are a lot more monsters that start with "G" than you would think, but most are not girly. We tried Goblin, Gorgon, Goliath, and a number of others. Then I remembered that there are snowy white gryphons in World of Warcraft. It sounded much better than the other names and tied in with WOW and one of my favorite books ("White Gryphon" by Mercedes Lackey) so it was settled.
    Vowel sound: "ih" Griff

    Gojira
I felt my previous names had really backed me into a corner by the time we got our second dog and first Japanese Akita. In addition to the constraints I was already laboring under, I wanted my Japanese Akita to have a Japanese name but still be recognizable to English speakers. Godzilla, or Gojira in Japan, was a stroke of pure genius. It also gave her a cool theme song! Ohhhhh no, there goes Tokyo! Go, go, Godzilla!
    Vowel sound: "oh-ee" Goji

    Kaiju Kensha
Before I got any more dogs, I decided to start my kennel. I needed a Japanese name that fit my monster theme. A friend suggested Kaiju in honor of Gojira (the most famous kaiju of all) and it was of course absolutely perfect. I am a total nut for alliteration as well, so I love the way Kaiju Kensha or Kaiju Kennels sounds. By choosing this name, it opened up far more options for naming my dogs than simply monsters beginning with the letter G.

    Ghidora
But I did have one more G monster to use first! Godzilla's greatest nemesis, King Ghidora, was the inspiration for Gojira's boyfriend and the second dog I imported.
    Vowel sound: "ee-uh" Gidra

    Mosura
By the time I decided to import a third dog, my friends were already yelling at me for having too many G names. Additionally I couldn't find any more kaiju that I liked... Gaigan is kind of lame, all things considered. I wanted to use one of the major/famous monsters. So for my white dog I picked Mothra, aka Mosura. As an added bonus, this is the only major female kaiju and the color seemed very appropriate.
    Vowel sound: "ah-uh" Mosra

    The next generation...

    Kiryuu and Kumonga
I've already picked out the call names for my next male and female pair, hopefully offspring from Bijo's first and second litters. The male will be Kiryuu, which is the name of a mecha/clone of Godzilla. The female will be Kumonga, a giant female spider who is the main antagonist in "Son of Godzilla" but later allies with the main good monsters. I think Kiryuu and Kumonga, as a pair, roll off the tongue nicely.
Vowel sound: "ee-oo" Ryu and "oo-oh" Kumo

The puppies' planned registered names are another thing entirely.

    Akaryuu Go
For my first litter I want all pups' names to begin with the letter "A". I like this name, which means red dragon. I love dragons (hence my screen name) and if this pup turns out to be my Kiryuu, his call name and registered name will fit together closely.

    Anzu No Sachi Go
This is a name I had picked out for Gojira's daughter. Now, she will never have a daughter, so it must be in spirit only. Gojira's registered name is Momo No Sachi, which means happy peach. Taking the fruit theme and applying my letter "A" constraint, I wound up with Anzu No Sachi the happy apricot.

    Amazakura Go
This name means sweet cherry. I was looking for a name with sakura in it, since both parents of this litter (and a couple of the grandparents) have sakura as part of their names.

    Asayake Go
I have tried to make sure that the names sound distinctly different from each other, since Japanese is hard on western ears and tongues. I had originally chosen Akizora autumn sky for the fourth puppy, but felt it was too similar to Akaryuu and Amazakura. My friend suggested this name which means morning glow or sunrise colors.
  • Rougarou is like a Cajun were wolf or something like that supposedly if you see one you turn into one? I dunno. Audabon zoo had a statue of their version of it. lol

I know the creature has been on various series..

Yeah Vash the stampede good name for a dog that gets into trouble.

@cdenney You're a Supernatural fan too?! *highfive* I need to catch up, I'm two seasons behind

Man @poeticdragon you sure have some interesting pet names. I really dig the Godzilla names :)

Tsune (Shiba) was a shortening of "kitsune". I wanted his name to be Japanese but not just call him fox, either in english or Japanese. The original owner just called him Spaz because he was so energetic, but it wasn't even really a name. He was just the one that "spazzed out" all the time, he was neglected :(

Ren you'll have to ask @sjp051993 lol. I kept it though because I like the sound of it and it's asian. I had a character in WoW named "Renren" and always had people messaging either in Chinese or asking if I spoke Chinese or Japanese.
  • Toki's name is from metalocalypse. I wanted a Japanese name for my Japanese Akita, but I wanted something easy to pronounce for American audiences with a recognizable American reference. I wanted something cute, but masculine at the same time. I think it fits him since he is cute and goofy at home but acts macho masculine in public. I just knew he was a Toki from the first time I saw him at 3 weeks old. (Toki actually means "bunny" in Korean)

As for the second puppy i'm going to get sometime next year, I've chosen a few names, but this entire time I have been leaning towards Aela. (pronounced "aye-ella", though I think it is pretty clear how it is pronounced). I want something really feminine and unique that can be cute when she is little, but beautiful when she is older. Something she can grow into. The name is from Skyrim: (Aela the Huntress), and Akitas have that primitive, wild side to them.
Except... my boyfriend doesn't like the name. Merrr >_>

As for the official name for above said female, I would like the name to reference raking light, a photography term, to mirror the bridling, (if the pup is brindle) or "black magic woman" because it is one of my favorite childhood songs.
  • @cezieg one of my roommates got me on it and we started on season 3. Am on season 6 now. It is all on instant stream on netflix. Quick way to catch up.
  • @jellyfart Well considering Toki is the most "ripped" one out of the band you hit it spot on haha. As for the proper name, Bokeh? or Umami? (I might have to lay claim to Umami now that I think about it lol)

@cdenney Oh no way, looking it up on netflix then thanks!
  • @poeticdragon I totally used to play WoW and I read the Mecedes Lackey books too lol. I read the whole gryphon series. White was the second :D

@jellyfart i think Aela from skyrim is a great name for a dog... im sure my bf would demend I name my dog that if he thought of it.
  • @poeticdragon and @lizzysilvertongue if you liked the black gryohon, white and silver read song in the silence by Elizabeth kerner. That entire series is well done.
  • edited November 2012
@cezieg Bwahahahaha I am trying to convince @jellyfart she needs a pup from Bijo's second litter in the US... which will be my "B" litter. Bokeh gives me additional ammo. ;)

@lizzysilvertongue @cdenney I've read all of the Velgarth books. For a while my entire home network was named after creatures from that series. Sadly I do not have time to read for pleasure anymore, so I wont be able to start anything new.

@lizzysilvertongue My husband vetoed the name Wagnaros for Gryphon. Such a spoil sport. My friend has a kitty named Mewfurian though.
  • Kaiser - my miniature dachshund. We actually spent a long time trying to name him, but nothing really felt "right". He came with the name S'more since he's an Irish spotted chocolate and tan. I thought it was a cute name but really awkward to say and didn't fit his personality. One day we were talking about the grocery list and kaiser came up (as in the bun). It just seemed perfect, especially with the double meaning being a German ruler.

And I know they're not dogs, but I'll mention them anyway. Tiramisu (the cat) was named after the dessert, because his fur matches the colours. Remy is named after Remington Steele though I have no idea why; she's a dainty girl cat.

Jet and Ludo - rats. First I had it in my head that I wanted to name a black berk pair Jet & Onyx after the precious stones. Since one was hooded I decided that didn't fit anymore. Ludo had what looked like a heart marking on his back, so I decided to name him after the band (they have an album called You're Awful, I Love You). Then Jet still worked, since that's a band as well. :)

Chorizo and Kielbasa - rats. Named after types of sausage.

Watson and Blooper - rats. I meant for them to be a themed pair. It was going to be Watson and Crick, or Watson and Skinner. Neither of those names seemed to suit my little hairless dude so he ended up being Blooper, as in a (genetic) mistake and the squid enemy from Mario.

Bonus: Jack - my mom's Boxer. He was named Captain Jack by his breeder. The whole litter had Pirates of the Caribbean themed names, and Jack had an eyepatch. It just seemed to fit him, so we never changed it.

ChoCho means butterfly in Japanese. Peggy named her before she went to Brads'. We were going to change her name since "chocho" is kind of a vulgar word in Spanish (my family are a bunch of Cubans who only speak Spanish lol), but having ChoCho react as badly as she did to the move from Brad's and her having such hard time adjusting we kept her name. We didn't want to confuse or stress her more than she already was. We've learned to deal with people's reactions... lol

Goro's name was a pretty tough one to decided. We had to pick a name both English and Spanish speakers could pronounce, while still keeping it Japanese. After spending the night looking at Goro's being a beefcake through Brad's puppy cam my husband started joking by repeating "goro goro goro" as he imagined him rolling around the house. "Goro goro goro" is the Japanese onomonopia for something fat rolling. If you use the English "r" it doesn't make much sense... The Japanese "r" has a similar sound to a "d"... Ro like Do-the music note, not "do" as in "do something".

I liked it, but we kept on searching and a month later I ran into the legendary Japanese sword-smith Gorō Masamune and we decided it was manly enough for him! Gorō Masamune's Gorō kanji is 五郎. It means 5th son which was perfect since Goro was puppy #5.
  • Interesting thread =)

@poeticdragon, love the detail, thought and background involved in naming your pets =)

I was out voted when it came time to name Kuma lol I had lots of names picked out and then my husband and kids found the name 'Kuma' and since she looked like a bear as a puppy we went with it. It definitely fits her, though, so I am glad they threw it in the mix!

Jerzzee- We rescued her at 3 weeks old and she was black, white and had a little brown on her and she looked like a teenie tiny Jersey cow lol So we named her Jerzzee and it definitely fits her! This is the sweetest and most tolerant little dog ever (unless you're a stranger trying to come near her mom lol)

Hachi.... Honestly, we just really liked the name and the movie made me cry.... a lot lol But it is easy to say and since he is my trouble maker I say it a LOT so easy is great hahahahaha His name changed several times before this one stuck.... it was Niko first then a few other things lol He came to us with the name 'Cowboy' well, that just wasn't acceptable lol

Kameko- I love the meaning 'turtle child' and since we just love turtles and my husband has several sea turtle tattoos it seemed fitting :) It stuck and I just love it!

Lola- She came to us at 3-4 weeks old and her name was 'Lemon'. She is a Yellow Naped Amazon so I was trying to come up with a name based on color/type. The Barry Manilow song 'Copacabana' came into mind somehow and it just fit. And Lola sings her song and it is so funny. I used to play the CD for her when I would leave and the CD skipped or got stuck or something because sometimes she adds the weirdest sounds at the end of the chorus and it sounds like a record skipping lol

I have too many more names to list lol All the reptiles/birds/small animals have names too but it would take me all day to list them ;)
  • @cezieg what does umami have to do with photography? I just googled it: spicy bitter sweet salty

Raking light would be, I think, "Hayai Hikari" ...which sounds like ninja speak, lol

Bokeh would be perfect for a red, but not so much for a brindle because bokeh is blurry-ness, I don't want a blurry brindle ;)
  • @jellyfart Umami has nothing to do with photography. Last thing I did before bed was check the forum and I think that may have just been an interesting name that popped up lol.
Yeah bokeh being the term for foreground/background blue outside of the subject may not describe the ideal coat, but while doing a quick search for words I didn't come up with any other solid Japanese words for photography specific terms. JA are pretty agile and quick so it could be descriptive of the dog being a blur ha. If you wanted to go with spanish then "raya" means stripes. I take it "hikari" is the adjective and "hayai" is light?

    @poeticdragon bwahahaaa *taps fingertips together*

@Hinata23 LOL I forgot about "chocho" being close to a vulgar slang term, that's too funny! Having been in Miami I bet you got some raised eyebrows pretty often lol. It's perfect in Japanese though, and "ChoCho & Goro" just sounds great.
  • @cezieg oops, did I do my adverb noun placement wrong? Hakari is the light, Hayai is the raking. How does that work in Japanese? I've no idea.
  • edited November 2012
@cezieg Umami is totally my favorite flavor/type of taste. I love the umami commercials, too, although they always make me go to the kitchen for something savory to nom. Guess I'll save that for my "U" litter in ... 2024? LOL!

@jellyfart What do you think of "Boke No Hana" which is a specific type of bokeh flower photography.

For "raking light" I get Hikari o Kakiatsumeru from google translate, with kakiatsumeru literally meaning to gather up, pick up, scrape together, collect. I think a different form (adjective instead of verb) might be better though. Perhaps "gathered light" or similar? The best suggestion I found was 光の召集さ Hikari No Shūshūsa "the convening of the light."

I get hayai as "fast" or "early"...

Awesome thread! I really enjoyed reading everyone's posts!

    Our theme is Samurai.

    Saigo (future Japanese Akita)
Our male JA will be called Saigo, after Saigo Takamori 西郷 隆盛. But instead of using 西郷 (def. Western Prefecture) , I'm going to use 儕号 (def. Companion). The story of The Last Samurai is based loosely on Saigo Takamori and he comes from the same village as my family in Kyushu.

    Katsumoto (Fish)
We just got a Japanese fighting fish (betta fish), and named him after another samurai, Katagiri Katsumoto 片桐 且元. His name has since become "Banzai" - my hubby will make faces and wiggle his fingers saying "Baaaaaanzzaaiii" in order to get the fish to go crazy.
  • @cezieg lol Yeah... It almost always went like this: "Her name is ChoCho and it means butterfly in Japanese... I didn't name her, no I'm not going to change her name."
  • Saru Bu - Monkey...Bu. lol. He went nameless for a week before I named him. while I was crate training him, his Shiba scream sounded like a crazy monkey. The Bu is just because it rhymed and I wanted to get my money's worth when I made his name tag since it charged per line. He has earned a pretty funny set of nicknames too namely "crap-face" which he picked up from his puppy habit of eating his poop. The other is "Nobo" which derived from "No bows" because I noticed his elbows/knees?? weren't as pronounced as other dogs'. and lastly, my username "Yandharr", because it was a weird sound he used to make as a puppy, like a yap/growl vocalization. In the house and when training he goes by Nobo since it's simple and short; though he knows them all without any issues.

Ciqala - did not want to do a Japanese name because everyone else was doing it. Before that, I was considering Ren, Oni, and some others. Got an email from Brad asking what I wanted to name her and I panicked since I thought I would name her AFTER I got her since all I had to go off of was a few pictures. My cousin and I formed a pretty intense 2 man day-long focus group and came up with Ciqala (sih-KAH-la). It means "little one", with connotations of being small but strong, in Lakota. fits perfectly since she is small and fairly hard-core. Sometimes I call her Noba just to match Nobo.
  • @jellyfart - since we're on the subject of names... could you explain your username pretty please? it makes me laugh every time I see it- especially in serious threads.
  • @Yandharr haha! picture a jellyfish farting. Isn't that the most adorable thing ever? :D

It actually started when I had to do a self portrait in a digital-design class. I photographed myself and photoshopped a floating screenshot of photoshop that which I was drawing digital jellyfish, who were floating off the floating screen. I needed layers for each jellyfish and the titles ensued "jellyspaghetti" "jellyboo" "jellyfart", ect... hence.... Jellyfart.

It is also my gamertag on xbox. and yes, I kick ass on halo 4. feel free to add if you have xbox! :)
  • @MapleTwinkie I love Siago! Especially your story behind it; I had no idea. How interesting!
I really like when names have a special, personal meaning behind them. A name is something that will follow person/dog around everywhere they go, so might as well make it personal :)
  • @jellyfart , thanks! I love the story behind Toki and your nickname too :)
Suddenly I want to have more pets so that I can have fun thinking up names, lol.
  • edited November 2012
@cezieg - Ren in japanese can mean lotus, depending on the kanji they're using. It's a pretty popular boy's name.
