What do you guys think about his nose? I'm trying to decide if I think it's a sunburn or from dry air or... if it's something worse. PARANOID MOM.
But yeah, it's all cracked and the top side looks like it's peeling off while the inside looks raw (it started bleeding today)... so I'm hoping it's just that it's dry or burnt from winter/sun.
Oh, this happened to my GSD! There's a condition in which this happens, and I'm relatively useless, because I can't remember the name of it, but yes,his nose was always raw like that, and actually parts started peeling away. We had to put chapstick on his nose and in his nose, and when it got bad, we treated it off and on with steroids. I wish I could remember what it is called, but I can't, but it looks very much like what our boy had....
I hope that's not the case, though, and its just from rubbing on the crate during the flight or sunburn or something, because it was a drag for our poor boy to always have nose bleeds and a raw nose...
I think it's too early to worry just yet. The bottom portion looks to me like he has an old scrap that hasn't filled in with color yet.
The nose issue you might be thinking about is discoid lupus (nose, top of snout) or pemphigus erythematosus (nose, eyes, ears). I've seen the first in Jindos and the later in an Akita. Takoda's nose doesn't look like theirs.
Haha, thank you for indulging the crazy, paranoid side of me. That's exactly what I thought "OH GOD. LUPUS. HE HAS LUPUS." before the rational, normal side of my brain spoke up like the good, reliable thing it is.
This dog's owner just increased the dog's indoor time and the bleeding nose that you see below went away.
Another owner used tacrolimus (a medicine originally used to prevent organ transplant rejection) with good success. Steroids with their side-effects are no longer necessary.
Awe! I love that Jindo's face (and fabulous eyelashes!).
That's good to know. I'm hoping Takoda's nose is something environmental. If it's still looking rough or bleeding frequently in a few weeks, I'll have to take him in just to get another opinion if I can't find something to help it.
@Edgewood - everything is usually ok in paradise. They bond durjng walks and love to annoy the cats together. Takoda is doing well with them. He abd London have had a few yelling contests but only for a second and never serious. They're doing pretty well!
@Crispy - well, that is good. And just so you know, my two often have those "yelling" contests where they make a lot of noise and then boom, it stops and they are happy and walk off. I think that may be one way of shikoku communicating and at least London is not taking offense to Takoda yelling at him. :-O
Edited to add: My Kuma is an especially loud yeller, especially when Sachi is really persistent, but he never connects or bites, just makes a lot of noise and that usually stops her from escalating it further.
@Edgewood - oh YES. Takoda's bark is SO loud. He is very vocal, but so is London. This morning they got into it right as they started playing. Takoda (who was initially uncertain) began to butt-bump London. London thought that was rude and went into Takoda. Takoda bounced away, yelled back and two seconds later, they were okay again. I suspect these will fade as London gets to know Takoda. London can be sensitive.
@Edgewood I was JUST going to comment on Shikoku vocalization! ChoCho is SO noisy when she plays! When they wrestle Goro is silent and ChoCho does all the loud growling! lol
@Hinata23 - Sachi is pretty quiet too when she plays, growls a little but not too much. Kuma is very loud. If you watch this video from 1:30 onwards, Sachi gets really persistent (but not vocal) and Kuma starts yelling at her pretty loudly and snarling (but no contact). Then boom, shake it off and trot away.
@Crispy -shikoku love to hip slam. London will get used to that!
@Edgewood YUP! That's what she sounds like! Imagine all the noise in an apartment LOL
@Crispy Yeah, even though Goro is almost double ChoCho's weight she tackles him to the ground and slams him into the wall lol. Shikoku can play dirty. :P
He and London played whilewe were at work yesterday. He's been super clingy today now thay I've brought him by himself tho. When I leave him in the office, he whines and cries and disrupts my coworkers and clients but because he's wary of strangers, I can't have him follow me everywhere. I'm keeping him busy with chewies and games.
I'm hoping this is part of the settling process and the separation anxiety doesn't get worse. I would like to leave him home tomorrow... but I may have to bring him with me.
Well, if he is like his brother Kuma, the separation anxiety will be there somewhat. Kuma does not like when I leave him, he likes to be with me, and even at 5 years old, has separation anxiety, but it is a lot less than when he was younger. But he also is very friendly with new people. My female, on the other hand, is not worried when I leave her.
Man, I want to meet other Shikoku now. I want to meet Kuma!
I love Mura (who is coming to stay at my work for a week! Excited! ...I feel a little stalker-ish. I've only spoken to Paul once and it was very short) but I haven't met any other Shikoku. I know @Calia and @JessicaRabbit are in the area, but I always feep like a creep when I'm like 'lol, let me come and meet/gush over/pet your dog'.
LoL, if you ever feel like visiting don't be afraid to ask On another note, I'll be in CT in April with all the pups to test out Tetsu in a new-ish dog sport called Barn HUnt.
Haha, I feel like I got the best of both worlds with Takoda. Yes, he's very handsome... but he's also got a perfect temperament for my household.
He's so relaxed and amazing in the house, but always ready to go and do things with me. He's a perfect size - I've never actually had a medium sized dog until now! It's so cool to not have to worry about his size. I've only ever had large breeds so this is so new to me.
He's extremely forgiving of other dogs' rudeness, he's obviously got some predatory behaviors going on with smaller animals, but he isn't inappropriate (just very interested) and plays well with small dogs and is kind to my cats outside of a few chasing episodes.
He's not has high energy or rocket-fuel as I was (AM!) imagining my Kishu would (WILL!) be. He's not as focused as Aisu (the Kishu I met) was. He's kind of like London... if London was one third his own size and we've traded dog-sassy for people-sassy.
I have to say, he does seem a lot different than Mura--I guess not "A LOT", but he has key differences that make him an individual... which is why I want to meet more Shikoku now that I have him. I want to appreciate what is "Takoda" and what is "Shikoku".
I will say that his brother Kuma is a lot like how you describe Takoda directly above. He is also very relaxed, but ready to go and hike at a moment's notice. Is also very tolerant of rude behavior by other dogs.
My female is definitely different in some key areas (less tolerant of new dogs), more hyper at times.
What I find similar in both of them is that they desire to follow me around and be with me and that they both have soft personalities (and hate being scolded).

Very excited for you!

I promise I'm not crazy.

I'm just one of those people who frets first.

I'm super happy he found such a nice home and the forum was able to help make it happen. I live our NKF community. :x
