More on the Pachon Navarro http://pointingdogblog.blogspot.it/2011/08/breed-of-week-pachon-navarro.html

You have received some excellent advice already. The key point is to slowly add stimulus and excitement in the environment while maintaining focus from the dog. It's good to practice this with games of tug or something where the dog gets really r…

What a superstar! You have much to be proud of!

If the defecation frequency and consistency is normal, I wouldn't fret. This is usually a behavioral issue - not a diet or nutritional problem. Puppies learn it from other dogs (in some instances, their mothers who of course eat a lot of poo when t…

When feeding large-breed puppies, look for a diet close to the following profile: Fat 12% Calcium ~1% Calories 300-400 kcal/cup Ca:Phos ratio of 1.2 As mentioned above, the protein content is not implicated in the development of orthopedic disease…

Sorry, no. Please read this article: http://www.lgd.org/library/Optimal%20feeding%20of%20large%20breed%20puppies.pdf I would consider an Akita a large breed puppy, and feed him as such. Feed a puppy diet specifically for large breeds and keep hi…

I would not give him the supplement. Calcium supplements are not recommended for puppies eating commercially available diets designed for growth.

For now, keep everyone safe. Willie and Haru should not be together unsupervised. In fact, let Haru drag a leash and only allow him in the same room as Willie when you are both home. Get some baby gates etc, to achieve separation without isolatio…

Have you seen him lick the lesion/lump? It doesn't appear to have much salivary stain in the photograph. Another possibility is a histiocytoma, particularly if Kaiju is a young dog. A quick fine needle aspirate at the clinic should be helpful.

Personally, I'd steer clear. Luxating patella, hypothyroidism, juvenile cataracts, Factor VII deficiency, portosystemic shunts, heart murmurs, distichiasis...I wouldn't be surprised about epilepsy either. http://www.akkaoa.org/healthissues.htm

@brada1878: I am a fan of LDS Leather, but apparently Dr. Dave had some trouble ordering from them. @sunyata: If you get a standard rolled leather collar sized to the center hole, there is enough space behind the buckle to implement the slide-on…

You can order nice leather rolled collars, among other things from https://quillin.com/ and http://www.hoganleather.com/

http://fearfuldogs.com/ is a helpful resource and provides some exercises to work on.

I linked to Heather H.'s blog because it has step-by-step instructions and a demonstrative video slide show, not because I necessarily agree with all of her other opinions. One of the biggest problems with head halters and front-clip harnesses is…

Some won't like my answer, but here's what I would recommend: (1) Ditch the harness (of any sort). (2) Apply martingale collar and attach long line. (3) Do exercises as outlined in this blog post: http://cynography.blogspot.it/2011/12/it-takes-…

The reddish-brown staining is from tear pigments called porphyrins. I would not say that the use of Angel Eyes is vet recommended. Daily use of an antibiotic without a prescription for a cosmetic problem is not responsible. http://www.veterinar…

Have you found the culprit yet? Another trick is to use crayons. Crayola crayons are non-toxic (kids eat them all the time) so pick a color for each dog, use a cheese grater, and add some crayon shavings to their food. It's a handy trick for cats…

I'm thinking about getting some Kuranda beds for some outdoor lounging space. Not sure if that will diminish the number of dog-sized craters that are routinely dug around here or not ;) I'll have to see if they ship to FPO addresses. There are …

I would get a horse product for your gaggle of dogs - it will give you the most bang for your buck. There are many options. Here's a popular one over at SmartPak ProBios: available in 25 lb buckets for $122.00 http://www.smartpakequine.com/prob…

If you're OK with the additional cost, I say go for it. Additional cost can be expected with the additional time under anesthesia and also the use of a laparoscopy unit. Check out this post and the comments. http://www.petconnection.com/blog/201…

Do a trainer search on the APDT website. http://www.apdt.com/petowners/ts/default.aspx

Why is ivermectin specifically not recommended? the past, the Southern California area has been relatively free of heartworm disease, but recent cases have been diagnosed in dogs that have not traveled out of the Los Angeles area. Confirmed case…

Feeding Blue Buffalo was associated with hypercalcemia and Vitamin D toxicity last summer. http://news.vin.com/VINNews.aspx?articleId=16468 This is probably what your friends were alluding to, Crispy.
