Awe, Kuma is so cute!!! When Mika was teething, we gave her ice cubes. It was the only things she would eat. You could also put a wet rope toy in the freezer.
As for the rawhide. I NEVER give my dogs rawhide. I've read too many articles siting rawhide as toxic or indigestible. I've not seen anything particularly scientific, lots of speculation, but there are just too much out there to ignore.
Dave - Ye, the little guy likes to chew. Thankfully, so far it's only been his chew toys, with the exception of the main doorstop. During all of these, Nyx was in the bedroom with Nat. These were all taken early in the morning, after our first walk.
Barbara - Kuma has, literally, destroyed 4 rawhides bones so far. I can't see anything that might indicate he's having problems with it. His first rawhide bone was given to us by Silvia, and all the dogs were going crazy at his bone, so I assume all of them play with rawhides. I'm getting a few rope toys I ordered, in a few days, so I can freeze and rotate.
Im with Barbara on rawhide. We stopped with that and went to compressed rawhide, which is a little better and then gave it all up. Chad got these DISGUSTING hooves, they reeked when the dogs chewed on them, but they loved them. I LOVE nylabones, I have VERY aggressive chewers.
We also froze washcloths for Niko when she was teething, ropes are a great idea. Do you have a dollar store? There are great rope toys there that are cheap and you can stock up.
I've never seen nylabones around here. With the flavours and all Kuma might take them well. Rubber toys he doesn't like at all, he couldn't care less. He likes his ropes and his compressed rawhide bones. I'll take a look at the euro shops to see if they have anything of the sort, thanks Rachael.
They last forever, but I suggest getting the larger ones. We have one that has lasted almost 2 years, they are a godsend, safe and awesome. You can also put peanut butter on it.
They sound good. I have to see if I can find them around here. I bought a big rubber bone before we got him, but he doesn't even bother. Right now it's still a bit too big for him, but he doesn't care about rubber. The Kong he only cares about when it's stuffed. Along with the rope toys I ordered, I'm getting one of those balls that drop pieces of food. I hope that will keep him busy for a while.
It'll be tough to find the Nylabone outside the US, but I'll see if I can find a source for you. The parent company that I work for is Central Garden & Pet - they own Nylabone.
We went out to get Nat's laptop checked and, of course, we had to go to the petshop. I got Kuma, not a nylabone (cause they didn't have) but a nylon ring, vanilla flavoured. He went CRAZY with it! I had to take it away from him, cause it's already half past 11pm and he was running around and dropping it on the floors. I don't think the neighbours were liking it all that much...
The store had these bones, made out of potato starch, it seems, with various flavours. Has anyone tried these? They seemed pretty hard, so it would give him a good chew challenge. The ring just feels too thin, although it's good and hard and he loved it.
I got the small nylabone for Niko and the girls wore it down and we threw it out cause it got kinda small and I was scared of Sasha choking. Havent hear of the potato thing but it would be worth a try. That is how I became so smart (lol ), trial and error. There has got to be a version of the nylabone (big souper bones) in your area, it is just a matter of tracking ot down. Glad Kuma liked it. Maybe search "nylon chews" for your area or print off the product and take it into a petstore and ask them for their recomendations??
BTW my spelling sux today and im not trying. Good thing Romi isnt here!!
I forgot to say the ring is form Karlie. I'll check N Bones and Hartz too. Don't know how much it is to ship overseas, I forgot how much the person who sold us the Furminator charged to send it.
Having written this I noticed ho stupid I am for not taking a peek on ebay for nylabones, since I bought the Funrminator there for less than half the price I would have paid here.
I'll throw my two cents in on the Nylabone thing - I was fan of them when I had my husky, which was before I worked for the company that owned them. Nylabone was also really sweet when I first got Jazz - they seriously hooked me up on toys and treats, so much so that I shared with my fellow meetup people in December. I know they work really hard on trying to create toys and chews that stand up to a lot - please let me know if one doesn't work out, I'll talk to R&D about it. Just last week, I asked them if they were looking at getting into the pet food side and it's something they are kicking around. After seeing all the info on the boards here, I forwarded them a lot of the info and concerns that the "average" concerned dog owner has. They agreed that if they were to come out with a food, it'll have to be on the specialty side. I'll keep you guys posted.
Leonberger - when I go in to work tomorrow, I'll find out who they sell to internationally - they may not be in Portugal, but maybe at least in Europe.
Yes, I'm definitely going to check it out. And I might get one of those potato ones, just to see how he does on them. I'm thinking they'll last less than the compressed rawhide ones.
Okay, I've got some information on Nylabone. For those looking for a distributor worldwide, email sales@nylabone.com , include what country you are in and ask for distributors - Melissa will email you a list of distributors for your area. In addition, she emailed me the following list of US-based companies that sell Nylabone via catalog or online, several of which you should be able to order from internatinally.
Already emailed, and have a reply. No distributor in Portugal (expected) but there is one in Spain that does some distribution to Portugal, Melissa said. She also gave me the list you posted here. I'll try to contact to Spanish distributor. I wonder what it would take to become a distributor for Portugal...
No problem! I figure that's part of being on this forum - helping each other out when there's a need - especially if it coincides with what we do for a living!

That was so much fun to watch! Kuma is so cute.... and he is being rather bad to that bone.
Thanx for Kuma spam! More please.
