  • Looking good Toki! Is his coat turning more red or is that filter/lighting making him look that way? He's still ridiculously fuzzy , love it haha

Woah just realized I never replied to the N64 haha. Harvest Moon was my favorite growing up, StarFox and Zelda too of course. My little brother is a Zelda fanatic, anything Zelda he has to have it. If I still had Tsune he was going to get dressed up as StarFox for halloween haha. I had Pokemon Stadium for 64 too! All this recent talk of pokemon (costumes, games) makes me want to go find my old gameboy color and red/blue.
  • That cereal picture is amazing!!!! We might be able to get away with a "Wait" command for on cereal kibble... but that many!!?? No way!!! lolol Awesome, very cool looking Toki!

@cezieg Toki is not that red, so yes, it is a filter. The purpose of the photo was for the sake of making a tight looking photo and not so much a portrait of Toki. As I see it, the photo is more about rhythm, patterns, colors, shapes and a cool subject rather than a photo that describes the personality and look of Toki, if that makes sense. So. I decided to have fun with filters.
....But his coat, thats all Toki. He is a very fuzzy guy, and he is shedding a lot even as it is!
And dude! I was totally going to dress Toki up as starfox for halloween! I still want to, but it is so tempting to make him an Ewok instead ;)
  • Toki is so very handsome! Love the living room aftermath and the stick pictures. Is Toki considered a red (I'm not sure if this is the right terminology for Akitas...) or a silver brindle? :o In some pictures he seems quite light and others, quite dark.
  • @crispy he is considered a red brindle. His red isn't very saturated, but it isn't pale enough to be a silver brindle. (correct me if i am wrong, but genetically, silver brindles are just really, really pale reds. there is no such thing as a genetically white dog with brindling)

Toki's coloring is sort of in this weird middle ground that in poor lighting conditions, (interiors), he looks muddy and desaturated. But in good lighting conditions, like sunlight or in the studio, his coat is really clear and beautiful. Depending on the studio lighting, he can really look different too (better and not so better), but that is a whole 'nother conversation, haha.
  • Toki would be considered a red brindle.
  • Haha Toklahoma is a great name. He looks great by the way!

Whether the dog is labeled red or silver brindle is based on the pigment of the non-black stripes.
    - Any amount of color varying from apricot to chestnut will probably be labeled as red brindle.

Whether the dog is labeled silver or black brindle is based on how thick the black stripes are.
    - The thicker the stripes and the fewer grey hairs the more likely the dog will be labeled as black brindle.

Some people outside of Japan will label a dog blue brindle.
    - Typically a dog with ash grey and apricot stripes, although I've seen pale red brindles also be called blue.

Note that any pale color is undesirable.

Brindle Japanese Akitas still have urajiro its just not as obvious because it only affects the non-black stripes and only in certain areas. As such, many red brindles will have silver brindling on the muzzle chest and lower part of the legs. There is nothing wrong with these markings. The body color should be used to determine type of brindle.
  • Right to echo what PD said. Think of it this what - the color with the highest % covering the dog is the color of the brindle. Excluding the white which is the urajrio pattern that all except a white JA must have.

@jellyfart - thank you! I really like Toki's color. Normally I really like the rich reds seen in some of the akatora Kai, but I think that Toki's red pigment makes him look very... "deep" probably isn't the word for it, but I "multifaceted" doesn't sound awesome enough. Anyway, his coat looks super fantabulous!

I understand the concept of the red intensity and shading and how it's inherited vs the brindle intensity ("regular" brindling and "reverse" brindling) and the patterns of black hairs on a dog, but I wasn't clear on exactly where the line was drawn on the red vs silver brindle for the breed. It's really interesting. :) Thank you!
  • Good deal! I wasn't criticizing, just curious. I do photography as a hobby and half the time I tweak individual color saturation to get the "emotion" or "energy" of the picture to come across.

Haha an Ewok would be awesome! With his color you put ears on him and he can be Peppy from StarFox lol.
  • I just went back to the top of the first page and looked at Toki's baby pictures....I suggest you all do that. Stop the world and melt with me..."awwww!!!!"
  • Me and Toki went to Cedar Hill State Park. Who knew that Dallas actually had some beautiful scenery. (dallas is very ugly, for those who are not familiar, hence why i live far south)

This is him at the Joe Pool Lake Marina.

  • Wow! Toki is such a handsome boy!! I take all my noob photos with my phone Dx. Yours look fantastic (love the 5D)! :x
  • He's getting handsomer as the days go!! Thanks for sharing. Toki is adorable...!
  • @jellyfart His camouflage in the 5th picture is amazing.
  • @slkblaze well, the last photos I took with my iphone, so not all are with the 5D. Cameras have nothing to do with photography :)

    thanks everyone!

we actually went back to the same park today but did a different trail. Well, akitas can go 3 miles without stopping. (i had to take a break a few times though to keep up with him)
  • Julia totally missed my joke :(

oh i get it now... i thought you counted from the bottom up and you were being serious about his camouflage, since Toki prides himself on his stripes and stuff ;)
    the lake is pretttyyyyy!!! :)
  • I agree, the lake is beautiful. How far is this from your house?
  • Only 15 minutes. Do you ever remember going over a hill that was way more pretty and hilly than Dallas normally was? (it was on i20)... Well that is where it was, except with lake and more pretty hills.

I don't know how ive lived here for 5 years and never been.
  • All I remember is how BIG your dang freeways are, and how artsy your offramps/interchanges are on the GPS map...
  • I wish Houston had pretty things D:

and @jellyfart I was more commenting on how high the image quality seemed. You definitely have some leet photography skills though - 90% of the dog photos I take are butts xD
  • Man that is some really nice forest/lake area that you guys have for hiking! Must have been awesome to get some fresh crisp winter air and a good workout with the Tokleton.
Really cool that you could bring him with you too, did they charge for him?

@poeticdragon LOL you made me doublecheck to see if I had missed him somehow
  • @cezieg nope, dogs are free. I decided that since it is a state park and I def want to go back a million times, I went ahead and got a state park pass. I'm def going to go back with a real camera; i found so many awesome photo locations to shoot toki :)
  • hey what part of dallas is that? my grandparents live off 20 bout 20 mins before "dallas"
  • Toki is super cute. I love his gazed look, like he's so chill and laid back.
  • Whaaa that's awesome, I'm pretty sure all the parks down here charge money or don't allow dogs. I need to do some more lookin-uppins. Can't wait to see more!
  • @lizzysilvertongue It is to the right of south Arlington and Mansfield in the middle between Dallas and Fort Worth. It is in the city of Cedar Hill at i20 and spur408. I bet then live pretty close. Cedar Hill is beautiful. I think I might try to move there one day.
