  • @ayk - Genius!

So... who wants to let me crash in their room? I'm small and fit in most overhead spaces or fold for under-the-bed storage.
  • Cool! I guess this means I can meet all the nihon ken excepting hokkaido.

@brada1868 - are you thinking of trying to put a NIPPO championship on kishin?
  • OK, here is a breakdown or list of important items.

The dog should be clean, and nails trimmed. No grooming products on the dogs (bodifiers, chalk, hairspray) Does not need to be professionally groomed. I just bath and dry my dogs.

Dog should have a collar - no choke collars! I usually use a simple martingale collar on mine, or a basic leather collar (no dangling tags) with a leash. Some people will use special Nippo leashes, but it is in no way necessary

Dress - Most women wear slacks or a skirt with a blouse. Men usually slacks and a dress type shirt. Some people dress more casual, but dressing up a little does show respect to the judge. Also a good pair of shoes. The show is outside and we show even in the rain so you want something that will give you a little traction if the grass is wet.

As for showing. The dogs are usually wicketed and teeth are checked before they enter the ring. For your initial judging, you and your dog will be in the ring alone. You cannot use bait or treats in the ring. You want the dog to stand naturally on the leash, preferably in front of you. The judge will move around the dog standing and squatting making notes the entire time. Then they usually ask you to move the dog at a trot in a triangle pattern.

After lunch the dogs are brought back to the ring by class for placements.

Note: most of the time the Nippo judges speak little english. There is an interperter there who is very good at translating everything. There is also usually an AKC judge there to assist the Nippo Judge. They do it for training, some of the AKC judges are better than others.

Again, dogs do not have to be Nippo registered to earn points toward their Nippo Title. You will get a certificate at the show signed by the judge that will tell you how many points you earned that day. I have Tora's and it is pretty cool.

The seminar is pretty cool, but again it is all translated. The banquet can be fun, but it just depends on your budget and if those extra things fit into it. They do have a raffle during the show and a auction after the banquet.

Looks like with starting my new job, I may not make it friday. I may just drive up saturday morning as it is about 2.5 hours from home. I have not decided yet on the banquet sat night yet.
  • I think we should have an NKF 'banquet' someplace together Sat night. What's the best pizza and beer in Maumee, Ohio? ;)

Do we keep the dogs with us/in cars- hotels usually say you cant leave dogs in the rooms alone, right? What is safe?
  • Can spectators do the seminar and banquet?
  • Yes, anyone can do the seminar and banquet. I do not remember the price for each. There will be a form for it the same time the entry form comes out.
You can safely leave dogs in the hotel provided they are in crates. Otherwise, yes the car. Temps are usually pleasant enough that time of year for dogs to stay in the car. Mine usually stay in the car while I attend the other functions, but I usually don't have a hotel room either.

Not sure about pizza up there. There are several places within walking distance of the hotel.

Dog should have a collar - no choke collars!
That's interesting. AKIHO requires chains for males in Japan and all dogs in Los Angeles branch. In fact almost every show I've ever been to (AKIHO, JACA, UKC, and as of last week AKC) required a chain or slip of some kind. We had to fight to make sure our traditional rolled leather collars would be allowed in UKC in addition to the chain. People scoffed at me ringside when I showed them, and implied that I was just a stupid pet person for wanting to put my dog in the ring with a fixed collar. Of course prong collars and harnesses are also banned.

  • I have shown UKC and AKC for years and have never bee required to use a chain or slip of any kind. I usually start my young dogs out on a nice thin rolled leather collar. Keep everything positive. Somewhere (i will have to find it) I have written instructions on showinh Nippo and it clearly stated no choke collars.
  • Oh, and I second having an NKF 'banquet'

I see a ton of these for sale at every show...

    image

And some quick google results for dog show collar returns...

Show Leads and Collars - Cherrybrook
Unique Dog Show Leads and Collars - Paws and Tails
The 3c's Dog Show and Grooming Supplies
    Show Collars & Leads | PetEdge.com
Custom Leather Dog Show Leads and Collars | Hogan Custom Leather

On and on... very many slips of different types and no fixed collars. I'm not saying fixed collars are banned in UKC (they're not) but I received derision for wanting to use one. If you google image search for "Westminster 2013" you will also see all the dogs wearing slip collars or just a slip lead with no collar at all.

It doesn't matter to me. I intend to use my collar and lead from Japan, since its a Japanese style show. I will bring a show chain in case they require it and if I don't need it then I don't need it. I doubt they'd ban the Japanese show collar (lol) but if they do then I'll have the chain as backup.
  • They encourage japanese style collars and leads.
  • OK guys, Just heard from a member of the club. She is looking for breed specific items for the raffle and auction. Anything you know of that is cool, let me know. They are very excited to hear that other breeds are coming and the numbers are growing.
  • I will also say that all money raised at the raffle and auction goes toward the cost of bringing the Judge over from Japan.
  • I may have some things I can donate to the raffle, will have to see what I didn't already give to JACA last month.

However I will be going to Japan immediately before the show so if there is something in Japan I can pick up to donate please have them let me know. At the minimum I'm getting myself a new collar and leash from the Adachiya store.
  • I may have you get me a collar and leash while you are over there.

I was asked to also post info if anyone is interested in sponsoring Trophies. Your name will also be listed in the program as a trophy sponsor.

Supreme Award and Reserve Supreme Award $125, (Best in Show and reserve best in show)
Saikosho and Jun Saikosho for each breed $125, (This is best of breed and best opposite sex)
Best Pup and Best of Op pup $125,
    entire class (1st-4th) $80,
    1st place $35 and 2nd-4th $25 each

If you would like to sponsor, send me a message.
  • ABOUT A NIPPO-STYLE SHOW
Dogs are first evaluated individually, with all dogs completed before bitches.

The ring may be separated into two sections - one section for dogs and one for bitches.

Dogs are judged by the NIPPO standard for each breed.

NO ALLOWANCES WILL BE MADE FOR MISSING TEETH
The handler stands behind the dog with the leash on the lower part of the dog’s neck, pulling gently at a 45-degree angle.
No baiting or double-handling is allowed.
The dog should stand naturally and face the judge boldly, standing naturally firm.
Showing the dog on too tight a lead will create wrinkles on the face and head and
    cause the ears to drop.

All dogs are judged on the ground, except young dogs may be picked up to facilitate teeth check.

Typically, the judge faces the dog in a squatting position, making notes on a critique sheet. During the individual judging the teeth are counted and dentition noted. Misbehavior during teeth counting is not held against the dog. (counting teeth may be done by the Nippo judge, or by the AKC assistant)

All dogs in regular classes are wicketed, however there is no disqualification for an exhibit under or over the standard height. The wicket is not the same as an AKC wicket. Dogs will stand on a flat hard surface for measuring. Wicketing may be done by the Nippo judge or the AKC assistant.

As each dog is examined, the judge completes a NIPPO standard evaluation form

During the lunch break, the judge reviews his evaluation forms and notes in preparation for comparative judging.

    COMPARATIVE JUDGING

Dogs may be gaited individually or in groups. The judge may rearrange the order of dogs, but that does not always signal order of preference.

Class placements are made with the 4th place dog selected first, and the winner of the class announced last.
Dogs placing in the classes receive points toward their Nippo-USA championship.

The winner of each class competes for the Best Dog and Best Bitch in that Breed. Best Dog and Best Bitch compete for Saikocho (Best of Breed) and Jun Saikosho (Best of Opposite Sex). At the discretion of the judge, the Saikosho and Jun Saikosko may be awarded Nippo-USA Championships.

Saikosho of each breed will compete for the Classic Supreme and Reserve Supreme award.

  • So, I was thinking of getting a collar like this for my dogs: http://www.hoganleather.com/store/products/2_________collars/page/3/28_rolled_leather_clip_slip_collar/

    Is that acceptable, or no?

@violet_in_seville - I dunno, we'll see how he does. My general disregard for dog shows kinda leans my toward "no", but we'll see.
  • @brada1878 - do you want me to send you a lead that's commonly used in Nippo shows? I have a black one that you can use, Shigeru hooked me up with it.
  • @shishiinu - Yea, that would be awesome! Then I'll return them after the show. Do they have a collar too?
  • They have a slip collar built into it.
  • @shishiinu Can you post a picture? I'm curious!
  • I will try, in going to send it to Brad tomorrow AM and I'm no where near it right now.
  • I hope the event goes well.

I'd love to go, but with things like my brother's baby coming soon, then wedding there is no time to go to this event. :\

Maybe next year I'd love to meet kai ken someday.

So... now that I finally landed a solid job to make a living wage off of I can budget for things... like this show! I think it would be really cool to caravan it up with some of our many Floridians. I've never been to a dog show and this sounds like a great first show to check out, get to meet some more NK people, and then Ren can see her sister, mom, and humom :)

It's a 16 hour drive one way. Gas is around $500 round trip if basing on a flat 20mpg direct there and back, I figure another $50 for to-from show/room/bar/restaurant. It sounds very low-key for a show, which is cool, vs the other association shows where (based on my uneducated assumptions) there are tons of dogs all over the place.

I'm glad there's plenty of notice for this show. I'm classified as part-time even though I work full time hours, so the time off is no big deal. Worked out a pretty sweet gig where I'm part-time cafe cook and then work swim instruction/lifeguard for kids by appointment for the buku bucks, all at the same place.

It'd be pretty cool if @sjp051993 showed her to see how she does, even if it's a one-n-done or not at all (based upon Stacey's experience showing her of course). My first direct deposit should be this week and I swear I'm getting her registered in the proper places, promise! I know I'm a slacker in that department, but my hands were financially tied with the moves and lack of jobs :(

@hinata23 @sangmort @yandharr @zinja I know I'm forgetting some Floridians, I've been searching for that member google map.

@shishiinu @TheWalrus Do you have any idea where in Tokyo those are sold? That's my dad's main route, besides Brazil, that he flies to and usually have a spare 12 hours to hang out between flights. If he's not flying there again this month, then he will for sure next month. I can ask him and it probly wouldn't be a big deal to pick up a few collars if people are willing to PayPal him. I'd get one with a slip in a heartbeat.
  • There's directions online on how to make them and I believe there's is a thread on here with the directions. You can also ask Shigeru (@thewaltus) and he might be able to point you in the right place.
  • @cezeig - With Fate in his current state no way we could make it up there. Plus we have all the reptiles & the birds...would have to have someone come watch them, as well as, Wraith & Aggro, not the easiest thing lol. My in-laws would also be down here visiting then, so it's all just a big mess of can't do it.

Maybe the other FL's can go tho :) Wish we could. ~
