@BradA1878 would know for sure, but I think the Kai is not approved for AKC conformation events.

The NAKA usually hosts an all-breed UKC show. According to my search on the UKC website, they haven't hosted a show since Aug. 2011 and none are scheduled for 2013 yet.

If you enter a UKC all-breed show, try to find a friend who can show you the ropes. There's either lots of dead time while waiting for your ring time, or some moments of hustling if there are 2 shows in one day and they're running simultaneously. UKC is good about waiting for you though, unlike AKC where if you snooze you lose.

  • oh, god, no!-- nothing intense like that. no titles or points needed! All Id want out of going is to see what its like to show a dog, see breeds I like and know something about, and meet up with forum people. I dont want to sit through hours of toy breeds, terriers and herding dogs, or get in the way of people who are serious. I probably only have one shot at doing such a thing, due to expense and driving time, so before I decide whether & how far to bend myself to actually GO, I want to be as informed as possible.
  • Nippo is the most laid back. Best place for a newbie, plus the dog can be registered with any registry. NAKA typically hold UK all-breed shows. We did not have a show last year and will not be having one this year. @Wrylybrindle - you can message me if you want to talk more about the Nippo show. Kai are not approved for AKC conformation events yet.
  • @WrylyBrindle from the other responses, I say come to the NIPPO show! Plus I want to meet the brindle pack. Or at least whichever ones you bring. >.>
  • At most it will be Juno and Matsu. :)

(Sage would love to meet you but only at our house- he doesn't do 'away from home' or "unfamiliar dogs" well at all, but he does like to love on all visitors. Ask @JessicaRabbit - I think she's the only one here who's made out with, I mean, met- Sage.) ;)

I will have to see if I can pull funding together, and maybe a (human) co-pilot/hitchhiker/kai wrangler to share the ride/room. It looks fairly unlikely at the moment, but maybe if enough freelance work comes in by then I can swing it...

If Brad makes it to the NIPPO show I will be curious to see if Matsu remembers Uncle Kishin.

Finally got a look at my Syllabi and classes are over May 2nd so I am coming to the show and Brindlebutt is coming with me!. So I know everyone has said it is in the hotel it was in 2011 (baymont inn) but do we have confirmation of this as I am going to reserve a room while I have Fellowship book money to blow.

Also if anyone wants to share a room I'm friendly, not a serial killer, and bringing a very cute, smart, if slightly stranger sketchy (but dog approved and sketchy in the sense she isn't going to run up and say hi and gives her regal approval by sniffing an outstretched hand, but is cool with stranger presence right there and busy public places) spayed Kai with me.
  • I have emailed Maggi and Debbie with the hotel to confirm, will let you know.
  • @cdenney
    Hi Claire,
This is the correct hotel. We will be doing the puppy sweeps on Friday and regular show on Sat. The show will be held Mother's Day weekend this year. We have a block of rooms at a special rate so please call the hotel to make reservations. When reserving a room the block is held under The Colonial Shiba Club (or just let them know you are with the dog show). Look forward to seeing you!
    Debbie
  • Thanks @poeticdragon calling now!

Booked for the 9 th and 10th!
  • I think if you want to place in the NIPPO show you must have a NIPPO registered dog. So KKA folks might want to register their dogs with NIPPO too.
  • For the classic you do not have to be Nippo registered to place and earn points.
  • I think if you want to place in the NIPPO show you must have a NIPPO registered dog. So KKA folks might want to register their dogs with NIPPO too.
@brada1878 - Wouldn't that forfeit the KKA registry since (if I remember correctly) KKA doesn't allow dual registry?
  • I wouldn't mind sharing a room with someone and splitting the costs, though two of my pups are picky about what dogs they get along with (but that's what crates are for). I'd want to book a room either way, but would rather not take a room from someone who is actually showing.
  • @cdenny - As of right now, I do not have any races scheduled that weekend, so I might be able to go and bring my Inus. :) If it works out, we can definitely carpool.

I will look into it this weekend and discuss it with the other half to make sure he did not have any plans for that weekend. It has been way too long since we had a forum meetup!!!
  • @sunyata awesome! let me know. or perhaps caravan if the girls dont get along. can you show either of them?
  • @cdenny - Nope, both of them are spayed. Bella is from questionable background (BYB or mill) and Nola (who might have been a decent prospect) has some major health issues. But they can definitely watch and have fun!

  • I was googling info on the NIPPO Classic because I thought I remembered something similar to Brad's memory.

I found this result pdf from 2010.

    http://www.shibaclassic.com/ClassiccatResults.pdf

On page 15, it says "NIPPO/USA championships not awarded in Kai or Shikoku."

So Kai/Shikoku/JA of any registry can compete and place, but the point system and NIPPO/USA CH does not apply to these breeds? Or did things change in 2011?
  • They were not award champion titles due to not having a minimum of 5 entered. A champion was award in Kai at the last show held. Tora is not Nippo registered, but she still has all her points that she has earned so far. The dogs do not have to be Nippo registered. The bob winner and opposite sex winners are award champion titles if there are 5 of a breed entered. If not it is up to the judge. Regardless, if you place in your class, you earn points. Points add up to a champion title as well.
  • We'll be there and showing a shiba but we'll be driving (happy to be a cheerleader when the shibas aren't onstage).
  • How many attendees are there for this? Also how many spectator dogs or are they discouraged? Shoot how many competitors for the non shibas?
  • Spectator dogs are welcome. They just ask they all be leashed and behave. Non-shiba participation has slowly been growing. There is on average close to 50 or more Shibas. I will have 3-4 Kai there. I have not decided if I am entering Tora or not.
  • Cool thanks!
  • Ok, I booked my room. I plan to bring Akashi and Kishin, and maybe a female.
  • Woot! Akashi and Kishin!
  • Yay! I gets to meet Akashi and Kishin
  • Awesome!!!! I am sure Ritsu will be happy to see you!
  • Well, if Ritsu is going to be there... :-D

I am still trying to work out the details to make sure that it will be financially feasible for us to come up. But hopefully we can work it out!
