  • This one started to consider US trip :P.
  • LoL, of course Kishin would do well, he's a very handsome fellow but also it's not like there are many Kishu in the US at the moment.

Good judges will withhold placements if there aren't dogs that meet their level of expectation. It's not an automatic 1st for Kishin. Nami the colored Kishu would have a better shot with her triangular eyes and small ears.
  • Hmm seems do-able if i don't have any tests the week after or that friday. So like how do you handle at a nippo show? I always see the pics of the dogs standing still. Its a 13+ hr drive for me. Would be great to meets forum peeps. I have arashi now so i could show if i knew what was going on lol.
  • Here is the website for the show, there is a link on there to an explanation of how the NIPPO style showing works: http://www.shibaclassic.com/

Okay so I figured out my plan. I'm going to Japan May 3rd - 6th. We leave Thursday night and get back Monday night. I will go with a friend of mine so that I have someone to share the experience with. My mom will drive my truck with my dogs to Maumee. She'll leave Monday morning. I'll catch a flight to Denver when I get back and meet up with my mother there. We will be in Chicago to pick up a dog on Thursday and should check in to the hotel the show is at Thursday night. We'll drive back from Ohio on Sunday and take a more leisurely route over 5 or 6 days.

So I guess I can be a part of a caravan from the southwest, I just might be delayed in joining the group.
  • So perhaps I am thinking depending on how my class schedule goes on taking some vacay and wandering up to this show in May and bringing Sachi just for exposure. Would anyone from the mid-east region care to caravan with me?

Virginia! My route to Ohio traditionally takes me through western MD, a bit of pa and wv before finally breaching Ohio near Cleveland.
  • Well, I'd love to be there, but it will all come down to my work situation at that time. If I go I would take Kishin and a Kai or two (Akashi and Nori would be my guess right now).
  • I heart Akashi.
  • me toos! He is what made me fall head over heels for kais.
  • I think I can come!! With my new pup in tow too... :)
Ohio is about 5 hours away from Toronto. Absolutely do-able. My pup might be around 4-5 months at that time. Is he too young? It might be fun to enter him in the show, but I don't want to be the loser newbie who ruins the show for everyone. Is this newbie friendly? :)
It would be awesome to meet everyone.
  • Its very newbie friendly and he wont be too young. Depending on the age categories NIPPO uses (I'm not sure) he may be in the same class as Kyuubi and Angi. Either way after the show I'm sure the puppies will all enjoy playtime together! :D
  • So in the interest of making reservations, where is it being held, or where is the info site so I can make arrangements?
  • I was told its at the same place as 2011:

    http://www.baymontinns.com/hotels/ohio/maumee/baymont-inn-and-suites-toledo-maumee/hotel-overview

The site hasn't been updated for 2013 yet, I was told this in an email.
  • Bringing Akashi may not be fair to the other Kai owners. :P

    (I'm joking)
  • but, but, but, it is akashi...
  • Brad, bring him. I would be more than happy to show him for you.
  • Excuse me, I misspoke. When I originally posted this thread the site hadn't been updated for 2013. But now it appears to be, although the information is a bit scarce.

  • Still same location. I am sure if I look at home I can find the age breakdowns.
  • @brada1878 - I challenge Akashi by wanting to take Kitora!!! hahahaha Then we'll see what's fair! :))

http://www.shibaclassic.com/files/NippoClassicJudgingPgm2011 lists the classes from the 2011 show. It varies by breed.

    Shiba
    Yochiken 2-4 months
    Yoken 4-7 months
    Waka Inu I 7-12 months
    Waka Inu II 12-18 months
    Soken 18-30 months
    Seiken 30+ months

Kai, Shikoku (Maybe all medium breeds?)
    Yochiken 2-5 months
    Yoken 5-8 months
    Waka Inu I 8-14 months
    Waka Inu II 14-22 months
    Soken 22-34 months
    Seiken 34+ months

    Akita
    Yochiken 2-6 months
    Yoken 6-10 months
    Waka Inu I 10-16 months
    Waka Inu II 16-24 months
    Soken 24-36 months
    Seiken 36+ months

The other two medium breeds are not listed in the doc because none were entered in the show.

For me, I'll have two Yochiken (Angirasu and Kyuubi, 6.5 months), one Waka Inu II (Mosura, 21 months), one Soken (Ghidora, 27 months), and one Seiken (Bijo, many many months). I'm happy that it worked out they're all in different classes. However, I'll still need someone to help handle my dogs for the best of breed if there isn't any other Akita competition....

@jellyfart should come out with Toki (19 months) and show him in Mosura's class. :)

I can help you for best of breed if you can possibly help with a kai for best of breed. If I enter everyone they would each be in their own class.
  • Wow this sounds super cool! Would love to bring Leo, but I don't know how he'd do (I don't mean showing, I mean just hanging out. He gets a bit overwhelmed if there are too many people/dogs around).

But....it's at the end of the semester, around grading time, so realistically probably won't happen, but it sure would be fun!
  • I spoke with Maggi again. Entry forms wont be available until April, but the site should be updated then with all the details.

Obviously I don't have a dog (at least not a Japanese one :P) but... This just across the state line from me, essentially (well okay, it's an hour south. Still...). I may have to try to come watch!! Obviously depending on my schedule at the time but if I'm around... I may have to drive down !
  • Hypothetically, if one was a curious person with an intact KKA kai (registered AKC FSS) who might like to go learn and show a dog one time to try it out, would it be a better idea to try to go to NIPPO Classic or go to the NAKA (Kai Assoc.) show? Is the NAKA show an all breed UKC show or an AKC show?
  • I don't know anything about the NAKA show, but I will say that the NIPPO Classic is very low key and newbie friendly. I presume from the name (North American Kai Association?) that the latter is not an all breed show, so that may be a consideration if you want to see other Nihon Ken and forum members. On the other hand, if you want to earn titles and points in something official maybe NAKA is better if its UKC/AKC.
