That is awesome Pam. Keep your positive attitude! It will NOT be easy when you get the call that she has an application approved for her... but she is meant for great things and you helped her get there (this is what I get told anyway, and I believe it).
And it is true, you do kind of know when you find the right shiba, it all seems to fit, they cuddle in their first or second week, they are ok playing with toys, they snark but they lick and make up - much like Ryu and Chloe :)) - but you'll know. It seemed predestined for us to find Tsuki and Kitsune, he is the cream in her coffee, the pb for her jelly, the marrow in her bone :)

    awww how poetic!!!

We already have our next foster lined up to come when Chloe finds a home. The founder of the rescue is keeping her until then. She's a black and tan puppy. We will be fostering her with the intent to adopt her unless we feel she still isn't the one. I didn't want to bring it up because I don't want to jinx it but I hope she and Ryu hit it off!

Aww Pam that is so cool! How old is the black and tan girl?

She's about 3 months old right now and she's hanging out with her litter mates at the rescue founder's house. That could be a good thing for us right? I'm hoping she'll learn some valuable puppy rules :)

How adorable! Well Im sure Chloe will find an amazing home and we will keep fingers and paws crossed that this little black and tan girl is "the one" for Ryu! Hopefully she will learn lots of puppy lessons, although I think Sake knows lots of stuff in the manners and rules department and she still kept me up until 3 am last night going puppy crazy...sigh, the joys of puppy hood.

Pam about the fly biting....I would have the vet check her ears and swab for infection while she is under. Sometimes a deep ear infection is not easily seen during a regular visit. I know you mentioned that Chloe was a little stinky and that could be a tip off. Ear problems can cause behavior issues.

Also note that many times dogs that are kenneled with lots of dogs develop compulsive disorders. If she is stressed she may exhibit more fly catching behaviors. from the video I noticed that she also snaps and then begins to groom herself as a self calming behavior, which may also indicate compulsion.

In looking at your videos, I noticed that Ryu can be a bit of a pest exhibiting puppy mouthing behavior toward Chloe, not knowing when to leave her alone. These may trigger some increased behaviors seen in Chloe. It also could be that her snapping triggers Ryu to want to play since he is not understanding what she is doing. Maybe a combination of both could be of issue.

If she exhibits snapping all day long and you think they are seizures then that should not be left, it is considered serious.

In any case talk to your vet.

    Good luck
    Snf

    Patrice,

Now that you mention it, Chloe didn't have any fly-biting episodes AT ALL yesterday. I wonder if it really is Ryu setting her off. Since he was at daycare and the only time they were around each other was in the evening and Ryu was beat so he wasn't trying to play with her.....Although, she was fly-biting while we kept them separated as well.....I'm going to monitor her today and see when and where she does the fly-biting.

I will definitely tell the vet to swap her ears during her spay - maybe she can find something of interest.

They look quite happy to be sharing you, Pam!

Oh wow, double Shiba cuddles! That's an impressive feat. Chloe looks like a professional cuddler. I guess she's making up for lost time. :-)

Yep, I think she's competing with Piglet for the master snuggler :)

Last pic looks like Chloe's pushing Ryu away because she wants you all to herself! Either that or she's trying to push you both off the couch.

I'm sure she's trying to take over the couch :) She is becoming quite the couch-potato.

And I'm done for. We definitely have to get Ryu a sister. Look how loving he is!

And in other Chloe news, she play-bowed today!!!! I was shocked. She did it to me and kind of looked like...."Ok, I see Ryu doing this but I don't exactly know what it does...am I doing it right?" LOL

And someone expressed interest in her today at Lowes. I took Chloe along while we picked up a few things and this lady is supposed to fill out an application soon. Is it wrong that I want to do a full Top Secret Clearance on everyone who's interested?

    How sweet!

I'm excited on the play bow - it's great progress.

I would want a full background, references, dna sample, etc.

This is the first time I've let all the pictures load (I'm borrowing fast internet while I'm in town). Gotta say - Chloe is an absolute sweetheart! I would get attached to her so quickly.

w00t at play bowing!! Nothing wrong with wanting the best for her :)

Errik really wants to bring Chloe home lol. He's in love.

same here - I am very very picky when screening applicants for our fosters!

Chloe's smile melted my heart :)

    Pam -

I didn't read this whole thread, but thanks for taking in a foster. It looks like things are going well. From those last sets of pictures, it looks like Chloe might have found her forever home already. You will have to be really strong to avoid that foster failure bug. Look how well she and Ryu get along!

    BIG DAY!!!!

So, good news, bad news, and GREAT NEWS!!

Good news: Chloe played with a toy today!!! It only took two weeks and daily demonstrations by Ryu but she finally picked up a toy and played with it today! She even went for the "shake and kill"!!! I was so proud.

Bad news: She's toy aggressive. lol Imagine that, her first freaking day acknowledging a toy and she doesn't want anyone else to have it. Ryu did beautifully though. She pretty much snatched it up from right underneath him and he didn't even flinch. He moved toward her with his tail up and in a play stance but she growled at him. And continued to growl whenever he got too close. So, toys are off-limits now. As much as I loved seeing her play with them, I decided to put them away while they are in the same room. I'll bring some out with they are separated but for now, I don't want any squabbles over stuffed giraffes.

    Here some videos and pictures:

Sorry this one is so shaky but I had to occupy Ryu with my other free hand

And the GREAT NEWS!!!!!! Someone applied to adopt Chloe! However, this person still needs to have a home visit completed and she's about 7 hours away from me. So, unless I can find someone in Chicago to do a home visit, it looks like I'll be driving 7 hours this weekend! hehe I'm so excited but also, trying not to get my hopes up!
  • edited November -1
OMG Pam! That is amazing! (minus the aggression), but how great for Miss Chloe! I hope she finds the perfect forever home! YAY YAY YAY! WOOT WOOT! CONGRATS CHLOE!

Toy playing is fantastic!!!!!!!!! Great news about the app - do we have any forum members close to Chicago?
  • edited November -1
Wow! That is great that she played with a toy! And I bet she will get better with the toy hogging.

And YAY for her getting an application in! That is awesome. Hopefully the home visit will be great and everything will work out well for her. Keep us updated!

Thanks guys! I was trying so hard not to jump up and down and scare her LOL

LJ - no idea but I just looked up the rescue's website and this is what it says "Currently the majority of our volunteers are in Chicago, IL and the surrounding suburbs" LOL shouldn't be very hard then!!

Stuffed giraffe? more like disemboweled giraffe.:)

Congratulations on all fronts for the little princess! I love that pic you have of her playing with the toy and Ryu sitting up on the ottoman grimacing.

    Great news Pam!

Pam, if she is only growling that isn't too bad at all. Too me toy aggressive is lunging and biting. All of my dogs will growl if another dog tries to take/play with their toys. It is how she reacts if he TAKES the toy. How is she if you take the toy? That is much more important when it comes to adopting her out. IMO
  • edited November -1
that is good news about the applicant!! I hope it all works out for Miss Chloe... and your family when the time comes, too.

the toy thing - it happens, it is so new to her to play and want to kill all the toys, good job taking them away to prevent squabbles! Does she let you take the toys away from her mid-kill?
  • edited November -1
Pam - What rescue are you working with? I know some people in the Chicago who might be interested in doing a home visit for you (if it's ok with the rescue). They all have volunteered with other Shiba organizations over the years and it never hurts to ask. Let me know.

hmmm -- all good questions. I didn't think to take the toy away today (lol because I was too happy that she was playing with it) but I will try tonight.

Brandon - it is the SIRA - Shiba Inu Rescue Association (www.savingshibas.com) I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem with anyone wanting to help out! I just tried to convince Tim into taking a Chicago weekend trip with me and Chloe - not going very well lol

Oh yea, Jess, thanks for the clarification on growling vs. lunging/biting. I'll be the first to admit that I get freaked out at the first growl. I need to toughen up :)
