I have to be reminded sometimes too. Piggy went after Miko (Piggy just got her shots and Miko stepped on her injection site) and I FREAKED. My behaviorist, Brad and two of my girlfriends all had to remind me that considering they were licking each other seconds later, and neither was hurt even slightly that it was an argument and not a fight.

We are protective of our kids and don't want to think that they could hurt each other.

But I try to remember, my sister and I beat the hell out of each other as kids. Most sibling do. As long as they are squabbles and you defuse them quickly, it actually helps them build a dynamic.

Oh you are working with Beth and Aimee's new rescue. We used to be on the board of directors together at MSIR. Beth still lives in the Chicago area, Aimee might be who is driving the dog up to you from Florida, as she goes to school down there now. They both know a lot of people in Chicago too, I'm sure Beth could help you find someone to do the home visit.

Weekend Chicago trips are great. There are so many great places to eat in that city.

Wow - small world Brandon! I think they are great - they have been super helpful with this whole process. I bet they could find someone to do the home visit but I was thinking that maybe it would be better if the PRHs could actually meet Chloe? I don't know, I'm so new at this. Plus, that would get us out of St. Bob for a weekend :D

Oh, and Aimee is SUPER sweet - she's been e-mailing me pictures of Sango who is cute as a button :)
  • edited November -1
Hehe I saw those pictures of Sango Pam, just adorable. It's funny because my Picasa preference is never to send me an email so what does it do? Sends me an email when you uploaded new pics lmao.

An observation - I think Chloe is the boss. My reasons:

    1. Ryu grooms her....endlessly. Didn't we discuss dogs who lick other dogs (clean their ears, lick their mouths, etc) as being submissive? He will lick her mouth a few times a day and she just stands there with her head tilted toward the ceiling. If we're cuddling on the couch, he'll clean her ears.
    2. When she growls, Ryu backs up - like 5 feet. LOL He doesn't even try to go for what she has (whether its a piece of fuzz or if she's just growling because she's tired of his presence)

Could I be reading too much into this? :)

LOL sorry Rina!! I'm constantly adding new pictures too lol
  • edited November -1
Yes Chloe is in charge. It's very possible that Ryu is a submissive little guy who just wants to be everyones buddy.

Yes it would be great if the PRH could meet Chloe first, sometimes distance makes that an issue. I don't blame you for wanting out of Misery though.

Yes Beth and Aimee are great, they are very dedicated people.

I can only imagine. I can't imagine having that kind of heart to start your own rescue. Thank God for those people! :D

Yes, Misery is quite miserable. :) It was beautiful for the first month and then the leaves fell and now it's just dreary. However! We saw snow for the first time in 5 years!!!! That was amazing.

It's snowing here for the first time in three days!

I'm having some serious snow envy over here.

ETA: Oh I don't mind the pictures Pam, I just find it funny when the email says "to stop receiving emails go here to change your preferences" and I'm like..to what???

Yuck Yuck Yuck I hate the snow.

Miso is super sumbissive too, and just wantes to please everyone and be their buddy. Sake is "in charge" at our house now.

chloe could be the boss now with Ryu, like Brandon said Ryu could just be super submissive (but didn't he act out around moose?).
The 'top dog' position is a very fluid one in my limited experience, Tsuki was always making Kitsu her b*tch but then when Hachi came in, she just took over in one effortless rapid sweep. Now that she is gone, Tsuki and Kitsu are just coexisting but its clear that Tsuki still looms over him in most aspects. If we let Hanzo freely interact with them, I'm sure by his behaviors we would see both Tsuki and Kitsu submitting to his crankiness. Its a constantly changing dynamic with short term residents I think.

Yes, top dog is very fluid. I guess I shouldn't have generalized Ryu so much, but I know that he does very well at the dog park and at Shiba meet ups.

    Its pretty fascinating. :)

About Moose, his owners and I have differing views. Of course, I'm always going to be on the defense, saying "Sorry about Ryu - he needs to learn his manners" but they insist that Moose instigates things. For instance, if we are playing catch outside, Ryu will get the ball even though Moose is faster. Moose will get there first but he will chicken out at the last minute allowing Ryu (who is twice his size) to get the ball. But then once Ryu has the ball, Moose will try to take it out of his mouth, causing Ryu to drop the ball and bark in Moose's ear who then runs and hides. All this happens in two nanoseconds so how can we really tell who is bossing whom? For the most part, Ryu could just walk past Moose and Moose will growl. But Ryu won't just let it go like he does with Chloe. Maybe because Chloe is a foxy lady and Moose is a grumpy old man?

I know, I know :) I love her but with our lifestyle, I think it would damage her more than help her. Not knowing where we're going from year to year.....The possibility of little children in the near future, I think she would be happier with a small family with no kids... but they are quite the pair, aren't they? :)
  • edited November -1
OMG Pam. How could you possibly separate them? They look like peas in a pod. :-)

    Guys!!! LOL

This is totally up to you... we just see what you are SHOWING US!!! But someone might fill out an application that is a total upgrade from what she has even now with you, and that would be perfect, right?

Your reasons are understandable, but know that I adopted Kitsune not intending on having kids because he was surrendered for not liking the new baby his owners had (whatever that means) which was fine with me and now... well, we're gonna make it work somehow.

All of you have to be in agreement about her, not just Ryu. How does Tim feel?

Very true, if we don't find the PERFECT home for her, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Tim's exact words are "If we had our own house, I'd keep her." Meaning (1) she would be perfect for US, but with having roommates who are *kinda* loud and love to have people over - she wouldn't be as comfortable as she would be in a calmer household. I truly believe she would have come a longer way without our male roommate. But we have to make do with our situation and try to help her as much as possible. And (2) we don't know how many times or where we will be moving at least for the next 4-6 years. We got lucky with Ryu handing his overseas flight so well, but I'm a little nervous to do that to an older, cautious mill dog. With that kind of trauma, I'm not totally confident she will bounce back.

But then again, we can only screen homes that are interested and if no one fits the bill...... well, 2009 will be a year full of hard decision-making :)

Just to warn you with my experience though Pam. I've moved Dahmer back and forth for the past 2 years and all my animals have been moved at least twice if not more. I've noticed that with every move, they get worse at adjusting to the new change. So Ryu was great the first move but as the moves keep going on, he might take it harder and harder.

Very true. Also, Ryu was only 11 months and probably could adapt easier since he was so young.... I wonder how the next 15 years will be since we just re-signed with the Army for another term. I guess I can't base my theory on just age alone since Ryu will be older during most of our moves as well....hmmm... I guess we just have to feel it out.
