    yay for Nemo...

I swear dogs and children ALWAYS behave better when mom and dad ARENT there.

YAY NEMO! I wonder if a neutral territory may have helped? He may not claim the dog park as his own?
    Nonetheless YAY!
  • edited November -1
Well he was at Turi and Finn's place, and I know that he thinks of it as his own. He is family there, I'd be kind of shocked if he didn't think that it was his in, his Shiba mind. I know that he thinks the dog park is his, as he used to gate guard all the time, well when we went to the park during hours that sane minded people are there.

Jess you are right, they do always behave better when mom and dad aren't there. However at the end of his dog park days, Melissa had him there once while I was on vacation and he still acted like a shit head. That was probably 18 months ago or more. It's been a long time since I have introduced him to many new dogs.

Awesome!!! YAY for Nemo and Brandon!!!

It has been awhile since I gave a Nemo update, and that is because things have been going well. He hasn't injured himself, been sick, or tried to attack anything lately. I have some pictures of him with Whiz from September that I just haven't gotten around to editing yet. I hope to soon, but I've been busy, and busy taking pictures.

Monday is Nemo's yearly check up and shots, maybe he wont freak out really badly, but he probably will. Oh well, at least it will only be a few minutes and then it will be over.

Also with the cooler Fall weather coming in this week, he has a little spring in his step. He loves this time of the year, it gives him the crazies. I can't wait for big leaf piles for him to tear through. This weather also brings out a bit of the naughty, I caught him chewing on the TV remote yesterday morning. It was a half hearted effort though, as he didn't even leave any teeth marks.
  • edited November -1
Hahaha. I'm glad you rescued that poor remote. Poor thing was defenseless. ;-)

Good luck at you checkup Nemo. Be brave!

I was just thinking about this thread the other day, wondering if we would get some Nemo spam soon.

Glad he has been a good boy. :o)

Vet check up went HORRIBLE! He was off his freakin' rocker today. She couldn't put the stethascope to him without him freaking out. Couldn't complete the exam or give him his shoots. They gave me some doggy version of Xanax to give him before the next visit. We go back on Friday, hopefully the stuff will chill him out. I have a couple decent scrapes on my arms from his claws as he flailed about.

Couldn't come even close to getting the muzzle on him, he wouldn't hold still for a second, kept backing into the corner, standing up and swinging his paws at me. Never tried to bite though, he is good that way. I felt awful for him, even when they (vet, vet tech) left the room he would not cooperate. He got a good work out though, I'll tell you that.

I love this dog so much, but sometimes he can be such a pain in the ass. If I ever meet the people who had him when he was young, I'll knock their teeth out.

Wow Brandon, sounds like one intense trip! Poor little guy, I bet he is going to sleep well. Would he be any better with mommy?
Hope the xanax will work, that just not fair that he goes through that. Im so glad he has you guys. I think someone deserves some extra love and treats!
I feel the same way about how damaged Sasha is (going after her previous owners), but when at the vet she zones out and doesnt even flinch at a shot.

Oh man, poor Nemo. I'm sorry to hear he had such a bad time today. Let me know how the Xanax goes. I'm considering asking for some to use when I clip Joey's nails. I've tried just about everything I can think of, but I always come out with nasty scrapes on my legs and arms and I've even gotten the anal glad treatment a couple of times. It was suggested I try clipping one nail a day until he began to tolerate it better, but that just seems to be worse. *sigh*

I will make sure to update you Dave. Nemo has never given me the anal gland treatment, but Turi does it everytime he goes to the vet.

The next dog we adopt is going to be a dog that loves everyone and is happy go lucky, what breed, I'm not positive, but that's the criteria. Then we will have one on each end of the spectrum. In the future I'm sure I'll take in another dog that has fear/anxiety issues, as they always tug on my heart strings, but it would be nice to go into the vet, get things done without coming close to tears, and go home.

Funny, my rescue dogs (Piglet and Moto) are perfect at the vet, have no problems with being groomed, and will let me do anything to them, my breeder dog (Miko) gets car sick, is afraid of buses, and squirms at all things new.

Poor Nemo. It was just not his day, it seems. Hopefully it will be better on Friday.
Kuma's a gem at the vet, he kisses her while she's doing nasty stuff to him, but Nyx is quite the devil. Although it's not the same thing, I can understand how you feel.

If you ever find the people that had him before, and you want some help, I pack a decent punch.

that sucks. Let us know how the Xanax goes..
A friend of mine gives her Cairn doggy Valium for thunderstorms and fireworks. She says it works.
Tsuki is a total drama queen who constantly poops right on the vet exam table. Once she poo'd and the vet started to read "Made in Thai..." I was like what? Apparently Tsuki ate the tag to something and it came back out, on the vet exam table. Total blast.

Oh Nemo, behave for your dad!

Let me know how the Xanax goes, it made Maui hallucinate and freak out. :o\

  • edited November -1
Oh, well that's not very settling Brad. It's not Xanax exactly though, I'll look at the pill bottle when I get home.
  • edited November -1
Maui is strange, our vet used to say he is "wired backwards", so I would not expect the same results as Maui. I'm just interested to see if it helps since it didn't work for Maui but it seemed like a great solution [for Maui].

alprazolam is the generic Xanax. Eva the cairn gets diazepam, generic Valium. They chose the valium because it works for anxiety on a complete physical level, whereas the xanax works more on the central nervous system. I've given a dog a benedryl to calm them down in an emergency.

But your vet (hopefully) knows best, and knows which tranquillizer would work best with Nemo for his next vet appointment.
  • edited November -1
Whizzer the Carin gets Diazepam. It kind of slows him down a bit during thunderstorms, but doesn't knock him out long enough sometimes. He gets two tablets, those terriers can be just nutty.

Yes the pills are Alprazolam. I hope it works too. Benedryl can make Nemo sleepy, but I'm not sure it would be enough to calm him at the vet.

You know how those with ADHD get basically the equivalent of speed?
    Maybe Maui needs speed!!

Oh man! Poor Nemo...and YOU! That vet visit must have been horrible. I'm not sure if Nemo has the same issues with new people like Ninja. But - when I go into the vet, I hand the vet tech Ninja's lead and have him take him into the exam room while I wait out in the waiting room. They say that Ninja is MUCH better without me and basically lets them do whatever they need without putting up any kind of fuss. They are able to pick him up and put him on the exam table, take his temp, look at his teeth, feel his body, and he even takes vaccines and bloodwork like a champ (no screaming). But, when i'm there, he starts growling and showing his teeth and tries to hide under chairs and tables and refuses to come out.

Next time, you might want to try that. Just a suggestion - it works for me and Ninja. Might work for you and Nemo too. Hope the Alprazolam works out for Nemo and that the next visit isn't so bad! Good Luck!

We have tried taking Nemo to a different room. They did that last year for his annual checkup, the vet tech came out with a bandage up and down her forearm. Apparently she got in the way of flailing Shiba claws. It took 4 people to give him his shots.

Where I live used to be very rural and we had vets that would do housecalls. The last years of my husky's life, my vet came out to the house to do the shots. Any possibility that you can find a vet that will make a house call so that it would be less stressfull on Nemo? Most of the vets that I know who do that have large animal care, hence the reason they tend to go offsite.
  • edited November -1
I think the vet I go to does housecalls. It's certainly something to consider. It at least takes one scary aspect out of the "multiple scaries" situation.

Let us know how it goes today Brandon! Im sending out peaceful shiba vibes to Nemo.
  • edited November -1
Oh crap...my days are all messed up being home....Its tomorrow...
Im sending good shiba vibes early...I think he can use them!
  • edited October 2008
Sorry I'm late on this Brandon. Mika and Keigo are not fond of the vet, but they certainly don't carry on like that. The most stressful part is being in the waiting room and keep them from other animals. They're usually better with other dogs at the vet than on our walks because they're so afraid of the vet! Actually, I think they both sense the fear in other animals, which makes them nervous.

edit: Hope your scrapes are all better.
  • edited November -1
Nemo stresses big time in the waiting room, usually he hides under the chair that I sit in. Usually he ignores the other animals and randomly tries to dart for the door.

My scrapes are healing up nicely, although I do have some new ones on my belly and chest from an over enthusiastic puppy at the humane society yesterday.
