Sometimes I use manual, sometimes auto. I think these were all shot with manual.

Ah, ok, yea... I have a very hard time getting my Auto focus to work with me. It works great with up-close thing or shots where there is not a lot of info in the background [behind the subject], but if there is a lot going on it just always defaults to infinity. That is why most of my hiking pics are all shot with no focus.

I have been practicing so that I can start using manual focus and get better results. Some of the pics I have taken I think would be really nice except for the focus issue.

The other thing I have a hard time with is holding the camera still when shooting in lower light... I guess I shake a lot and so I always end up with slightly blurred pics. :o\

There is only so much you can do about lowlight. You can up your ISO, you can shoot slightly underexposed and compensate in Lightroom or a similiar program, you can buy a faster lens, or you can get a tripod. Everyone shakes a lot, even when you don't think you are shaking, your muscles are constantly flexing to try and hold you still, that shows up in pictures.

Hiking, and landscape type shots can benefit from working on your manual focus skills. Just keep practicing, and taking time to compose. Also, shoot more than one shot.

I forgot to mention. While we were on vacation and Nemo was with his friends, he was a good boy. Rico Tubbs and Benetzio came over for a visit, and Nemo was again well behaved with them. From what I heard he even shared the futon with him.

Also twice recently we have been approached by off leash dogs and Nemo kept his cool, there was no attempt to attack the other dogs.

I'm not going to run him to the dog park to play or anything, but it seems that he might be mellowing about other dogs a bit.

That's great Brandon. It must make you feel good to know he does so well when you leave town. :-)

    That's really great news!

Nemo fits right in with our friends who he stays with. He adores their three year old who just loves Shibas. Rumor has it that Nemo would spoon/snuggle with Keanan (the three year old) on the couch, but anytime there was an attempt to photograph such a situation, Nemo quickly ran away. Nemo also buddied up with their 9 year old and apparently received daily belly rubs from him.

There was a dust up or three between Nemo and Turi, but they are brothers, that happens. A hand clap and a shout gets them to knock it off. It's a really great feeling to be able to know he is safe and well cared for when we leave town, or if for some reason (death, injury, whatever) we were no longer able to take care of Nemo, he would have a home.

thats an invaluable comfort to have someone you trust that can be there for your dog if you cannot be.

I'm glad he was so well behaved!

    That's really great to hear!

That's great, I was wondering how he did and who he was staying with while you were out of town.

That's really cute he spooned Keanan. lol

Wow! Thats such great news to hear about Nemo! I would have loved to see the snuggle pics with Keanan. Congrats to Nemo for being less dog reactive! ....maybe a new furbaby will be joining your pack in the near future ;)

I wish we were going to get another dog. It will be a few years while we are renting and I'm back in school.

Nemo is super handsome :) Brandon's awesome photography skills only help a little ;)

[ btw Brandon, how do you get such awesome lighting? & your photos are always SO clear ] ~
  • edited November -1
    beautiful! such a stud!

Osy - I use a Nikon SB-800 flash. In all of those shots, it's pointing straight up and bouncing off the ceiling. The 50mm lens can be very sharp where it is focused, other than that I'm not sure what you mean by clear.
  • edited December 2008
Sorry, when I said clear I meant sharp. ;)

Thanks for the explanation Brandon! I never realized what a big impact an external flash could make. [ as well as having a handsome model ;p ]~

I think that the perfect couple is Jazz and Nemo! Too bad they may kill each other. : (
    They are both so regal!
I LOVE Nemo!!!! He is the stud! How much does he weigh Brandon?
  • edited November -1
Great shots Brandon. Nemo looks great. He really is a beefcake. Do you use a diffuser on your flash?
  • edited November -1
Those two would look pretty cool together...provided they are separated by a glass wall.
  • edited November -1
Glass walls are so hard to photograph through too. Imagine if they did get along, the shit they would talk to other dogs...

Dave - I have a diffuser, but it was not on when I took those pictures.

No dog would come near, that's for sure!
