He's so cute!  Very nice photography work.

BTW - Tojo has pink nails.  Well, they're white but the quick makes them look pink.

yea, as usual - great pic. Nemo is cute - I dig the Nemo thread.  :c)

  • edited November -1
Love it as usual...He is such a beautiful red!

Yes he has pink nails, his rear ones have a bit of brown on them.  I got lucky with this picture.  I took it in December 2006.  He was on my parents couch gaurding the house (barking out the window) and took a break.  I just happened to be messing around with my camera and had it in my hands.  If I had got up to get the camera he would have moved.

Last night Whizzer came over.  Whizzer is a Carin Terrier and he is Nemo's best non-Shiba friend.  Whizzer will be with us for 9 days while his parents or on vacation.  It is always nice to have a friend for Nemo to play with.  They were crazy last night, Whizzer is a little energy ball.  Hopefully they can help to tire each other out, it might be to cold and stormy for a walk this evening and tomorrow morning (sub zero again).

Today is a big day for another reason.  It was three years ago today that we drove down to Rockford and met Nemo's foster parents at a gas station so that we could take him to his new home.  A week earlier we had driven to Chicago to visit him and realized that he was the dog for us.  He barked at us a lot and was obviously shy, and affraid of my boots, but he sat by us and took treats which was huge for him at that time.  We also got to pet him, apparently most people who wanted to adopt him didn't get to do that.  Nemo was not my "first choice" as a couple of other dogs got adopted before I could meet them.  However he was the right choice, and I really feel that we belong together.  We can meet Nemo's somewhat strange needs and he meets ours, he would not be the dog that all people are looking for.

Three years ago I didn't really know that much about dogs, or dog food, or dog care, or dog training.  However through the adoption process, and after adopting Nemo I have met some really amazing people and made some great friends who have pointed me in all of the right directions.  I've learned a ton about dog food, found out all of the good places to go for training in my area, and learned how to properly care for a dog.  Had I not gone through a rescue, I'm not sure I would have learned all of this stuff so quickly.  There were just so many caring people involved who wanted the best for Nemo.  We are still friends with his foster parents and take him to visit them in Chicago, and sometimes they come up to Madison to see him.

Adopting Nemo has also led to me being more involved in helping other dogs.  In the last 3 years I've been V.P. of a Shiba rescue, transport coordinator, home visit coordinator, and I now volunteer to socialize and walk dogs at the local humane society.  With some friends I have also put on a Shiba picnic 3 summers in a row, this year will be our 4th.  We have raised over $3,000 for dogs in need, and this last year we had a huge turnout of like 90 people and 100+ dogs.  All of this is possible because of Nemo, and how bringing him into my life has made me want to help others.

Nemo has also grown a lot over the last three years.  He is more outgoing and takes to people quicker, though not quickly.  He has bonded with many people and has a couple of houses that he can stay at when we have to go away.  He fits right in there and lets these people pet and love him.  Nemo has gained some manners and learned a few tricks, and I believe that he now really enjoys his life.  Just recently he has finally put it together that if he lays by us on the couch, we will rub his belly, or give him scratches the whole time he stays up there.

An unsocialized Shiba was maybe not a smart choice, and certainly was not an easy choice for a first dog (no dogs growing up either), but I am glad it is the route that I went.  Diving in head first has worked out for my benefit and Nemo's.  It is the start of lifetime of owning dogs, and I can't imagine a life without a dog.  He means as much to me as anyone, some people don't get it, but I don't care.  Nemo is not "just a dog", he is MY dog, my friend, and my faithful companion.

Maybe that was all a bit sappy, but I don't care.  I love my dog

Also.  I will be making Blueberry Pupcakes to celebrate.  Whizzer's birthday is also next week, so it works for him too!

Well happy Nemo day! He is lucky to have you, and you are lucky to have him.

I didn't realize he was your first dog - like you didn't even have one growing up. It seems the people that get Shibas as their first dogs are the ones that get sucked into the Shiba world the fastest... it's like hazing or something.

So, how did you come up w/ the name Nemo? Is it because he found his home, or you found him? Or do you have kids?

  • edited November -1

Do I have kids?  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.  My parents and in-laws only wish.  No kids ever.  I'm still a kid.

Nemo was given his name by the workers at the shelter/animal control office where he spent some time near Peoria, IL.  He and his brother were in and out of there a few times.  The final time, after his owners abandoned him and he was out on the streets for a bit, he stayed there for a few days.  Apparently he really took to a Nemo blanket that was in his kennel.  That's what they named him, the Shiba rescue person who first took him in didn't change it, his foster parents didn't change it, and we didn't either.  He knew it was his name by the time we got him so it stuck.

Kids...I actually didn't put an offer on a house last week because the realtor was so pushy that "give it another year or two, you and your husband will get rid of your dogs and have kids" I won't tell you how I responded because I guarantee I will offend someone. But my realtor reemed her out after I left.

You would never guess you are a first time owner. You took to it like a fish to water....ha hahahah .... get it... fish... Nemo... hee hee

Okay I am not only a nerd but a lame one.

    More coffee now.

Jen and I are on the same page as you guys - no kids. I'm really not a 'kid' guy, I just don't like them. They make me uncomfortable.

I leave the kid making up to my sis - she has 2 now....

I actually know Rick who played his brother in law.  He is a dick but the show is hysterical. I was sad to see it didn't go on longer.

  • edited November -1
oh really? yea, it was really funny - rick was the real crazy guy right (he was naked a few times)?
  • edited November -1
More of him than ANYONE ever needed to see for sure!

Well the "pup"cakes were a big hit with the dogs.  They were easy to put together too.  Here are some pictures:

First the (dog) food porn shots.

And pictures of the dogs enjoying them.  I would have taken more photos (well I have a few that suck) but my batteries in my flash were low, you'd think they could have built an indicator on there for how much I paid for the thing.  Anyhow.  I got a few good ones.

    Nemo says "for me?"

  • edited November -1

    Thanks.

And that's ok, I love Louis CK and would kill for another season of Lucky Louie.  I like Patton Oswalt also, I'm working on creating a lunch gun.

  • edited November -1

    Sorry I am a master at non-sequetors.

Lunch gun... why not just have a failure pile in a sadness bowl.

Here are a few pictures from the last few days:

Whizzer proudly stands by his bowl/toy (it's a love affair):

Nemo steals the tennis ball from Whizzer.  Nemo is never interested in a tennis ball unless another dog wants it, then it's his.  Then he gets bored:

Hehe. I absolutely adore the last one. I can't tell you how many times Lucy will want so badly to play with a toy but just be so exhausted that she ends up sleeping on it. I find it adorable. I wish I could get it on camera but she usually wakes up when I go get it and then moves to the couch to be more comfortable.

Btw,  I like the pictures a lot. What camera are you using?

  • edited November -1
I use a Nikon D50.  Those were all taken with the help of the Nikon SB-800 Speed Flash.
  • edited November -1
That's a very Nice camera! and it Takes beautiful pictures.

Brandon...How did you get Nemo to not eat his quiet spot?  We just got them and we didnt put it on Niko Tuesday night because we wanted to watch her with it.  Chad put it on her Wed morning and it was destroyed in a few minutes...needless to say Chad was not doing a good job watching her.  I want that so bad cause she has so many tags and gets so tarnished on the fur....
