There was Shiba screams (super loud, terrified Shiba screams), fear induced defication, a dew claw snapped at the quick while scrambling on tile, and one shot administered.
I don't know what to do to make it better. I could barely keep from crying. The vet was really great about it, we talked about different options (none really great for Nemo). The last resort would be to give him a quick acting injected sedative, but he would still need one shot. He got no exam today. The Xanax had no effect at all. My vet said if I kept him on a heartworm preventative all year she will just write me a prescription for Interceptor so we don't need to do a blood draw.
Nemo is doing just fine at home, he was fine as soon as he was safe in the car. I'm still stressed, and feel mentally exhausted.
Seriously, sounds like the hard stuff is in order. I'm sorry things went so badly for Nemo.
Perhaps you should start taking Nemo to the vet on occasion just to say hi? I think Romi did (or does) that with Ninja. You could start by just taking him to the waiting room and then leaving after a few minutes. And then build up to an exam room. And then some interaction with staff. Etc. Joey's vet offered that to us when I took him in for his nails this week.
That is a good suggestion Dave, I forgot we did that with Niko when she was a pup to avoid vet fear. She got treats (although I DOUBT Nemo will ever be in any mood for treats there) and they loved all over her. Niko now LOVES the vet.
I'm not sure that trying to desensitize him to the waiting room would work well, and I'm also not sure if they would always have an exam room open for me to just hang out. I believe that I could get him to be comfortable in those rooms, but once you add in needles, and some poking and prodding, everything changes, the comfort level would disappear. Also Nemo will eat treats from me at the vet, he will always eat a treat, but he does it almost without recognizing what he is doing. He just takes whatever I hand him and gulps it down quick while in a state of fear.
It doesn't really calm the mind, but it does relax the body and kinda knock a dog out a bit. Might help take some of the fight out of him.
I wouldn't use Ace regularly, I think its a bit cruel since the dog is 100% alert while on it, but in this case it may prevent him from hurting himself.
We used it on Ahi after her surgeries. She eventually became immune to it, but it took a LOT for that to happen.
This last one is my favorite. It's like Nemo is saying "Dad, are you seriously laying on the sidewalk taking pictures of me? Stop it, what if people see this?"
Wow Brandon, he looks great in those fall colors! I think fall is my favorite time of year. Nemo looks so content!
Love your commentary on the last pic!
What do you think about the easywalk harness? I've been having so many problems with the gentle leader that I'm thinking about abandoning it for the easywalk.
Jesskia - Thanks. Nemo can be pretty serious sometimes, but he can be very goofy too.
Steph - It's the lens, not the camera that gives these photos their characteristics. I was using my 50mm 1.8.
Dave - I love the easywalk harness. I used to just walk Nemo on his collar, but sometimes his hunting urges get the best of him, and he would slam into the end of his leash, I figured that couldn't be good for his neck. He walks very nicely on this harness.
Thanks for the comments, I agree Nemo is a good looking dog.
You're right when you say Nemo is a good looking dog! Very much so! I'm with Dave about Autumn being probably my favourite time of year, the temperature gets nice and the colours are simply great. Plus I love to walk on dry leaves :-) Great photos as usual, there aren't many lenses that can beat the depth of field of that 50mm! I think my favourites are the 2nd and the 3rd.
Fall colors fit so well with Nemo! Great pictures as always. Re Nemo and the vet, does he get freaked out when you take him other places or is it just the vet? Re Acepromazine, we had a very bad experience with it with one of our Malamutes- triggering aggression. I've heard from other Mal and Sibe owners of similar behaviour after Ace was given. I'm so late on this, but am so sorry about Nemo's siezure. The only consoling thing is that dogs don't seem to have the emotional upset about them that people do. Hang in there Nemo!

How did he do?

Have you ever tried Ace?

Brad, what is Ace?

Hang in there Nemo!
You are right about the seizures, Nemo is never upset after they are over. Within minutes it is as if it never happened.
Question: Do you use manual focus?
