LOL. Today when we came back home form getting Nat at work, they came up because I had to go to a building meeting. It took me 20 minutes or so. When I came back I got a smaller version of this greeting.
Hehe. You know what I didn't notice the first time? How he ran directly past Nat as if she didn't even exist to come see you. Do you think he heard your voice before she opened the door or do you think he could smell you?
It's his MO. He always runs to whoever is at the back first. Normally I open the door and when I do I move to the right so he has the space to go sniff Nat first and then come to me. The only difference is that on normal days he stops for like a second to smell who's at the front. Maybe the cause for what happened this time is he heard my voice or he smelled me.
Yesterday, I found a bald spot on Kuma's left hind leg, about an inch in diameter. Took him to the vet and she did a culture to confirm her fungus suspicion. Well have an answer in 2 weeks tops. He's not complaining about it, it doesn't even seem to bother him. Like I said, it's about an inch in diameter, pink and the skin is flaky. I'll apply an anti fungus cream as we wait.
On the brighter side, Kuma weighs 27,65 kg (pretty much 61lbs) and is about 61 cm (24in) to the withers.
Thanks for all the great pics of your home, your pets and the beauty of Portugal!
I missed major portions of this thread while vacationing and other busyness in August, but in catching up on the whole thread noticed Rachael's plea for all to remember that MN kick's A---. I think she just wants to incite a trip for all to MN, so she can relocate and take our doggies, too! When you comin' home, girl? (Ok, I know it's a high-jack!)
Anyway, Rui, thanks again. I can't wait to plan that trip to Portugal. Maybe will bring my daughter. She's a Spanish-speaker, but I know she can carry on a conversation very well with Portugese-speakers (not sure how that works?)!
Rui, that sounds exactly like how Jack's demodectic mange started. One small patch on his shoulder where there was no fur, skin was pink (well, pinker than usual) and started to flake. He didn't try to scratch it, I don't think he even knew it was there. If it's localized demodex, it will be easy to treat. Good luck, hope Kuma gets better!
Bev - You're welcome! It's a nice country with, at least, 2 beautiful pets ;-P Spanish and Portuguese aren't that similar, if you speah one of them. For those who don't they can sound similar.
Kyla - Kuma got tested for demodex a few weeks ago because of another skin issue and it was negative. I hope it stays negative...
Dave - Never a dull moment with his skin. If it's a fungus, I'll be happy. It's the "lesser evil".
Kuma is a stubborn SOB! He decided not to eat anything yesterday, no breakfast, no dinner. Only ate about 30g of food I put in the ball so he can kick it around and a dentastix, the whole day. He woke us up at 4am, making this awful noise, wanting to throw up stomach fluids (the radioactive yellow stuff) but not succeeding much. I got up and sort of Heimlich'ed him and he got out a good 200ml of stuff. Of course he still didn't want to eat anything. We went back to sleep and we slept too. The intermission got my sleep all messed up, I'm still not functioning properly. This morning he was better and ate a bit more. Damn Akita picky eaters.
Having vented, I have to say that it was a bit scary because I wasn't sure of what he wanted to throw up, and he looked like he was in a lot of distress.
Here comes some healing energy Kuma's way for a speedy recovery!
Is Kuma on some meds? Sounds like it could be a reaction to meds. Some human meds can wreak havoc with the esophagus, stomach lining, etc. (inflammation, for example -- been there, done that!). Perhaps need to stop anything he's taking like that to see if that is the cause. Or even if he is not on a med, maybe he's licking off the cream/salve and that is causing the intestinal issues.
Thanks Bev! No, he's not on anything, it was just stomach fluid because he spent the whole day without eating. Sometimes whne he skips hi dinner, it will happen in the morning, this time he spent more time without eating.
Results came back on Kuma's bald spot. It is a fungus! Funny, never thought I could write this with an exclamation point... The vet gave me pills for it, to give him until Monday and see how he does on them, if he doesn't get vomits or any side effects. If he does he'll have to get the syrup version, if he's ok with the pills, two weeks of pills will follow, and hopefully it's the end of that.
On another note, two days back, Kuma ripped off part of the frame of the main door. Not the wooden frame that's attached to the wall, but a decorative piece of wood that forms a frame around the door itself. Now we can see the steel.
I guess I'm long due for a Kuma update. His fungus thing got infected last week, and he was on antibiotic from Tuesday to Saturday night. It's now looking much better, the skin is much thinner and starting to feel normal.
Today both Kuma and Nyx got a cooked breakfast consisting of boiled sweet potato and spinach, tuna and chicken breast. It's a bit of a strange surf and turf mix, but they liked it. Kuma liked it so much that he gave us a fright, since he threw up a bit after finishing (he had too much and a bit too fast) and then he seemed to be trying to throw up but wasn't managing. That was the scary part, since "bloat" started to float in my head. He was whining, he kept the trying to throw up thing for a while. We just stayed home and watched him like hawks, I kept trying to listen to his stomach, to see if I could get some gurgling but he wasn't having any of that. Finally I managed to hear something, and it got me more relaxed. In the end everything got well.

I'm glad Kuma is ok! Sorry you missed some sleep. \

So, spam time...
I'm glad to hear his fungus is clearing up. That sucks that he had a flair up though. Keep mending well Kuma!
